Guest Deebo Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Anyone else surprised at how immensly over Eddie Guerrero has become? I know it's been going on for a while, but it seems to have really hit a peak now. I mean everyone in the arena was chanting "Eddie" while you had guys like John Cena and Kurt Angle in there. I'm truely surprised at this, but I'm also glad. I just never expected him to get this over with the "Lie, Cheat, Steal" gimmick.

Guest Deebo Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I don't remember exactly, but before Chavo originally got hurt I believe he started getting very over. Then while Chavo was gone his popularity really went through the roof even though they weren't doing a whole lot with him. When Chavo came back I think he lost some of the popularity, but it came back and now it's at it's peak I believe.
Guest JMA Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I think Eddie's gimmick is very innovative. Sure, there have been other anti-heroes and heelish faces, but here is a face who constantly brags about being a liar and cheater. I especially loved it when they were trying to push him as a heel and he STILL got them. Hell, they did it during his first promo as a heel.
Scroby 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 It really took off the match Tajiri and Eddie lost the tag titles, when he was just messing around and giving the crowd the cheating they wanted, but in a funny sense.

Yeah, the whole 'smoke and mirrors' routine was classic. The stuff against TWGTT especially.

Austin3164life 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Eddie's popularity began to sharply rise around spring-summer time 2003, I'd say. That's when the whole "Cheat 2 Win" gimmick was becoming huge. He peaked for a while up until after he faced Big Show at No Mercy, when Chavo returned I believe. Now, his popularity has risen to those levels again. If they go with Angle/Eddie at WM XX, I see Angle turning heel very soon.
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Plus Eddie goes out and entertains in basically every match or segment he's in. If you push someone who can't work, you are basically hoping their charisma can get them past the lack of good matches. (like Goldberg) With Eddie, you can send him out to fight Big Show and have a reasonablly good chance of a good match. niko
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I just checked the WWE's calendar, hoping that after No Way Out Smackdown would have a show in Texas. Unfortunately not. Remember the last Smackdown where Eddie went home and they let him open the show? The crowd went fucking nuts for him. If he were to go home, and have the WWE title with him, the place would explode and I would probably never watch another wrestling show again because nothing would top that for me. Guest Ghettoman Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Eddie got over before he was a face in his ladder matches with Edge and RVD. He needs to be pushed as the sneaky yet confident underdog who can really frustrate an opponent, and he needs to be put in lengthy matches where if the crowds not behind him he can get them behind him. If they do that, Eddie will be over for a while.

Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 With the ratings not where they use to be the casual fan is pretty much gone, and I think the ones left are starting to give more credit to wrestling over characters...I just think he's finally getting to where he needs to be because the fans are finally starting to notice how great he is

Eddie needs the mullet back. When Eddie cut his hair, no one really liked him. Eddie with out of control hair seems to equal Eddie over with the crowd. It's the hair man! MixxMaster 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 Indeed he is over...but I think we can all agree that his horrible haircut may just kill his popularity if he doesn't fix it....fast. The haircut is indeed bad, what still surprises me is that while the changes to the gimmick are innovative, the racial stereotyping is so BAD, that it's amazing that latinos aren't insulted. I mean, the broken spanglish and mannerisms are just plain racist. Notice how Chavo doesn't do that. And I'm pretty sure we all know that Eddie doesn't really talk and act like that... cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 The whole Latino Heat schtick is a lot of why Eddie is as over as he is. I think it also helps that most of the SMDN face side isn't as over as people think, hence Eddie started getting cheered as a heel. Notice that on Raw when he feuded with RVD he started the whole "essa, holmes" thing and didn't really get much face reaction (which was correct since he was a heel). Know why? RVD's actually over. I think the beginning of the Eddie love was after he moved to SMDN and feuded with Edge. I think most people could tell he was doing most of the work in that feud, and a key match took place in L.A. with a big Mexican audience. I think that feud made Eddie look better than Edge, since most of the crowd started backing Eddie in it. Made me wonder if Edge was as over as people thought. There are other events, such as his deranged thrashing of Tajiri for besmirching his lowrider and subsequent hilarious non heel turn promo. But it's quite simple why he's over: he's the most consistently entertaining guy on SMDN. Week in and week out, you can always count on Eddie to have a good match and some crazed mic work. The gimmick started around during the Radicalz. when he was trying to woo Chyna. I thought it was funny then (even before the face turn) and still do now. There's just something about the guy trying to be a sleazy scumball that's incredibly entertaining.

Edge was over and brought just as much in that feud as Eddy did(not to take anything away from Eddy, obviously). As for the blowoff match, both guys went through hell in that match and it didn't surprise me at all that the crowd started chanting for him after it was over and seeing as Edge got a pretty big pop for winning(I should know, I just watched the match yesterday), I'd say he was over. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 I wouldn't say that Eddie truly started his current gimmick until his return in 2002 against RVD. I mean yeah he was Latino Heat during the Radicals when he was wooing Chyna, but that was a different gimmick to some extent. It wasn't the "Lie, Cheat, and Steal" version of Latino Heat. I think somehow they need to combine these gimmicks. Have Eddie as a lying, cheating, and stealing ladies man. Millions I say, millions! As far as Edge goes, he was over I guess during both the Angle and Eddie feuds but I think even marks realized that Angle and Eddie were doing most of the stuff in those matches that made them above average. Edge is the closest thing to a blank slate there is in wrestling, it totally depends on who he is wrestling. If he's wrestling an average opponent, it'll be a ho hum average match. A bad opponent? Bad match. But against an Eddie or Angle (great opponents)...great match. This isn't to knock Edge, but he's basically the epitome of a bland, blond haired Canadian wrestler. AlwaysPissedOff 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 (edited) Meh, the Angle matches were average, at best, even the Backlash match. And, both guys(Eddy and Angle) have had bad opponents and produced bad matches, so I don't see how that's a knock on Edge. And to be honest, I think Angle's the most overrated "good" wrestler I've ever seen. Edited January 31, 2004 by AlwaysPissedOff
