MrRant Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 LOS ANGELES - Pixar Animation Studios Inc. said Thursday it had broken off talks with Walt Disney Co. to extend their lucrative movie distribution deal that has resulted in such blockbusters as “Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc.” and “Finding Nemo.” The computer animation pioneer said it said it would look for another studio partner and would begin talks with other companies to distribute its films starting in 2006. The move was a blow to Disney, which reaped a financial and critical bonanza from the partnership and has struggled with its own strategy for animation. Their deal includes two more films in production. “After 10 months of trying to strike a deal with Disney, we’re moving on,” said Pixar Chief Executive Steve Jobs. “We’ve had a great run together — one of the most successful in Hollywood history — and it’s a shame that Disney won’t be participating in Pixar’s future successes.” Copyright 2004 Reuters Limited. Guest El Satanico Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 That has to hurt...badly. Can't say I'm disappointed, as I doubt Disney had much to do with the creative side of Pixar.
Nevermortal Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Does this mean we'll never see Toy Story 3 because Disney owns the trademarks?
Guest El Satanico Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 Does this mean we'll never see Toy Story 3 because Disney owns the trademarks? No you can expect a lame DTV Toy Story 3 in traditional animation or 2nd rate computer animation.
Downhome Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 This is great news, Pixar deserves much better than Disney. Check out this old thread that I stared a while ago talking about how great a day it would be when Pixar leaves Disney.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Good, without Pixar Disney is basically screwed for drawing people in to any movies now.
Mole Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I never have understood the hate for Disney. Disney is the one company who tries to stay family friendly, which is needed out there. There will be a BIG bidding war for Pixar. I wouldn't be suprised if Time Warner picked them up, just to add to their empire.
EricMM Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Remember all the "Pixar is the only thing Disney has going for it?" HA!
Damaramu Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Yeah I'm not understanding to much of the Disney hate either.....
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Yeah I'm not understanding to much of the Disney hate either..... The fact that Disney hasn't put out a quality movie/tv show in years?
Downhome Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 To to mention not treating Pixar as they deserve to be treated, and their apparent need to release sequels to all of the classics...for no reason at all other than to make a few extra bucks, against the wishes of Walt Disney I do believe.
Mole Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 The fact that Disney hasn't put out a quality movie/tv show in years? Pirates. I know this has nothing to do with quality movie's, but their movies did make the most money this year. To to mention not treating Pixar as they deserve to be treated, and their apparent need to release sequels to all of the classics...for no reason at all other than to make a few extra bucks, against the wishes of Walt Disney I do believe. Aww, you gotta hate a company for finding ways to make money.
MrRant Posted January 30, 2004 Author Report Posted January 30, 2004 It's more of that their animation department is what has been having problems.
godthedog Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Yeah I'm not understanding to much of the Disney hate either..... from the other disney thread... between this, eviscerating their animation department, and refusing to pay 'peter pan' royalties to a children's hospital, this company just gets dumber and dumber.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 For a "family" company, Disney is one of the most cutthroat companies around...
Guest JMA Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Disney died when Walt did. Ditto. It's a shame, too.
Highland Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 When was the last big animated summer movie from Disney? Was it Tarzan? That's the last one I liked anyway.
The Metal Maniac Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Pirates. I know this has nothing to do with quality movie's, but their movies did make the most money this year. You must mean combined, right? Cuz RotK made more cash then Pirates did, if IMDB speaks the truth.
Jobber of the Week Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Disney still does SOME good things. Pirates Of The Carribean was quite good. This has interesting ramifications for Roy Disney's attempt to turn things around at the company (again.) He was pretty tight with John Lassiter (the other head honcho at Pixar besides Steve Jobs) and could use his ability to negotiate a new deal as a trump card to get shareholders and/or the Board of Directors to give Michael Eisner the boot.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Your hatred towards Disney is misdirected. It should all go to Michael Eisnar, he's the one at fault. Don't hate on Walt's dream.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Pirates. I know this has nothing to do with quality movie's, but their movies did make the most money this year. You must mean combined, right? Cuz RotK made more cash then Pirates did, if IMDB speaks the truth. He should've said last year, not this year. When 2003 ended Pirates and Nemo each had more than ROTK. ROTK was only around for 6 days in 2003. Don't hate on Walt's dream. Walt's dream is dead...Eisner's nightmare LIIIIIVESSSS
notJames Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Steve Jobs > Michael Eisner Now I can watch a Pixar presentation without the stigma of having it associated to the Other Evil Empire.
godthedog Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Disney died when Walt did. poppycock. from '89 to '93 disney was probably the most consistently good studio in the states. if you only count their animation dept.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I have to admit as a child I really did enjoy The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King...then they shoved out stinky pile of shit after stinky pile of shit including DTV sequels. Only good animated film by Disney(not counting Pixar's stuff of course) after TLK was The Emperor's New Groove and that's because David Spade, John Goodman, and the guy who played Putty on Seinfeld did superb voice acting jobs.

When 2003 ended Pirates and Nemo each had more than ROTK. ROTK was only around for 6 days in 2003. Disney made the most money in 2003. RoTK's money gross will be more than Nemo because it was released in 2003, so it counts in the 2003 money gross. Disney had: Finding Nemo: $340 Pirates of the Caribbean: $305 Bringing Down the House(Touchstone which is apart of Disney): $133 Freaky Friday: $109 That is $887 and that is only counting their top 4 movies.

syxx2001 Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 People hate things that are successful. I have nothing about to say about Disney.

Try every DTV sequel of any Disney animated movie ever made I'm waiting for Song of the South II: Br'er Rabbit's Magic Journey
Red Baron Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Didn't Pixar stock shot up because of this failure of negotation between them and Disney?
