More kids killing each other

Recommended Posts

MIAMI — A 14-year-old boy was apparently stabbed to death in a school bathroom Tuesday, and another student was taken into custody.

Other teenagers discovered Jaime Rodrigo Gough in a boys' restroom at Southwood Middle School (search) at about 8:30 a.m.

Miami-Dade Police Director Carlos Alvarez said that the boy had suffered "some sort of cutting incident," and that the weapon was found. He would not elaborate.

As of late afternoon, the student in custody had not been charged.

Other children at the school were locked in their classrooms with their teachers as a precaution for most of the day before they were sent home in the afternoon. More than 150 worried parents gathered outside.

Antonio Gough, Jaime's uncle, said his nephew was a good student who played baseball, the violin and the flute, and was not a troublemaker.

"The kids have to know what happened to him," Gough said. "I still can't believe this can happen."

Gough said family members were told by school officials that Jaime had been stabbed.

Mike Antonell, whose 12-year-old son is a sixth-grader at the school, said he felt heart palpitations when he heard the news.

Southwood opened in 1976 as the county's first magnet school (search), specializing in visual and performing arts for students in grades six, seven and eight. It has more than 1,500 students.

Update:

PALMETTO BAY, Fla.  — A 14-year-old boy was charged with murder in the slaying of a classmate, a musician and baseball player who was found bleeding to death in a middle school bathroom.

The two boys "knew each other very well," said Chief Pete Cuccaro of the Miami-Dade Schools (search) Police Department. He refused to elaborate on their relationship.

Jaime Rodrigo Gough, 14, was found early Tuesday at Southwood Middle School (search), a magnet school specializing in visual and performing arts, authorities said. His neck had been slashed.

Michael Hernandez, 14, signed a statement admitting he killed the boy and the knife used in the attack was found in his backpack, Miami-Dade County police Detective Randy Rossman said Wednesday. Police had obtained a search warrant for the backpack.

The slaying was the second inside a school this week. A 17-year-old boy was shot in a Washington, D.C., high school hallway Monday.

In the Florida slaying, Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder late Tuesday, police said. A court appearance was set for Wednesday afternoon.

"We have sufficient information ... to charge him with first-degree murder, which would indicate premeditation," said Miami-Dade police spokesman Juan DelCastillo.

Juveniles charged with first-degree murder in Florida are charged as adults.

Miami-Dade Police Director Carlos Alvarez said authorities found the murder weapon.

The school did not have a history of violence, Miami-Dade School spokesman Mayco Villafana said.

Antonio Gough, who identified himself as the victim's uncle, said school officials told the family that Jaime had been stabbed. Gough said his nephew was a good student who played baseball, the violin and flute and was not a troublemaker.

"The kids have to know what happened to him," Gough said. "I still can't believe this can happen."

Southwood pupils returned to the school Wednesday morning, and grief counselors were made available.

Larishea Bivens, an eighth grader who said she had known Jaime for five years, said he was a shy boy who was often targeted by bullies.

"He was nice, smart, but they used to pick on him a lot," said Bivens, 14.

More than 1,500 students attend Southwood. Palmetto Bay is one of Miami-Dade County's wealthiest cities.

In the Washington case, Thomas J. Boykin, 18, surrendered to police Tuesday in the shooting of James Richardson, a Ballou High School student who died after being shot several times in the chest. Boykin was scheduled to be arraigned later Wednesday.

So middle schoolers are now cutting each other's throats in the bathroom? WTF?

That's why my old high school had metal detectors in the main entrance(they were built into the door frames). Then the alterior exits/entrances weren't opened until halfway through the first period(the teachers who had classrooms closest to the exits were given keys as well in case of fire before they were unlocked)

We also had a security guard at the entrance and a big 350lb black man that lumbered around and served as a security guard of some sorts. He's was fast for a heavy man.

I am Andrew's complete lack of surprise.

Actually I figure some will happen real soon around here the way things are going. But yeah, schools need to figure out what to do. I seriously doubt there was no rumors about any of this happening, maybe the teachers need to listen in and warn others (that's what happens at my school since we've had ten or so fights). This generation, what's left, is gonna fuck up this world.

You know, I used to hate my high school. Little bitty podunk town, only 300 students, several drunk redneck cowboys...but now, it doesn't seem so bad. We had our share of idiots, sure, but no one ever got attacked in this way, much less killed.

I hope this kid gets locked away for a very, very long time. Normally, I'd say give him the chair, but he is only 14.

He probably didn't understand the whole thing about death and killing. He needs some help. Will he get only 3 years, like Lionel Tate? I hope not.

O shut up about tate. What he did is different then fucking stabbing someone to death. You stab someone, they bleed and by the time you are 5 you know fucking bleeding is something people don't do for shits and giggles

Uhh, lomas...Sandman9000 would bleed for shits and giggles...

Anyways, this all reminds me of "Come Out And Play." Yes, the song by The Offspring. Welcome to my generation, eh? Kids stabbing and shooting each other in school, being told that the best way to solve something is with words but they can't say what they REALLY feel because that wouldn't be PC, and the kids that just don't care are considered idiots and put on drugs.

What? Oh, my point? These kids be fucked, yo.

So, I'm guessing this is somehow Bush's, Cheney's, or Haliburton's (heck, maybe all 3) fault.

....Sorry, been reading the AOL political boards. Now that is a gene pool with a touch too much algae.

It's a shame. I hope the kid gets hurt. Badly.

and stabbing someone to death in a fucking school bathroom is ok. Thats fucking premeditated murder in my opinion. The kid brought a fucking weapon to school and decided to kill someone. How is that not worse .what i am saying is that some "children" apparently don't know right from wrong and in the case of tate are just so fucked up that they don't know that they are hurting someone when they are performing wrestling moves on a little girl. What Tate did was fucked up and shouldn't have happened, and while kids do moves on each other all the time , he should have known when to stop. But honestly what Tate did could have been seen as SOMEWHAT of an accident. You don't just fucking stab someone to death and not know what the fuck you are trying to do. So the assholes who were calling for the "monster" Lionel Tate to spend the rest of his life in prison from the age of 14 better have the same feelings for this kid who stabbed a classmate to death. I mean whether we want to admit or not these people are still children. I mean yes at 14 most people know that if someone is screaming in pain you fucking stop doing moves on them, but i would think that more people at age 12 know that when you stab someone they have a good chance of dying. To say that a child deserves life in prison while grown men who murder in ways just as bad if not worse and don't do life terms is stupid.

I wouldn't trust fifteen year olds either. But anyway I personally think the stabbing is just as bad because at the age of fourteen you should know, maybe not completely understand how bad it is, but grasp that you don't f'ing stab people. Especially to death. Comparing this with Tate I'd say this is worse just because he brought the weapon, repeatedly did it... plus pounding the shit out of someone isn't as obvious way you think of death as stabbing is.

Don't get me wrong both are hideous. I figure somebody will get Tate and this kid here better get a long sentence filled with ass rapings and beat downs. *Hums "End of the World as We Know It.*
