Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Report post Posted March 2, 2004 Is supporting multiple teams an American thing? Over here in England you support one and only one team (and very passionately). We can't fathom following two teams in the same sport. And the team you follow (if a true supporter most say) is the team closest to the hospital that you were born (Southampton all the way for me). You don;t 'choose' who to support. In addition, to support a team because they are good or whatever is seen as very shallow and fickle - you become a "fan" and not a true "supporter". So its Southampton Football Club for me. In terms of American sports my choosing of teams is pretty fickle - I just based it on the first American city I visited or the home team of the first sport type I saw live in person. With that in mind: NFL: 49ers MLB Anaheim Angels NHL Anaheim Mighty Ducks NBA Phoenix Suns
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2004 I think that fans who aren't quite as passionate support more than one team. I see it that if any other team wins, my favorite didn't, so fuck all the rest. Just supporting good teams isn't satisfying for me at all either. You have to be there for the bad times to really enjoy the good ones. Being a Philly fan means you don't really know what it's like to enjoy the good times, but when they come, it'll be something else.

I live in Michigan, so I am obviously a Wings, Tigers, and Pistons fan. I was born in Cincy, so the Reds have always been my favortie National League team. The Senators, I just like because well hell I live 15 minutes from the Windsor/Detroit border and I visit Canada alot, I was taught one thing and thats to hate the Maple Leafs, and Ottawa is their rival now more so than Detroit since the stupid move to the East, so i just kinda root for the Sens by default and I also love how they went from sucking major ass to being the future powerhouse of the NHL along with Tampa Bay. We can't fathom following two teams in the same sport. And the team you follow (if a true supporter most say) is the team closest to the hospital that you were born (Southampton all the way for me). You don;t 'choose' who to support. I'll try to do justice to your questions ... No, supporting multiple teams is not an American thing really, but due to the size of the States it's easier to care about two teams in the same league (because there's a good chance that the 2 teams will never face each other.) For example, in the NHL, I live and die by the Bruins (had season tickets, travel to away games, watch every game on TV, etc) but like to see the Canucks and Oilers do well. Barring a matchup in the Stanley Cup, the Bruins will play each of those teams only once a year (sometimes twice, but never more than that.) and when they do play, the Bruins are the team that I'd root for So, the Bruins are the team that I truly support, and the others are teams that I like. It'd be comparable to rooting for two football (soccer) teams that play in different divisions; you know they'll never play so it's not an issue to like them both. And I have no issue with people 'choosing' to support a certain team, even if it's not the one closest to their birthplace. I have friends from Chicago that hate the Blackhawks because they hate the owner, and have chosen to root for other teams. And when I was younger I rooted against the local teams because of the fact that my parents, who introduced me to a love of sports, weren't local to Boston and thus rooted for other teams ... so, I rooted for the teams that they rooted for. Now that I'm older, I tend to root local.

The Devils are evil because they play the most boring hockey in the league. The Flyers are evil because of Clarke, Brashear, and Primeau. Both deserve to hate each other, and both deserve to be hated by the rest of us.

I grew up in Massachusetts, and was a Bruins fan. I took a liking to the Senators because I thought Alexandre Daigle was the next big thing....boy were we wrong. Anyway, I liked the Senators in spite of them being horrible because the B's would usually school them pretty well, so it was like a 'yes, Ottawa's coming to town'. As they started developing more talent, I became more of a fan. I've been a Daniel Alfredsson fan since 1995, when he broke into the league. Since I grew up in Mass, the Red Sox were, and no matter how much they break my heart or piss me off at times, will always be my favorite team. But, I wanted the Phillies to win the 1993 World Series, and they had my favorite player on their team then (Curt Schilling).
