razazteca Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 (edited) Anybody know what is the deal with this movie on MTV? Rival Schools the movie? Dubbed by MTV rappers who are smoking the wacky tobaccy after playing import PS2 games? For some reason I cannot change the channel due to the campy voice acting. NoCalMike Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 I just watched 5mins and the dubbing has got to be the lamest shit ever. I think MTV just hired a bunch of popular mtv pop artists to do the dubbing, meaning they have no experience in this of course, especially in foreign dubbing. Nice butchering job mtv.
razazteca Posted December 22, 2003 Author Report Posted December 22, 2003 So did they bring in the producers of Black Mask to make this?
Damaramu Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 I remembered back to my Anime days and how much I hated crappy dubbing that ripped the original plot of an Anime away and added no feeling.......then I saw this......realized it'd be the same thing and didn't watch.
Slayer Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Voice cast Hiphop artists overdubbing martial arts flicks = gold Fool's gold maybe, but gold nonetheless
razazteca Posted December 22, 2003 Author Report Posted December 22, 2003 This is almost as bad as the Voltron or the Aussie dub of the robotech movie "Remember Love 1984"
Ravenbomb Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Don't bother, just get the already existing DVD release with the original language track
razazteca Posted December 22, 2003 Author Report Posted December 22, 2003 Oh damn blondie gets Lil Jon as his theme music, its on now...
Slayer Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Don't bother, just get the already existing DVD release with the original language track Is it the same or different title for the Japanese version?
Vyce Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 They should have Method Man & the rest do a dubbing of Battle Royale...... ......or not.
razazteca Posted December 22, 2003 Author Report Posted December 22, 2003 I have a sudden urge to buy Storm Riders now.
Ravenbomb Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 yeah, the original is called Volcano High EDIT: Crap, it looks to be OOP. I saw it up at Sam Goody not too long ago, but both Amazon and Buy.com don't even have it listed anymore. Netflix still has it, but disc 1 is on long wait out of print

Youth N Asia Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Gotta love MTV redoing the voices and pass it off as an "MTV Original Movie." I liked the way it looked in the previews but didn't watch it. Does anyone know if it's any good...without the dumb voices.

What a shock from a network that made the god awful Kung Faux....they should be killed for that crap.
Zack Malibu Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 I meant to tape this, since I'm a fan of dubbed parodies (like MXC). I liked the other MTV Originals I've seen (2Gether was great and Jailbait (I think was the name...) was pretty good). Even though it apparently sucks, I'm sure I'll like it, since I'm wacky like that.

And maybe A Man Called Hero, just for the Statue of Liberty Fight When Storm Riders 1st came out the Tai Seng edition of the DVD was $49.95 at Suncoast which was the only store I seen it at, as good as the movie is that is just too damn much for me. Now it is at a more reasonable price of $19.95 but I don't know, I'm not a big fan of special effects martial arts movies. commentary track BAYBEE. Guest DVD Spree Posted December 23, 2003 Report Posted December 23, 2003 Commentary on movies are great features, the Ric Meyers on Drunken Master helped explain alot of questions I had. Well, I'm quite up on the Hong Kong movie scene, which I guess is my "specialist" area. Bey Logan is such a fucking legend though - having been a fan for twenty odd years before actually moving to Hong Kong and working in the movie industry there - that he can drop wisdom on Asian cinema that most other people don't know. That's why his commentaries are so awesome - plus he reads TSM, which automatically makes him the man. But having listened to his Bichunmoo commentary with Mike Leeder, he has TOTALLY opened me up to Korean cinema, which I pretty much turned my nose at before. I can honestly say that the man's commentaries are right up there with Kevin Smith's as both the most entertaining and informative available.

Now it is at a more reasonable price of $19.95 but I don't know, I'm not a big fan of special effects martial arts movies. It's certainly an aquired taste - there are times watching Storm Riders is like playing Dragon Ball. But it's just sooooo stylish, I love it. I've got the Universe (same as Tai Seng) DVD - region 0, couple of cool featurettes (in Cantonese, of course, but with no dubbing), trailers, galleries and so on. However, the Region 2 release has both the Chinese cut and the (much shorter) international cut, and is basically identical except the featurettes are subtitled, which makes a great deal of difference to non-Cantonese speakers, and worth bearing inmind if you're thinking of buying.
