Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2004 This semester, I'm taking a Field Placement/Observation class in college, which is more or less a work study program where you go into your selected field for training and a feeling out process of what you're going to be doing once you have that college degree. I'm an Education/Special Education major, so I got placed at a school (by my choice) near my house that has a mixed group of typical kids, as well as those with special needs. I was supposed to start 2 weeks ago on Wed., but a snowstorm here caused the school to be cancelled. So I started this past Wednesday, and I have to say I absolutely loved it. I'm in the primary classroom, helping kids ages 6-10 who have special needs (there are six kids in all), and then kids from the kindergarten room next door come over to play with them for the latter half of the day (there were three typical kids from the kindergarten that came over, I don't believe the special needs kids in the Kindergarten come into the room, but again, I've only been there one day). So I got there on Wednesday and pretty much dove right in. There's a teacher and an assistant in the room, plus me, so it's not like I was ever alone or put in a spot where I didn't know what to do. The kids took to me immediately (luckily for me), and I even took one of them for a walk around the building when I was given a tour of the whole school. I helped the teacher film at lunch time, as they record the progress of the special needs kids while they're eating, their motor skills, etc. I oversaw morning group with them, played with Lego's, and just generally tried to interact as much as I could so the kids weren't shy/afraid of the new adult in the room. Being that it's work/study, I assumed that I'd be going nonstop all day, but I was told that I'm to act like a worker, which meant a 15 minute break in the morning and a half an hour for lunch in the afternoon. Rather than just waste the time, I used it to walk around and meet the rest of the staff, and apparently I've turned a few heads since I was asked by some of the older women if I was single so that I can get hooked up with some of the younger teachers (yes, my first day on the job, and I was being hit on). I blended in pretty well with the staff, to the point where they commended me on the job I had done on Wednesday, and they all said that I should work there as soon as I can (I believe you need an associates, which is what I'm going for now, to be a full time worker there, but I'm going to find out), and that they'd gladly put in the good word for me. All this on just my first day, and it really overwhelmed me. I still have the whole rest of the semester to look forward too, plus there are other Field classes that have to be taken in sequence (you must pass Field 1 to move on to Field 2, etc., but it can be done all at one place, so I'm staying put in this school). Looks like my teaching career is going to get off to a rocking start, and I figured I'd just share my excitement about it with you guys here on the board. Guest stardust Report post Posted February 6, 2004 So you're gonna teach elementary school, Zack? That's pretty cool, considering there are next to no male elementary school teachers.
Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2004 So you're gonna teach elementary school, Zack? That's pretty cool, considering there are next to no male elementary school teachers. I'll probably stick with the special needs kids, at least for now, but once I get my Bachelors, I might look into elementary schools.

I wasn't sure if you were working with elementary aged special needs kids or what. Hell, it's cool to see a guy teaching special needs kids--I don't think I've ever seen that. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 7, 2004 Zack, given that career option, I can safely say this. You sir, have FAR more patience than I do. I gave a little consideration to teaching once, and did a little subbing on the high school and jr. high levels, and I couldn't even stand that. I'd have to be a haughty professor who doesn't care if his pupils fail due to their own actions. The high school chem class I taught wasn't so bad, just due to the material, I think, but all that attention that the handicapped kids require..phew. Good luck, bud.
