Basically, I was going through the "TSM Biggest Metalhead" thread, doing really badly, when I noticed some bands (Quiet Riot, Ratt) who never meant jackshit in the UK and one (Riot) who I'd never even heard of. This got me wondering, do metal bands from the UK, past and present, mean anything, or are even heard of in the states. For the sake of curiosity, are the following acts heard of in the States and to what extent?

PAST

Carcass

Dub War

Extreme Noise Terror

Medulla Nocte

PRESENT

Akercocke

Cathedral

Funeral For A Friend

Lostprophets

Napalm Death

Paradise Lost

Raging Speedhorn

Stampin' Ground

Thanks guys

In my defence, they're probably the biggest UK metal act at the moment, in terms of popularity over here, so I just wanted to know how they've translated to the USA. Besides their new stuff is pretty good, especially We Are Godzilla, You Are Tokyo

I dunno about any UK acts. My friend told me about some bands, I think they're called Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest, but I can't be too sure. You know how friends can get these wacky underground metal acts' names messed up!

(Oh, you forgot "Cradle Of Filth" for present UK metal bands, since they're one of the more popular black metal acts in the world...and none of this "they're not TR00" bullshit, either. You also forgot Venom in your "Past" list.)

I have been dying to get my hands on some Akercocke

You don't think before you speak, do you Tack? I swear, you are the GAYEST metalhead in the known...._1469871_judas.jpg image_01.jpg...ok, maybe not, but you're still hella gay.

Yeah, but I KNOW how those acts are received in the US. I know that Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead and Cradle are all popular in the States from reading the posts in this board and from reading the metal press in the UK (seven years of subscription to Metal Hammer). It's not that the bands I listed are the only UK metal bands I've heard of (I DO listen to, and know a lot about, metal music), but the ones whose popularity, if any, in the States I was curious about.

Carcass is amazing. I am a Mike Amott mark, though. Cathedral is entertaining, and I know many people here stateside who like Paradise Lost and Napalm Death.

And I don't understand why people like Cradle at all.

Shit, sorry Corey, just re-read the opening post and I haven't phrased it well at all. I meant to ask if UK metal acts from recent times have been popular in the US- the past/present thing was meant to show bands who still exist and those who have split.

Nice to see the mighty Akercocke are vaguely known, shame no-one seems to know of Medulla Nocte, they were so damn heavy (musically and physically- the drummer was a fat, fat bastard) that it would have been nice to see them get more acclaim.

Bands with fat drummers are usually good....

Nick Barker (Dimmu/Cradle)

Gene Hoglan (Death/SYL)

Vinnie Paul (Pantera)

I'm seeing Akercocke when the suport Arch Enemy in their prosponed gig in March.

I'd throw Axis of Perdition as a UK Metal band (Industrial Black Metal) that I hope carries on with good things. Just because they're so good.

Damn, also forgot to mention the excellence that is Sikth. I heard they were touring a bit in the States, so hopefully some of you will get to hear them. They're kind of like a more listenable version of the Dillenger Escape Plan.

I love Strato. It's my guilty pleasure.

DCMaximo, I'm going to look into Sikth. I really like DEP.

Sikth plummeted with their album. The EPs there good, then they got blah.

As for being a more listening DEP. DEP outdo Sikth everytime.

Hey, I never said they were as good as DEP, just a more listenable version. I'd say that those lovable scamps in Busted were a more listenable version of Green Day, but I'd sooner listen to Green Day.

Actually, more listenable isn't the phrase....ah yes, CRAPPER version of Green Day would be more accurate, but you get my point. I still dig Sikth though, partly because the video for How May I Help You was so great, so Steviekick, I'd still say they're worth looking for.

Insulting a man's wardrobe is trendy. I fancy myself an Autumn.
