Hollywood Reporter is reporting that japenese actor Ken Watanabe is cast as Ra's Al-Ghul

Ken Watanabe, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Last Samurai, has been will be squaring off against Christian Bale in the upcoming new Batman movie, directed by Christopher Nolan. The Warner Bros. project is scheduled to start production next month in London.

 

Watanabe will play the villainous Ra's Al Ghul, an immortal strategic mastermind who wants to bring his own brand of order to the world.

 

He joins Bale, cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Michael Caine as Wayne's trusted butler Alfred; Katie Holmes as a childhood friend of Wayne's; Liam Neeson as Wayne's mentor Henri Ducard; and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, a former board member and sidelined employee of Wayne Enterprises.

 

Watanabe made his English-language debut with Warner Bros.' "Samurai," though he has been acting since the early 1980s in Japan, where he is a household name, known for playing heroic samurai roles.

 

 

reading that cast list... this is like, the greatest cast for a superhero movie EVER. It's that damn good!

 

Only a complete moron could screw up the marketing of this film (um, Jon Peters ins't involved in any of that, is he????). A trailer for a realistic gritty BATMAN movie, with the names MORGAN FREEMAN, LIAM NEESON and Katie Holmes flashing across the screen... who could resist?

This movie the way it's shaping up should appeal to almost everyone.

 

Batman fans, people who know of Batman, action fans, people who care about acting, "omg he's so hot" fans, people who pick movies based on hype...everybody.

 

 

This casting caught everyone off guard. He's mentioned for the first time and offcially cast within a week.

An Asian Ghul? Eh......they're just damn lucky he's a good actor.

 

This is an amazing cast for a superhero movie, though. As long as the studio doesn't screw them up, this should be a fanboy's dream.

I didn't think that Scarecrow was in this movie.

OK, I'm confused... We already have a thread in here that links to an article that says Neeson is playing Ra's Al Ghul. Now, this says it will be Ken Watanabe. But we're also saying Neeson is still in the movie. Huh?

Neeson as Ra's Al Ghul was a mistake by Variety. He's playing Henry Ducard.

 

Cillian Murphy will be Jonathon Crane aka Scarecrow, but i don't believe he becomes Scarecrow in this film.

 

Talia will not be in this film.

Watanabe was amazing in TLS. Great casting move. Of all the actors mentioned for the role, Watanabe is the person I think that most resembles the look of Ra's Al Ghul. He may not be Arab, but I really don't think he looks any less Arab than any of the other possible candidates for Ra's.

Ken Watanabe as Ra's Al Ghul seems like an excellent casting selection. Not only does he has a good look for Al Ghul, he has the acting chops to pull the character off properly.

 

Being the pessimist I am, I'm still holding Batman Forever expectations for this movie. However, I still hope for it to beat my expectations exponentially seeing how they're casting talent rather than names.
