Favorite Rumble?

Recommended Posts

Of the Rumble matches themselves, not the entire PPV's, which is your favorite? Most people say 1992, but there are several other good ones.

Which do you think is the worst? I remember the 96 Rumble as being pretty awful, with a boring ending, too. Lots of people hate the 99 Rumble.

Which Rumble finish did you like the best? The double finish in 94? The HBK/Bulldog finish in 95? Flair eliminating Sid in 92? The Rock and Big Show's end to the Rumble in 2000?

Best: 92

Worst: 99

Best Finish: 96 (HBK superkicks Diesel over the top)

Worst Finish: 99 (STUPID!)

I didn't like the 96 finish because it all happened so quickly, there wasn't any time for drama. They could have had Diesel and Shawn go at it for 2-3 minutes before the ending, IMO.

I love the ending to the 95 Rumble. Sure, the one minute intervals sucked, but the ending was pretty cool, especially with it ending with the guys who started numbers 1 and 2.

'92 is great, and I really enjoy the ones from the last three years. Previous Rumbles normally had a cool start and a cool ending, but nothing of note in the middle (except for the Hogan/Warrior confrontation in 1990, and Jake clearing the ring every few years with Damien). The ones from 2000 on seem to have more little things, like Hurricane's attempted double chokeslam on Triple H and Austin, or Kaientai's kamikaze mission in 2000. I don't think I've ever seen a 'bad' Rumble, although I didn't really enjoy 1999. 1998 was a bit blah too, mainly because Austin winning was an absolute forgone conclusion, and the final four didn't do anything to change that.

This year's Royal Rumble should be awesome, mainly because it's REALLY hard to pick the winner. The net says Benoit, but there's still a few other contenders (Cena, Goldberg) who would be a logical winner too.

Best ending was '92 easily.

I hate 1992's ending. It was the best overall match, but it made no sense for # 1 face Hogan to pull Sid, another face, over and help heel Flair win. Best ending for me would be 1997, 1998, or 2001. (Them all being Austin wins is a coincidence.)

Worst is a toss-up between 1995 and 1999 for me. While 1999's crap like Austin-McMahon and Undertaker stuff is rediculous, 1995 has the dreaded 60 second intervals, not to mention a serious lack of star power.

More often than not, the Rumble is a consistantly entertaining show, the match itself is hard to screw up (exceptions being when your roster is thin, see 95-98, or your writer is on crack, see 99).

Of course 92 is a favorite, with 2003, 2000, 1990, 2001 close behind.

Like I said though, Hogan was the top # 1 babyface in the company. Young kids are supposed to look at the guy as a basically a role model. Hogan gets eliminated CLEANLY by Sid. Rather than just walk off and "fight another day", Hogan decides to basically go against that and help heel Flair win. Even Gorilla Monsoon makes a case about it on commentary. Unless it was foreshadowing a heel turn, it made no sense.

Nah, Hogan's just a baby.

The 94 Rumble, except for the Diesel segment and the notable ending, was really boring and pretty worthless.

The 98 Rumble it was obvious Austin was winning, but the end with the Rock was fairly hot. The 93 Rumble is pretty blah except for Backlund's run in the ring and of course Giant Gonzalez. ;)

I'm probably the only one in the world who loves the 96 Rumble. That's partially because I'm an HBK mark, but I was seriously feeling that Rumble. Stuff like HHH's little iron man run, Henry Godwinn slopping the heels (yeah I know, but it was 96! I was a mark), the stuff with Vader, Yoko and the Headhunters, Vader going berserk and destroying everyone after being eliminated, the interaction between Shawn and Owen and the afforementioned finish. I still love it everytime I go back and watch it. I really don't understand why it gets shit on so much.

For favorites...I'll say 96 for the markout value. Last year's Rumble was great, as was 2001. I just recently saw the 92 Rumble and it was great, but it's a little hard for me to rank it as my favorite simply because there's no real markout value for me anymore.

The worst...94 probably. That's the only Rumble I saw that didn't really sit well with me after it was over.

I love the 92 Rumble.

The 94 Rumble is the first one I've seen so it holds a place in my heart- I always enjoy watching it. How can you not like a match that sees the debut of Hardcore Holly?

1999 blows goats. 1998 at least has "Mark Henry is handling the big Johnson" to keep my interest.

2000 gets unbearably boring from Rikishi's elimination->Rock. King gets really restless at one point.

I've really enjoyed the last three Rumbles.

I must be one of the few who didn't like the 2003 Royal Rumble at all. Lesnar comes in at 29 and wins it. Taker at 30. The last four in the ring are Brock, Taker, Kane, and Batista, and before that it was A-Train. It was a fast paced start, but I really was disappointed in it in the end.

Going back to the poster who liked the 96 Rumble, it also has historical significance, with the debuts of Vader and Austin, obviously. Not too bad.

I agree that the 2003 RR kinda dies off towards the end (I watched it today) Taker giving Brock the shittiest Tombstone ever.

The stuff with Matt-Shannon is a great running gag and I love all the stuff they squeezed int to keep it entertaining.

Plus you have Tommy Dreamer killing Y2J.

My favorite . . . the 1989 Rumble Match

- Ax gets #1. Smash gets #2. Who's next . . .

- The 8th Wonder of the World . . . then which superheavyweight gets to join in?

- Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig? Seemed totally random that they stuck the little guy with the perfect record in there with the Tag Champs and a legend.

- Then, we have Jake Roberts clear the ring with one snake.

- The Rockers enter and are magic.

- As are the Brain Busters.

- Macho Man lights the place on fire.

- As does Hogan.

- The Warlord is in the ring for about 1 second.

- The Mega Powers . . . almost . . . Explode . . . with some woman in the front row SCREAMING for Savage to hit Hogan. How can ya ignore that?

- The Twin Towers cut a deal with the $1,000,000 Man to get back-to-back numbers and ELIMINATE Hulk Hogan?!? Can't say I, or anyone else would have seen that one coming. Of course, Hogan takes the Bossman with him as the whole Rumble becomes a tossup.

- DiBiase enters at #30 and the field is fairly open.

- DiBiase, Studd, and Akeem are the favorites, although it really doesn't seem to matter who wins . . .which adds to the unpredictablity.

- Maybe they were going to go with Rick Martel since he just came back from a major injury.

- The Red Rooster just turned face a week prior.

- Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake could have been a logical winner . . . Hell, Duggan won it the year before.

- After the smoke settles, Studd dumps Akeem, DiBiase, and even Virgil to win the Royal Rumble and the crowd leaves pleased.

Good stuff by my scorecard.

Any reason in particular that Studd was picked to win it?

I really liked 1999, even though everyone else in the universe hates it with burning passion.

I thought it was very entertaining, even though no attention was paid on anyone other than Austin or McMahon. My favorite part was Austin chasing McMahon and getting the shit stomped out of him by the Corporation.

From what I've read, if it's to be believed, Studd was in line for a push in early '89, but injuries and disease (the one that eventually killed him) started to set in by then

2001 is most likely my favorite. Great stuff the whole time, changing it up with the types of people in there so they could work well with each other. They even worked in a mini-hardcore match.

And I haven't seen a Rumble I really disliked. They're all fun for their own reasons.

I felt embarrased in 1999 because I was watching it with my father who hated wrestling, and everyone in the rumble was either really stupid or just......ugh. I couldn't enjoy it at all, and still don.t

Royal Rumble 2002 Line of the Night: (As Austin is walking out) "Stone Cold came to win the Rumble, but it was not to be on this night... thanks to MR. PERFECT and Kurt Angle." - JR

If you press mute on your TV right after Mr. Perfect, though, it sounds like Curt did it all by himself.

For as much as I didn't care for the 2002 Rumble, Mr. Perfect totally saved it for me. Man, he looked like the cocky bastard we all knew and loved when he came down the aisle. Like old times again.

And IMO, the best usage of a celebrity ever was at the 2001 Rumble with Drew Carey. Fun stuff and an awesome rumble indeed.

I don't like 99 or 03

99 was ruined by Austin and Vince leaving the ring every minute and running around the arena.

I didn't like 03 cause Brock was going to win for sure. Which would have been ok, but he didn't come in till #29, and by then the match is just about over. He should have showed up midway and dominated.
