Students disciplined for posting 100+ flyers

Recommended Posts

Source.

I'm sure I know why the students did this, and the fact they got disciplined is total B.S., unless the article is leaving out some major component, like the flyers also showing burning crosses or being arranged on walls in the shape of the "N" word.

Otherwise, rock on...

Posters Rile Nebraska School Leaders, Students

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."

Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools district, said administrators at Westside High School discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday - Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.

Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.

The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.

The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs-up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.

Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.

"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."

"It was a very innocent thing," she said.

Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.

Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.

According to 2002-2003 state statistics, 56 Of Westside's 1,632 students are black.

Well it's obvious the kid was a Nazi. The only white people in S. Africa are former Nazi's and their kids.

That "thumbs up"? Just "Seig Heil~!" for a new generation.

Duh.

I'm guessing an Egyptian student who wanted this award would have been punished as well.

I think we need a new PC name for black people.

Whatever happened to "black?"

If you want to call people "African-American," then I think you need to recognize that there are white folks in Africa, too. Otherwise, you need a new term.

exactly...black people from an island nation like Jamaica or Haiti HATE being referred to as African-americans...because they aren't from Afirca.

Did you know actress Charilze Theron is African-American? she was born in south Africa, and is now an American citizen...hence forth, an African-American. but she's white, and therefore, not considered an African-American...see the problem?

i got a good PC name for black people: Blacks...simple, direct, honest, BOOM says it all.

Maybe White African, It doesn't matter to me being refered as a African American or Black American, white people get all scared asking me which one do I perfer . Some Africans don't like to be perferred as being "Black" because some Africans look down upon us black americans and hate the fact that we use the term African American because Africans don't look at us as such.

Bingo. Who decided we should divide the human race into "sub-races"?

Then what do African African-Africans on the other side of the pond refer to American African-Americans as?

Please note I'm trembling on the inside asking you this...

As black. Africans don't consider American Blacks of African descent as true Africans.

A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.

This I got a problem with.

It seems like a legitimate, valid claim this kid has.

There's a simple way to resolve all of this without resorting to punishment or screaming: Change the award's wording from African-American to Black American. Although I doubt the school would be quick to acknowledge the award is REALLY based soley on skin color and not on culture. Even though we all know its a black award and not a cultural award. Big difference
