Guest Y2DAYDAY Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 According to PWinsider.com, which got this info from the WWE corporate site, the early word for the No Way Out PPV is that it did 250,000 buys. Scherer compared it to the past 2 years Feb shows but that is not a fair comparision since those were dual brand shows. According to Meltzer, the October No Mercy PPV did about 250,000 buys as well but the Armaggedon PPV did only about 220,000 buys. So the fact that No Way Out, a Smackdown only show that was basically a one match show and the show that came between the 2 biggest PPV's of 2004, Rumble and Mania, did 250,000 buys, that would be considered a mild success. Buys usually trickle in as well. Many thought this show would do worse than Armaggedon and it beat it by 30,000 buys. They have to be happy with this number because going in, this show should have been a 150,000 buy disaster. But it wasn't. Eddie, Brock, and to a lesser extent, Goldberg, saved this show.
Guest Choken One Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 and let's not forget that most estemates have been UNDER the final rate...So it could very well be 275,000-300,000
BUTT Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Are estimates really usually below the final buyrate? I believe the initial estimate for WM X8 was around 1.1 million buys, but it ended up doing far below it. (I may be confusing that with something else, though.)
Enigma Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Yes, it can be that far below. Before December 2003, WWE's corporate website listed Royal Rumble 2002 at 470,000 buys. The updated figures they got that month raised the buy rate all the way up to 625,000. So, yes, it can usually be largely below.
Kahran Ramsus Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 But hey that Eddy guy doesn't draw. Hey lets push Shawn again with his great track record of pulling in the crowds.
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Are estimates really usually below the final buyrate? I believe the initial estimate for WM X8 was around 1.1 million buys, but it ended up doing far below it. (I may be confusing that with something else, though.) Estimates for WWE Buys is the same as estimates for fixing a car. USually the total estimate is several hundred dollars less, and maybe more considering the damage.
SamoaRowe Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I still don't see how that buyrate should be considered good news. It out performed Armageddon and tied with No Mercy, which was the second lowest ordered PPV or something?
Guest Burning Hammer Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 It is good news for a few reasons. 1. It shows that Eddy and Brock are bigger draws than HHH or Goldberg who main evented the December Raw only ppv with Kane and drew about 30,000 less buys which translates into about $1 million less in revenue than the initial estimates for No Way Out. Plus the Cow Palace was sold out so the live draw was there as well. 2. Eddie will continued to be booked strong for the company at least until the May Smackdown! only ppv which should give them a good indication of where his drawing power is at after they receive the buyrate on that (I'm assuming Eddy will be part of the main event in some sort of rematch with Angle or rematch with Brock) Live attendance for Smackdown! is something that needs to be watched but if that goes up Eddie is well on his way to giving the WWE its first real drawing card since Rock was still working for them on a regular basis.
Jobber of the Week Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Eddy and Brock are bigger draws than HHH or Goldberg Hold on while I sit here and savor the moment of Eddy drawing more than HHH and Fuck Goldberg. Wait a minute, here it is... Aaaaaaaawww yeah Okay. Done. Carry away.
SamoaRowe Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 This is all the more reason why Angle vs Guerrero should be the last match on Mania.
ChrisMWaters Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Off Topic: The 7-Up Spot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sunglasses Smiley. Now... Good for No Way Out out-drawing a Raw PPV, especially with Eddie/Lesnar main. Course, HHH will probably say it was a bad time of year.
Hektik Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 What is even better about this is that the buyrate is reflective of the Eddy/Brock match. That is the one match that most people paid to see. The majority of the card was barely good enough for Velocity but Eddy and Lesnar saved the show. No Way Out was a show that did not have any supposed "Mega Stars." There was no Undertaker or McMahons on the show like other Smackdown PPVs. Armageddon did have supposed "Mega Stars" like HHH, Goldberg, and Shawn Michaels and NWO still beat it. This is good because now even casual wrestling fans are showing signs that they are ready to see new faces at the top. In early February I said that NWO had to beat Armageddon and I am very pleased that it did.
Guest Brian Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 And it wasn't just that the show was built around that match, that match was the show. It was basically promoted as a one match show.
SuperJerk Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 Since Goldberg was at No Way Out, shouldn't he get part of the credit for the number of buys?
AndrewTS Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 Since Goldberg was at No Way Out, shouldn't he get part of the credit for the number of buys? No.
King Cucaracha Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 Since Goldberg was at No Way Out, shouldn't he get part of the credit for the number of buys? No. Did you not watch Heat? It was near enough billed as... 'Goldberg will be at ringside, while Brock Lesnar defends his WWE Title...against Eddie Guerrero...GOLDBERG WILL BE AT RINGSIDE!' He'll get some credit I'd hasten to bet.
Hektik Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 He shouldn't get credit because he was not even in a match. Add to the fact that Armageddon got 30,000 less buys than NWO, for a show that had Goldberg, HHH, and Michaels in actual matches.
tommytomlin Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 The nWo weren't in a match at 2002's No Way Out, and they got credited for the small boost it got. A Goldberg/Lesnar confrontation was just as much a selling point of No Way Out as Eddie's title shot, you can't dismiss either.

A Goldberg/Lesnar confrontation was just as much a selling point of No Way Out as Eddie's title shot, you can't dismiss either. The nWo also hadn't debuted in WWE at that point, and hadn't subsequently becoming a freakin' joke yet. Goldberg had already been in WWE a good while, and hasn't been much of a draw except in high-profile matches. There's a difference between people having no idea what the nWo might do, and Goldberg sitting at ringside possibly to interfere. I don't think that alone sold anybody on the show. The nWo also provided a "small" boost, you admitted. The nWo coming back was a much, much bigger deal than some guy who has been in the company for nearly a year sitting beside the ring.
Lil' Bitch Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 I can't imagine average Joe just stting at home going... "OMG Goldberg is going to sit at ringside to possibly cost Brock Lesnar the title, I gotta see that happen and willing to pay $35 just for it!!!"

Just because you kids need something to bitch and moan about, doesnt always make it so. Brock-Eddy sold the ppv, Billberg and Rey-Chavo were the added attractions.
AndrewTS Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 I can't imagine average Joe just stting at home going... WWE Originals sold well, after all.
MrRant Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 I thought Originals only sold 20,000 copies. And probably to children.
