Cheex Incarnate 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2004 Best Picture: Mystic River Everyone thinks LOTR will win, but i'm just not sold. The Academy ALWAYS picks movies with good acting (Sean Penn over Viggo Mortenson) and NEVER picks fantasy movies. So, this makes the most sense. Best Director: Peter Jackson Think of it more an award for all three movies, rather than ROTK. If it were really the "Best director" award, it would go to Peter Weir Best Screenplay (Original): Lost in Translation, Sopphia Coppola Bar none.....well, maybe 21 Grams Best Actor: Bill Murray He will win to be this year's Frances McDormand. Although, if i may, Ben Kingsley is without a doubt the best actor of this year (and i've seen all the nominees). Johnny Depp being nominated over Paul Giamatti and Russel Crowe is a joke (how he won the SAG award i'll never know). Best Actress: Keisha Castle-Hughes WAY WAY WAY better than Charlize Theron. Ebert should clean off his jizzed pants and pay better attention. Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins Not as good as Benicio in 21 Grams, but he's more of the favorite and his performance was good enough to warrant the award. Supporting Actress: Renee Zelweiger Patricia Clarkson should win, but whatever
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2004 I'll just begin with what I'd like to see win. I'll post what I think will win later. Best Picture Lost in Translation: I adored this film, it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Best Director Sofia Coppola, Lost in Translation: Well, it's kind of obvious judging from above who I think should get this and why. Though I understand giving it to Jackson. Best Actor Bill Murray, Lost in Translation: Far and away the best of them. Penn did nothing for me (in fact, at times I felt he overacted a tad and brought the film down). Murray never felt to me like he was acting, and I mean that in the best possible way. Best Actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider: It would be awesome if she wins. Of course it will never happen, but it would be great. Best Supporting Actor Tim Robbins, Mystic River: I'll give it to him, though I actually thought Bacon was the best in the film. Best Supporting Actress Renee Zellewegger, Cold Mountain: I don't really care for anyone in this category. Where is Scarlett Johansson? Best Original Screenplay Sofia Coppola, Lost in Translation: See all the other Lost In Translation love from above. Best Adapted Screenplay Braulio Mantovani, City of God: Why this is nominated for four awards yet not Best Foreign Film utterly confounds me. Best Animated Feature Finding Nemo: Well, duh. Best Foreign-Language Film The Barbarian Invasions (Canada): But really, City Of God wins this category.

The Barbarian Invasions has a screenplay nom so it is the easy pick for best foreign film. Copolla will get something in exchange for LOTR taking best picture, the question is how much. Mystic River will win the consolation screenplay award, but realistically, it will be a long night for Mystic River fans. Most of its thunder was stolen by Lost in Translation in recent weeks. Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 29, 2004 I thought Saving Private Ryan was the favorite that year... SOTL was against JFK, Bugsy and prince of tides and Beauty and the Beast... I don't see how that could be an upset since Beast was a Cartoon, JFK had historical inaccuracies and I never saw Bugsy... Interesting because Every year it seems to me the wrong movie wins... Chicago won over LOTR and Pianist. A Beautiful Mind over LOTR and Gosford Park I'll agree with Gladiator American Beauty over Cider House and Insider Shakespere over Ryan Titanic over L.A Confidential and GWH English Patient over Fargo and Maguire I agree with Braveheart Gump over Shawshank and Pulp Schindler's List i'll agree Unforgiven I agree SOTL, I agree Dances over Goodfellas Miss Daisy over Dreams, Dead Poets, forth of july (I haven't seen My Left Foot, which Im sure was better) rain man, I'll agree

pochorenella 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Not by the time of the awards ceremony. Pretty much everyone was picking Shakespeare in Love, after Miramax basically bought the award That was a complete outrage. Private Ryan should have won, no doubt. One of the best movies ever, IMO. Now that the Oscars are over, who could've thought about a LOTR Oscar sweep? They won in EVERY CATEGORY they were nominated for. I expected Best Picture and Director, but not every fricking category! Insane Bump Machine 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 That was a complete outrage. Private Ryan should have won, no doubt. One of the best movies ever, IMO. Hell no. The first half hour is good, but the rest is mediocre. Shakespeare in Love was a much better film and deserved to win. Ryan isn't even one of the best war movies ever. Films like Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, All Quiet On The Western Front or Paths of Glory are in a different league.

pochorenella 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Shakespeare in Love wasn't even as good as Elisabeth. The Truman Show should have won, but it wasn't even nominated. Have to agrre somewhat regarding The Truman Show. Truly a one of a kind movie with superb performances by Jim Carrey and Ed Harris. It was really criminal the way the Academy ignored this film. But it wasn't nominated, so on that front I believe Private Ryan should have won. Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are really classic films that no doubt will stand the test of time, but for my money Private Ryan had it all. I'll never get tired of watching it. Shakespeare in Love was a nice little movie but not Best Picture Oscar, IMO. I enjoyed it, though, but haven't seen it again.
MDH257 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 (edited) I know this is six days late, but I like facing up to my predictions. Best Picture Lord of the Rings: Return of the King It's time 1 for 1 Best Director Peter Jackson He deserves Best Director more than the movie deseves Best Picture. Though if I got a vote, mine would go to Fernando Meirelles. 2 for 2 Best Actor Sean Penn I really want Bill Murray to win this one. Penn and Depp will someday get another shot. This is likely Bill Murray's only chance. 3 for 3 Best Actress Charlize Theron Charlize winning is the biggest no brainer of the night. it was. 4 for 4 Best Supporting Actor Tim Robbins 5 for 5 Best Supporting Actress Shohreh Aghdashloo My head tells me to pick Renee Zellweger, but I think she's lost momentum and the voters have turned against the performence. Talked myself out of that one. 5 for 6 Best Original Screenplay Lost in Translation 6 for 7 Best Adapted Screenplay Mystic River Never thougt LOTR would win this one. 6 for 8 So I got 75% on the Big 8 catagories Best Cinematography Seabiscuit Wrong, 6 for 9 Best Editing Master and Commander Now I thought RTOK was great, but it winning Best Editing is a joke. 6 for 10 Best Animated Feature Finding Nemo 7 for 11 Best Foreign Film The Barbarian Invasions 8 for 12 Best Documentary Capturing the Friedmans Didn't think they'd give it to Errol Morris. 8 for 13 Best Live Action Short Two Soldiers I guessed right, thank you Entertainment Weekly. 9 for 14 Best Documentary Short Ferry Tales I guessed wrong, f%*k you Entertainment Weekly. 9 for 15 Best Animated Short Destino If this wins, Roy Disney is getting the trophy. Will he lash out at Eisner from the Oscar Stage? It lost so we'll never know. 9 for 16. Best Art Direction LOTR: Return of the King 10 for 17 Best Costume Design The Last Samurai Wrong. 10 for 18 Best Original Score LOTR: Return of the King 11 for 19 Best Original Song Into the West from LOTR: ROTK A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow from A Mighty Wind (I hope Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara perform the song in Character) They did. 12 for 20 Best Visual Effects LOTR: Return of the King 13 for 21 Best MakeUp LOTR: Return of the King 14 for 22 Best Sound LOTR; Return of the King 15 for 23 Best Sound Editing Master and Commander 16 for 24 I finished with 66%. Foolish me, I picked ROTK 8 times instead of all 11. BTW I'm glad Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan. I hated the ending of Private Ryan. Spoiler Warning At the end when Tom Hanks tells Private Ryan to "earn this" and then we cut back to the present day with Ryan and his family. I think Spielberg wants us to believe that Ryan did earn it, which I don't agree with at all. It almost ruined the whole movie for me. I can't get the quote and spoiler tags to work for some reason.
