Ripper 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 The fact that you claim that I don't listen to Sinatra is quite amazing. If you read back towards the beginning of the thread, you can read about my love for the Rat Pack. I'm not going to repeat myself for your benefit, but I'll just leave it at this: odds are, I listen to more Sinatra than you. See, I find that hard to believe because you are actually saying this guy is a throwback to them. No...he isn't. He has a smoothish voice and is doing a bad impression of them. the long notes, sound fine. Its just how he gets there. He isn't in the same league with the Deans or Sinatras or Tony Bennett's of the world. Hell, I don't even like Harry Conick Jr. and I will listen to him 1000 times before I would pick this kids album up. At least Harry understands the style, he just has a sucky voice. Ripper - listening to crooners since nineteen eighty-fooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu*reaches out hand to imaginary camera with cheesy look on face*uuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrr. justsoyouknow 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 I'm not too fond of Dean Martin, but Sinatra's near the top of my list of all-time favorites. Although, I can't stand his more popular songs, like "Under My Skin" or "Fly Me to the Moon", I'm more of a fan of his more low-key stuff, like "I'll Never Smile Again" and "I'm a Fool to Want You". "I'm a Fool to Want You" features some heartbreaking vocals on Frank's part. The thing about Stevens that I liked is that he actually attempts to be different. Fantasia, Hudson, London, they all just seem to be like every other mainstream R&B singer out there. True, he doesn't have the voice to sing pop music, but when he's on, he's on. I haven't seen him be excellent since the beginning of the competition though, when he busted out "The Way You Look Tonight" during his audition. That's what caught my eye....or my ear...either one. When he actually does his Dean Martin impression or his Frank Sinatra impression, he can do a good job...he actually sounded like Dean Martin (the whole "drunk" thing...check out Rat Pack Live! and you can hear Martin mix up the words to "I Left My Heart in San Francisco...he says "Fran Sansisco", then when someone yells at him, he says, "You shut your god-damned mouth")...while Stevens doesn't carry the same stage presence as the Rat Pack, at least he's attempting to be different. The thing that bothers me is that now they're trying to make him look like everyone else in the show, with the fancy shirts and the spiky "bed-head" look to his hair. I say let him stick with the suit and the slicked back look he was rocking towards the beginning. The issue I have with the show in general is that they're forcing him as hard as they can to change. Let him keep the look, let him keep the style, and he's fine. But when the judges tell him to change his style, he changes it, and they want the old Stevens back. He changes back, and they want him to change again. It's a lose/lose situation for him here. But, I digress. I actually enjoyed Jeniffer Hudson, I thought she gave the best performance this week, and shouldn't have been voted off. Fantasia can still suck my ass, though. EDIT: And I wasn't even alive in nineteen eighty foooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 God damn. Every TV show I see is just bitching and bitching about the fact that she went home. This is stupid because they say "Well we're going to let American choose!" and then American chooses and they say "NO wait! We said you can choose. Choose who we want to win!" NYU 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Diana's performance blew me away. In fact, it pissed me off that the judges didn't give her more compliments. Ask Paula about George or Fantasia, and you can't get her to shut up from blabbering. But Diana puts out an awesome performance tonight, and suddenly, Paula is short on words. Fuck that. The judges already have their biased opinions of who should be the Last 2 finalists, and that was really exposed with the final performance tonight. Ranking of performances: 1. Diana 2. LaToya 3. Fantasia 4. Jasmine 5. George 6. John Bottom Three tomorrow night: Jasmine George LaToya I'm going to give the people the benefit of the doubt and predict they're smart enough to vote out George (or John). MooreMark 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Diana/Jasmine will be in the bottom 3 tommorrow. George might. John might. Fantasia and Latoya are save I think. Rankings: 1.) Diana 2.) Latoya 3.) Jasmine 4.) Fantasia 5.) George 6.) John

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 NY...why the hell do you want George to go so badly? Because you have something personal against him? That's what it sounds like. He's one of the best singers in the competition and should make it to the top 3 if not win it all. Plus American loves him....so that's why he hangs around. Secondly.....they are really.......REALLY gearing this competition to favor the girls. The bias is not getting way out of hand.
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 He's one of the best singers in the competition and should make it to the top 3 if not win it all. I haven't heard him from tonight, since I most likely won't watch, but he's been terrible the past two weeks. He's nowhere near as good as LaToya, Jasmine, Fantasia, or even Diana. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 He's one of the best singers in the competition and should make it to the top 3 if not win it all. I haven't heard him from tonight, since I most likely won't watch, but he's been terrible the past two weeks. He's nowhere near as good as LaToya, Jasmine, Fantasia, or even Diana. Oh yes he is. And I don't think he's been terrible at all. I think the judges are threatened that he may win the competition so they're doing there absolute best to make sure he doesn't and try to influence the vote. Yes he hasn't done his best but he's damn good and has showed it in the past. Now they're picking things that play to the power singers and such. Which is wrong b/c I can tell who they want to win and it's just sickening watching them put Latoya and Fantasia over. That's probably why Jennifer got voted out b/c of backlash from America realizing what they're doing. Well hell.....get rid of Latoya and Fantasia to so that they realize they can't pull this shit.
NYU 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 I have nothing personal against George. I just think he's terrible. 1) In the past three weeks, the caliber of his singing has gone down TREMENDOUSLY. He's struggling to hit notes, he's constantly in the wrong key, he's flailing about on the stage as if he's having a seizure. His performances have just been awful. Yes, worse than John Peter Lewis on the week he was booted. And MUCH worse than Jennifer Hudson last week. We're getting to the point where he has no business being in the competition any longer. 2) In my opinion, many aspects of his character are an act, or at least played up huge for the cameras. To be quite honest, the guy honestly looks like he's mentally retarded. You look at this face and you can tell there is absolutely nothing going on his brain. Plus, he can't help but make the absolute dumbest facial expressions when someone's talking to him. Simon's trying to critique his performance tonight, and there's George with widened eyes.....goofy smile.....comments under his breath.....enough already, There may be quite a problem if a 16-year-old is absolutely schooling you on showing some kind of poise on stage. He's one of the best singers in the competition and should make it to the top 3 if not win it all. Plus American loves him....so that's why he hangs around. At this point, he's one of the bottom two in the competition, only above John Stevens. And America loves him? I certainly don't. What you say is happening with Fantasia and LaToya is EXACTLY the same thing that's happening with George. The judges are trying to shove him down our throats. Every week, no matter how terrible his performance is, Paula or Simon make sure to mention that George's happiness is "infectious" and "that America is in love with him." It's almost as if they're attempting to convince the public that we should vote for George, regardless of his perfomances.....like they seem to be doing with Fantasia and LaToya. I understand that you like George, and that his roots in Oklahoma may have something to do with it. But don't kid yourself by saying that he's the best singer in the competition or that's a conspiracy to hold him down. He's been getting wide judge support since he came as a replacement, and his performances in the past few weeks have been downright horrible. If he's not gone this week, he should certainly be finished by next week.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Well, after watching this, I'm wondering if Katie "Bouncy" Webber and Scooter Girl SHOULDN'T have been here. Gloria Estefan's music killed these kids. Anyways, thoughts: - Diana, of all people, was the best singer. It wasn't even close tonight - John threw up a big fat turd, but then again, there was no way that he could do well with this genre. My pick to go. - Gloria Estefan set a new standard for a guest judge being completely and utterly useless. And this was with her songs being butchered right in front of her. - Fantasia. Energy, yes, but sang hella-bad. And being sassy still annoys me a lot. - LaToya was... adequate. - Jasmine. Well, she looked pretty good. Singing was a bit flat, but not too bad. - George wasn't as bad as John, but really, that ain't saying much. Bottom 3: - Fantasia, John and George. John finally gets the boot, and everyone (including John) breathes a sigh of relief. The kid's only 16, so he's got lots of time to improve.

Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Okay, saw everyone... - Shockingly enough, Diana WAS the best for what has to be the first time EVER. This was her night, as she was the only one who really adapted to the style. Bravo to her. - Jasmine and LaToya were both decent. Not good, not bad. Just decent. - Fantasia... Ugh. Ripper, not even you can defend her this time around. Solid performance, but the singing was fucking awful, the worst she's ever been. - John... Double ugh. You knew this was going to be a wreck, and what a wreck it was. This may be his final week, and now I'm wishing he was gone two weeks ago so he at LEAST would have gone out on a good performance. - George... Blech. I love how Paula was practically forcing herself to compliment him so she just started rambling, saying stuff like "And you're so infectious... and you're smiling... and you're trying... and yeah, it was nice." He absolutely should not be here, neither should John really. I can't believe Amy Adams and Jennifer Hudson are gone and George and John are still around. Bad night. Bad, bad night, that Diana on her lonesome couldn't save. Especially since Gloria Estefan is no Quentin Tarantino or hell, even Barry Mannilow.
Vanhalen 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Interesting piece in todays paper Sir Elton John has branded the public vote for TV musical talent show American Idol "incredibly racist". The UK star's comments follow the shock exit of black vocalist Jennifer Hudson, who was one of the favourites to win. "The three people I was really impressed with, and they just happened to be black, young female singers. "And they all seem to be landing in the bottom three," said Sir Elton at a news conference on Tuesday. Programme makers Fox Television declined to comment. Sir Elton, who was a guest judge on the show earlier this month, said Jennifer Hudson, La Toya London and Fantasia Barrino all had " great voices". Talented "The fact that they're constantly in the bottom three - and I don't want to set myself up here - but I find it incredibly racist." The show eliminates the contestant who gets the fewest votes each week. The Jennifer Hudson result prompted the show's host Ryan Seacrest to remind viewers that the series was a talent show, not a popularity contest. Jennifer Hudson had been one of the favourites "America, don't forget you have to vote for the talent. You cannot let talent like this slip through the cracks," he said at the end of last week's show.
Cran Da Maniac 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2004 Interesting article I found 'Idol' Canceled If This Singer Wins? Some music industry insiders are quietly debating the future of the runaway hit show "American Idol" if lounge-style singer John Stevens wins the current competition. According to USA Today, he doesn't have "the pipes or the personality of the others," but he's so popular with the voting audience that he actually has a chance of winning--even though he's the three judges' least favorite contender. And that has a number of music critics forecasting the cancellation of the show. Stevens is a marginal talent at best, writes USA Today reporter Edna Gundersen. But the voters love him! Middle-aged women in the heartland want to take him home and feed him. Young teen girls are falling in love. George Varga, pop critic for the San Diego Union-Tribune and Copley News Service, told USA Today that a win by the 16-year-old Stevens "should provide the best chance yet for "American Idol's much-deserved cancellation. If not, I'd suggest a joint tour with William Hung and have Janet Jackson's right nipple as the opening act, although the nipple is probably the superior singer." Ouch. Laugh all you want but the first two runs of "American Idol" produced big-selling CDs from Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, and Clay Aiken. But music consultant Dennis O'Donnell told USA Today all that would end if Stevens actually wins this time. "With this kid, what can you do?" he says. "He's not an engaging personality...You have no one-hit-wonder capability in this equation." For good measure, O'Donnell added this: "I don't believe there's a record in John Stevens. And I don't think anyone who's voted for him could sit and listen to 12 cuts of John Stevens."
