I was wondering who everyones favorite used to be?

I mean a sports star you loved that is now retired. Someone that maybe caught your imagination when you were a kid. So please........share in your past heroes and what they did for you.

The only one I can really think of is Joe Montana. I remember being a kid and watching one of the 49ers/Bengals Super Bowls and seeing Montana up there. I remember thinking that he was really good. I didn't watch football because I was so young.....but I knew who Joe Montana was and what he was capable of.

Nowadays I go back and look at videos of the Montana/Rice team. God they clicked so well it was absurd.

In the opening weekend of the 1987 baseball season I'm at an A's/Angels game. I'm eight years old and I look in the program for the A's roster. I look at the player's birthdays listed to find mine, October 1st. I find a player on the A's that has that birthday and he would become my favorite player from that day on.

His name was Mark McGwire.

Devon White. No way a superstar, but he made playing centerfield seem so effortless.

Ryne Sandberg, Charles Barkley and Dan Marino

Poor Dan. He should've won a Super Bowl. The guy was good. He had a chance.....but unfortunately it was against the 49ers.....with Montana and Rice.

But I love Marino. I just have a feeling Ricky Williams is going to end up like him. Great player saddled on a team that can almost make it....but not quite.

<buzzer sounds>

Rice wasn't drafted by the 49ers until later that spring

Well shit. That's what I get for listening to my father. *stabs dad*

However......he still had to face Montana.....

Speaking of which, there's interesting interview footage at the 49ers camp from Spring '85, where a brash young Jerry Rice makes the bold prediction that he would become the greatest receiver ever

Talk about calling your shots

You know listening to that video you'd think that Rice would become one of the cockiest players ever(see: Sanders, Deion) but he actually was pretty business like once he got going.

A bit of an odd choice, but before Mike Tyson went completely fuckin nuts, Good Lord, I thought he was God in my younger days. I still get a minor adrenaline rush anytime I see him fight. I dunno what happened because at one point, he was just a fuckin beast and now he's just a headhunter essentially, but still, always captures my imagination even when he is biting ears off.

Nolan Ryan, who is still the best pitcher of all-time in my book. I loved how he could just go out and just absoultely blow through the opposing lineup with fastballs. And the guy was tough too, as Robin Ventura found out.

Dwight Evans of the Boston Red Sox and Kent Tekulve (it's probably spelled wrong...I haven't spelled it in 20 years) of Pittsburgh were my two favorite baseball players.

Hockey......I liked Bobby Clarke,Wayne Stephenson,Mike Palmateer, Borje Salming,Dennis Polonich,Reed Larson. There's more I'm sure......but I'll stick to them for now.

Muhammed Ali. Watching some of his classic & vintage footage from the 60's gives me the chills and makes me wish I could get in a time machine and attend one of his fights.

Joe Montana......nuff said

I know he has only been retired for a year, but Darrell F'N Green. He is just about the LAST of his generation/era to go, and it is definately depressing. The man gave his heart and soul to the Washington Redskins and the city. I can't wait to see him get inducted into the HOF in his first year of eligibility......#28

Kirby Puckett. It used to be you weren't welcome to stay in Minnesota if you didn't have love for the Puck.

Funny how things change.

George Brett, Mel Ott, Magic Johnson, Earl Campell, Walter Payton.

Actually, that spelling is correct. One of my favorites too. A bit of a character.

Ali was basically the perfect athlete in my book. The man oozed personality, and backed it up in the ring. A ballsy guy with strong convictions, and in his prime, was better than anyone else who's ever stepped into a ring.
