First image from Mortal Kombat Deception!

Recommended Posts

The deal he made was to avenge his own death. He didn't know about his family until before MK4. In MK1 he thinks his family is still alive, but part of his curse is that he can't see them.

Neither Scorpion or the original Sub-Zero are good guys or bad guys. Sub killed Scorpion, but it was on a job. They're assassins, it's what they do. But then again, who can blame Scorpion for wanting revenge on getting killed?

In the later games the new Sub-Zero is a good guy. Scorpion would be neutral. He doesn't care what happens to Earth either way. He is chasing Chi now, but only out of revenge, not because Chi is evil.

Well that makes sense.

What about Johnny Cage though? He was murdered in MKII, no? I realise that Raiden brought him back into the Earth Realm to aid in the fight against Outworld, but wouldn't he then be like a Scorpion-ish character (a spectre)? Just seems a tad weird that he would be killed and then he'd return and start making movies again (unless of course his death was not reported to the people of Earth).

Kintaro was responsible for his death, right?

Cage died inbetween MK II and MK3. When Kahn took over the Earth right before MK3 one of Kahn's extermination squads killed him. We don't know exactly who did it. The squads were Centuars like Motaro though, so it wasn't Kintaro. If it was anyone in particular it was probably Motaro, but who knows? It could have been a group of them.

At first he was allowed back because his soul couldn't go to Heaven during Kahn's invasion. When Kahn was defeated his soul went to heaven and he died agian. Then before MK4 Raiden brought him back permantly to help fight Shinnok.

Cage no selling dying and making movies like nothing happened is something I've wondered myself. It's pretty silly. I think it's just because Midway wanted to use him as a goofy comic relief character(like how the movie has him) instead of focusing on a serious story about him dying. I suppose the explination could be that nobody on Earth knew about it so he just returned like he had been missing or something. In MKDA they make fun of the whole thing with his movie "Mortal Kombat: The Death of Johnny Cage".

The difference between Scorpion and Cage's deaths is that Scorpion made a deal with demons. He is a spectre. Like a ghost or whatever. Cage just got his soul put back in his body and is as good as new.

Yeah, that stuff was funny. I like his DA ending, with the poster for MKDA: The Movie.

So MKDA is much more than just a fighting game I gather. It's got a great story and other things to do?

Oh and I'm reading all these reviews bashing on MK Trilogy. It's not that bad is it? I'm getting the PSX version.

Oh and MK4. Is it going to be a good buy?

MKDA has this mode called Konquest that is like a tutorial or training mode. It teaches you all the moves and chain combos for each character. The cool thing is that inbetween the lessons(and often part of the lessons) is vast amounts of story. MKDA has the most detailed and in depth story in the series. It also covers a bunch of stuff in the past games that we didn't know about before. Things like Sheeva killing Motaro are from MKDA.

As far as MKT goes...what do you think about MK3? A lot of people that bash MKT also hate MK3. If you don't like MK3 I doubt you'd like MKT. If the idea of MK3's gameplay and story plus tons of old school levels and characters sounds appealing then you'll probably like it.

MKT is my favorite game in the series and the one I play the most BY FAR. The PSX and Saturn versions are the best versions of the game.

I don't know what you'll think of MK4. A lot of people hate it, even more so than MK3. I don't like it as much as the first 3, but I think it's pretty cool. The problems are that most of the new characters are lame, the weapons are not implemented very well and it was very rushed(especially the arcade version). On the plus side it basically plays like MK3 and has some really cool Fatalities. seeing The Prison stage fatal & Quan Chi's leg rip fatal is worth the price alone.

Well I remember originally saying I liked MKII and hated MK3.

Well since I've been playing them I really enjoy MK3. I think it was just that in the olden days that was the only one I owned therefore I played it constantly and got burnt out.

A lot of people hate the MK3 characters and setting since it's more modern and Earth based than the cheesy kung fu and mystical settings in MK and MK II. Also some hate the dial-a-combos and running.

The only gripe I had with the series was the fucking block button. Arguably the dumbest addition to any fighting game, it used to infuriate me that I'd hit back (out of instinct from playing so much Street Fighter) only to be slaughtered.

However, now that Mortal Kombat has ventured into 3D, the button works perfectly in that environment.

Trilogy and DA are the SHIT in terms of content, Dama, and are worth every cent (espicially now that both would be unbelievably cheap these days).

Yeah, I always see MKT on PSX for 9.99 new.

Some of the new stuff is lame and poorly done...but the game is still MK3 with nearly 40 characters and almost every stage from MK, MK II and MK3. I play it like twice as much as any other game in the series just because it's so huge and complete.

That's because they seemed to be thrown in for each other's benefit, and if you hate a Block button, a run button is ten times more retarded.

Is THIS so hard, guys?!

Well I've been practicing my fatalities on 2-player mode. Nothing is more frustrating than when you enter in the correct button combination and it still doesn't work.

Also.....how do you do mercy again?

Maybe your problem is distance? You have to be the correct distance or the Fatality won't work, no matter if you do the correct motion.

What? Running and dial-a-combos? Yeah, they are in to quicken the pace...and it worked. It's what makes MK3's gameplay superior to MK II.

Is holding a run button hard for YOU? The run button should be a minor thing. What's the big deal?

Running, dial-a-combos and the modern, almost futuristic setting of MK3 make it the best. The robots are cool!

So who was the bad guy.........Sub Zero or Scorpion? I could never tell.

Neither one of them were angels. They were both assassins for hire after all.

But the original Sub-Zero was especially cold (no pun intended). Instead of incapacitating Scorpion on their first meeting or even killing him painlessly he casually ripped his spine out. Plus Raiden told him his soul was tainted with evil and he was able to enter the Netherrealm.

Scorpion was originally a sympathetic character, but he's easily duped and doesn't care about anything but revenge. He ended up working for Shao Kahn and Quan Chi in 3 and 4 but was good in Deadly Alliance.

The younger Sub-Zero is merciful and fights along with the good guys, and reformed the Lin Kuei as a force of good. He's the most boring of the 3 in my opinion.

So to put it in wrestling terms:

older Sub-Zero- heel

Scorpion- tweener

younger Sub-Zero - face

In MK1 it's clear Scorpion is the face and Sub-Zero is the heel. Sub-Zero is put over as being cowardly and Scorpion is really sympathetic.

But with later games like MKM I would say old Sub is a tweener. He decapitated Scorpion, but they were rivals. When Raiden told him he was evil he seemed taken back and upset. He got the Amulet back, that has to be worth some major hero points.

In MKM Sub comes off as someone who is capable of both good and bad and realizes he is heading towards the dark path.

The Sub-Zero of today is not the Sub-Zero that was in MK1, correct? He certainly could pass himself off as the same guy, considering he looks to have aged a fair bit in Mortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance.

Not that I'm complaining, Subbers looks more amazing in MKDA than in any other MK game.

Yeah, the Sub in the modern games(that's unmasked with a scar) is the original's younger brother. The original Sub has only been in MK1, MKM and maybe UMK3/MKT as a hidden character. The main Sub-Zero since MK II is the younger brother.

He looks so old in DA because of his new Dragon Medallion. Since he is now Grandmaster he gets it and it makes him much stronger. The aged look is it's power taking a toll on his body.

The original Sub-Zero was thought to be dead, however returned in MKT, UMK3 etc., but for what reason exactly?

Sometimes, when guys get killed, they should, you know, STAY DEAD.

i.e. Johnny Cage.

Also, after recieving chills down my spine watching Liu Kang having his neck snapped, I'd be quite happy for that to be his final moment in Earth realm.

Thanks for putting up with the onslaught of questions too, Sakura.

We don't know why the original Sub was back in UMK3/MKT. I don't even think it was actually him. It says when he removes his mask everyone is shocked to discover who he is, which implies it was someone else. Who knows what the deal is with that. He hasn't been seen since, so it's probably just a dropped storyline, much like what WWE does all the time.

I agree people should stay dead. Dying in MK is meaningless since so many people have come back to life. I'd say it's the biggest flaw with the storyline. There is no drama or tension when people die. It's especially silly how death means nothing in MK when the big point of the game is fighting to the death.

You're welcome. I could answer questions or talk about MK all day.

Some more info on the game that is Mortal Kombat: Deception:

You begin your quest as a 13 year-old apprentice warrior whose appearance you can choose to customise before you set off seeking your fighting fortune. You'll roam through six different realms, learning three different fighting styles of your choosing. Depending on which masters you visit on your travels, you can mix and match your styles - meaning if you want two weapon-based styles and one 'open palm', you can do that.

Best of all, once you feel your character has what it takes to crack digital heads, you can take them online and say "Fight me!" to anyone else with a PS2, Network Adaptor... and the game, naturally. As Midway pointed out to us, the more you roam in Konquest mode, the more likely you'll be turning heads with your exotic fighting styles and super special moves.

For those of you who couldn't get enough of those extra goodies packed into Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and strived to open every Koffin available - well, there's good and bad news. The good: plenty of secret stuff to find in Deception. The bad: it's going to be spread all the way through those six, huge realms... Look out for more Mortal Kombat: Deception details soon, here on PlayStation.com.

Eh.......it's like a comic book or action TV show. Nobody stays dead. I've gotten used to death being meaningless after EVERYBODY that was supposed to have died over the years in Spider-Man, X-Men, etc. came back for more. It takes the sting off of death. Hell even Godzilla can't stay dead. Hell the Undertaker apparently can't stay dead! :)

Anyways.......what about Liu Kang having his neck snapped? Who all is in MKDA. And who is brand new and not from MK 1-4?

Liu Kang's death happens in the intro to MKDA. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi double team him.

MKDA roster:

1. Scorpion

2. Sub-Zero

3. Sonya

4. Kano

5. Raiden

6. Johnny Cage

7. Shang Tsung

8. Reptile

9. Jax

10. Kitana

11. Kung Lao

12. Cyrax

13. Quan Chi

14. Drahmin

15. Hsu Hao

16. Frost

17. Nitara

18. Kenshi

19. Mavado

20. Bo' Rai Cho

21. Li Mei

22. Blaze

23. Mokap

24. Moloch(unplayable sub-boss)

14-24 are the new characters who debuted in MKDA.

Blaze is a special case though. You know how on The Pit II in MK II there's a guy on fire in the background? That's him....

Fun fact - The actor that played Nightwolf & the cyber ninjas is Sal Divita, semi-famous co-creator of the NBA JAM series.

No Liu Kang anymore!? I thought he was the hero though.......who's the hero now?

Also if you don't mind me asking......could you do that for the cast of MK4 as well? I only played that once several years ago.

Oh and isn't Cyrax a human in the new ones?

Yeah, Liu is dead. No one is really the main hero anymore. Well I guess you could say Kung Lao is since he was Liu's friend and fellow monk.

MK4 roster:

1. Liu Kang

2. Johnny Cage

3. Jax

4. Scorpion

5. Sub-Zero

6. Raiden

7. Sonya

8. Reptile

9. Fujin

10. Kai

11. Jarek

12. Tanya

13. Quan Chi

14. Reiko

15. Shinnok

9-15 are the new characters.

Also Goro is subboss and is playable with a code. Noob is a hidden playable character too.

MK Gold, the upgrade to MK4, adds Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, Kung Lao, Cyrax and Sektor to the roster.

Cyrax got his soul back and has free will but he's still a robot. Sometimes he fights without his mask, but he's still got the yellow armor and bombs and all that. He works for Jax and Sonya's Special Forces now, as a good guy.
