So everytime a person calls a show and says the 'n word'...that show should be banned?

No, "banning" a show for an occasional slip-up would be ridiculous. But increasingly stiff fines should be the rule of the law and, if a particular show keeps "crossing the line," well, then a banning probably wouldn't be out of the question.

I cant believe a couple of you really think that children listen to Howard....

It isn't just Howard Stern, man. There are other shock jocks, you know? Stern's just the most prolific figure being tossed around right now because he won't shut his mouth about it.

But yes, I would say that there's a pretty good chance that there are at least a few kids listening to him somewhere.

(BTW: I've never listened to one of Stern's shows; he's never been in the Houston market as far as I know. I've seen his TV show a time or two, but it really didn't interest me, so I can't speak on how "fit" he is for kids to listen to).

Uh people remember the FCC is not forcing Stern off the air. What the FCC is doing is they're cracking down on EVERY media provider on innapropriate content and CC, which is not a big carrier of Stern (only 6 stations), is the one that is refusing to carry Stern to score brownie points, remove a liablity, and make sure not a lot of $ is lost in the process.

Do you feel a heavy fine should be levied against Rush Limbaugh for the following...

On the day of the NH primary, he said John Kerry was unqualified to be commander-in-chief. As proof he cited a website that accused Kerry of participating in the killing of '21 innocent Vietnamese'. A few minutes later he was informed he had the wrong guy; it was Sen. Bob Kerrey who has admitted to this.

If that's the quote, then, no. I don't find anything there to be offensive or otherwise indecent. He didn't call them "21 innocent Charlie" or Slant-eyed's or anything...where would the problem be?

Having to backtrack like that makes Limbaugh look like an idiot, but there's nothing to fine him over there. Being an idiot isn't illegal.

Why does everything have to be equated to religion? Because someone is offended that Howard Stern offers graphic details of anal sex at 7 in the morning and allows his callers to ask about "fucking n****r chicks" you must be a religious fanatic?! It's called having some common decency.

AngelSlayer said he's a religious fundamentalist. Appearantly his personality or voting record would back such a claim, though it has only slight relevance to the topid at hand. Don't get carried away.

I hate to tell some of you this, but on issues like cencorship the left meets the right anyway. Just like the religious right, the PC left is just as outraged by this stuff and both sides meet in the middle.

This is about the only thing you said in this big rant that I approved of.

Well, anyone who is sick of the religious right trying to control what we see and hear go to stopFCC.com and sign their petition. Sure it will probably add up to nothing, but it will piss the government off ;)

Vyce, damnit, I just said it's not a conservative/liberal thing. It's idiocy on both sides. :bonk:

Heck, from the article you quoted:

Critics said the legislation would undermine free speech rights.

"We're moving in a direction of undermining the First Amendment," said Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.

Bravo, Rep. Paul, for standing up for free speech. I might not agree with him on anything else, but he did the right thing here.

*I* understand that.

Apparently, though, Howard Stern (and some on this board) live in some sort of alternate reality where it's just the evil conservatives / religious right who are coming down against his brand of comedy, and not.....oh, virtually the ENTIRE House of Representatives.

And as an aside, yes, this may be about free speech, and maybe you're right, but how incredibly depressing it is to have to champion a man's right to say the n-word on the airwaves.

Well, Stern's defense is that he's been doing this for many years, and how the government never bothered him until he started loudly being anti-Bush. I don't listen to him, I don't have an opinion, those are simply his views.

He's full of shit.

If you've followed radio (and I'm not sure if you have), they you would understand that the FCC has been cracking down on radio personalities (Howard ridiculously dubs them "Howard Stern clones") for the last several years. It's all been building up, and the Janet incident was the dam bursting.

Howard wasn't singled out because he's anti-Bush. Howard was singled out because the FCC, for better or worse, have been targeting out "shock jocks" and "indecency" for the last several years and now that there's even greater scrutiny on those radio personalities, Howard's the biggest target that's left.

Stern should be thrilled.

People will be more willing to overlook how much of a cliche of himself he has become and treat him as a martyr.

J, you need to add in the "We HAVE to protect the CHILDREN" brigade into the condemnation. Heck, they were more upset about Janet showing her droopy tit than the Christian right was.
