Students Protest Euthanasia Research At University

Dogs' Legs Surgically Broken For Research

POSTED: 11:23 AM EST December 31, 2003

UPDATED: 11:30 AM EST December 31, 2003

GRAFTON, Mass. -- About 30 students at the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine are appealing to spare the lives of five dogs scheduled to be euthanized this week as part of a research study on how to treat broken bones in canines.

As part of research by Tufts veterinarians, the dogs' legs were broken surgically and then set to heal in different ways. The dogs are now scheduled to be killed to measure the results.

Dr. Angie Warner, the associate dean for academic affairs, defended the research, saying it will likely lead to faster and stronger recoveries for dogs.

She said it would help veterinarians better treat dogs hit by cars, "a situation that happens with unhappy frequency." Warner said the dogs are put under anesthesia and were given pain medication after their legs were broken.

One leg was treated with a tradition "fixator," an external device attached to the dog's leg with screws. The other leg was treated with another type of fixator that is more flexible and moves slightly. Researchers predict the dogs' bones will heal faster and stronger with the flexible fixator. The dogs are scheduled to be killed as soon as this week.

Students working on a different project in the same building where the dogs are housed learned of the study, which began earlier this fall.

"The more information we found out, the worse we found the research was," said Tara Turner, one of the protesting veterinary students.

A call to the school's spokeswoman was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Disgusting.

I understand having to break the legs of the dogs to test new medical methods, but why do they have to be killed? That part really doesn't make much sense to me.

They can easily go to a shelter and find injured dogs as well.

Ditto. This is just disgusting.

I meant that I understand how breaking the dogs' legs fits their experiment, which deals with testing different ways in which their legs heal. I didn't mean I agree with the general idea of breaking their legs.

So, to find ways to heal broken legs....they break legs and then set them, followed by killing the animals after breaking their legs?

Science has too much god damn free time and they should be arrested for animal cruelty. This is just sick.

Don't we have prisons full of convicted murderers and rapists that we can do this to?...

Well, if it was an experiment about fixing broken legs in general.

But the whole point of this stupidity was to take healthy dogs, break their legs so they can learn how to fix the legs of dogs who break their legs under normal situations.

Oh, then kill them so apparently they can't testify in court.

Well, considering the other option would be to rip off the legs in question for study, killing them was the "humane" way to carry out the experiements.

I don't understand why the dogs are being killed.

Doesn't conventional logic say that if you're trying to discover whether or not a new medical treatment works, it's probably in your best interest to NOT kill your test subject so you can see how it affects him?

Like, why can't they just set the dog's legs and let them heal, so that way they can not only see how fast they heal, but whether or not it would cause any long-term complications?

I really don't understand the death part.

We could find evil dogs. Like Hitler's dog. Or the one evil Lassie. The one who mauled Timmy.

Nothing like a Simpsons quote to lighten the mood.

I too do not understand why they have to be killed.

The death part is so they can look at how the legs have healed, which would either mean kill the dogs, or cut off there legs.

I generally don't have a stance on these issues because I'm all for the progression of science but I'm not sure where the limits of that would go.

No such thing as evil dogs -- only evil owners...

If the dogs in question are pitbulls, I got no problem with this.

I love dogs - they're my favorite animal - but THAT particular breed should be exterminated.

Eh, this is really nothing compared to some older animal research. I realize that a band's video isn't a credible source per se, but Skinny Puppy's Too Dark Park video has an astronomical amount of raw animal test footage, like cats in completely electrified metal cells, and nuclear tests on pigs.
