2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 Signed a 1 year/ 5 mill deal w/ Houston. He'll have to bat! No he won't Clemens will be the closer, so no he won't bat. They will pinch hit for him. He's not a starter, he's pulling a Smoltz

JangoFett4Hire 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 From ESPN.com Houston, which has never been to a World Series, will head to spring training with a projected starting rotation that includes Clemens, Pettitte, Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 I personally love this, I've been a fan of his for years. Also, no he isn't going to be a fucking closer, he's going to be in the rotation with Pettitte.

Damn, that's shocking. Last time I heard anything the guy was going to be a closer. Now he's a starter? Well, I wonder if Roger throws at people now. Maybe now the Mets will take another shot at him after missing their last chance.
LooseCannon25 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 I hope when he steps into the batters box against the Mets that whoever the met pitcher is plunks him on the head, and then when he charges the mound Piazza spears him on the way.

DerangedHermit 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 I hope when he steps into the batters box against the Mets that whoever the met pitcher is plunks him on the head, and then when he charges the mound Piazza spears him on the way. And then Mo Vaughn comes out of the stands and does a banzai drop onto Clemens. Seriously though, since they don't have Shawn "Miss Him By A Mile" Estes anymore, maybe they could actually hit him this time.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted January 12, 2004 He's not even close to what he use to be. I'd be surpried if he out pitches the 5th man in the Houston rotation next year. He hasn't been all great the last two years [ERA in the 4s, and then very close to the 4's - he won so many games because of the Yankees], and him + Juicebox = don't expect the same ol' great numbers. But, I do think he has some left, and it's a nice signing. Pen/Oswalt/Miller/Clemens/Whoever is pretty darn tootin' good.

Mik 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 So much for the whole world series DVD. Half is about the Marlins title, the other half Clemens last year. The show the standing ovation Florida and its fans gave him after he came out in Game 4 and the DVD even starts out with Clemens driving to his "final" training camp. Gotta love these things. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 12, 2004 For the most part Clemens is only going to be pitching at home, that's why he signed. He's pulling what Nolan Ryan did in his final year...pitch at hom skip all road trips unless there's a really long one where the rotation needs you and even then you take a flight in on the night prior to you starting. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 For the most part Clemens is only going to be pitching at home, that's why he signed. Where'd you hear that? Your "sources" again? There is no indication that that is actually the case. Regardless, I still don't think this gets the Astros over the top. They've still done nothing to address the holes in their line-up, or their below-average defense. Their offense was pretty inconsistent last year (i.e. score 15 runs one game and then 2 runs in each of the next three), and I don't see that changing, really. Bagwell and Biggio are a year older now, too, and Bagwell's shoulder is only getting worse. Starting pitching was a problem for the 'Stros last year, and it is definitely upgraded now, but I don't know...I just don't see this being a championship club. And the Astros are screwing themselves long-term, financially. Deferring $3.5 mil of Clemens' contract, along with all the deferred money they owe just to Kent, Bagwell, and Pettitte and their hands will be tied in 2005-06 and beyond. Makes me wonder if Drayton McLane isn't planning on selling the team soon. He's made several comments here with the Pettitte/Clemens signings that he hopes to get fans in the seats, yet nothing about actually winning a title. Sounds like a hell of a business plan to me...sign all these guys, get attendance up, and sell the team before you actually have to pay any of that money out. nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 We'll be able to prove - once and for all - that MLB is as scripted as pro wrestling next post-season when Bud Selig manipulates every at-bat to ensure that the Red Sox beat the Yankees in the ALCS (in 7 games, with Schilling getting the win in game 7) and then face the Astros in the World Series, with game 7 being Clemens-Martinez. TV ratings would go through the roof, but at the end of it all, football would still be more popular.

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 Hey AS.. how do you feel about Clemens pitching in the ASG game in 2003 since he was "gonna retire"? He'll be in the ASG in 2004 since it'll be in Houston!
LooseCannon25 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 You know what......I hope he realizes that he is probably gonna get hit a lot. We're talking about YEARS of headhunting with no retribution. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 yes, my sources...this one being turning on the TV a few days ago and listening to Tim Kurkjian on ESPN News. dumbass Dumbass? Funny...the sports radio station here in Houston, in regards to how much Clemens will pitch, just said, according to sources deep within the team, that Clemens is a full-fledged member of the team, and he will make ALL road trips (I guess the only possible exceptions being a three-game trip that he isn't scheduled to pitch on, though that hasn't been said). Don't be so quick to spout off like that. What Tim Kurkjian said a few days ago means nothing.

I think the Astros are the best team in the National League right now, and I thought that before the Clemens signing (take a look at the power rankings I did a couple weeks ago). Last season the Astros had a Pythagorean W-L record of 94-68. They've added Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens. As for finances, remember the Astros will get Hidalgo's $12 million off the books after this season. They also clear Biggio ($3 Million) next season.
