What is your opinion of Mike Tyson?

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

I will admit freely that I'm extremely biased. Since I was little, Mike Tyson has been and still is one of my all-time favorite athletes. I'm always coming to his defense, even when he's clearly fucked up. You know that one relative or friend a lot of us have who has problems, but you always stick up for them? That's Mike for me. And I've seen Mike get both sides of the Media Hype, from everyone loving him in the 1980s to every columnist/analyst getting on their high horse and ripping him apart with their, "He doesn't even deserve coverage, he makes me sick, but I'm talking about him anyway," thing. So I'm wondering, what do the rest of you think of Mike?

Any man who rapes a women is the lowest scum possible. The man has had way too many chances and enough is enough. How much money did he have? $33 million or something crazy like that. And what did he do? Loose it all because he is a dumb ass.

The only thing I'll give him is that he was a good fighter, but that is about it.

Basically, fuck him.

Would you leave room to consider that maybe he DIDN'T rape the woman? What would you think of him then?

I don't believe he raped that woman, because that woman had falsely accused someone raping her in High School, so her creditibility is questionable. If Tyson didn't have a Tax lawyer representing his case and had fair trial (way too one sided), I think he would've had better chance of getting off. Tyson could've been a great fighter but he abandon everything that was taught to him.

Maybe he didn't rape her, but he did state that he would have so it's not like he's some saint.

Oh, and I think he's a fucking nutjob.

Tyson was always an almost mythical figure with me as a kid... he was unbeatable... to actually defeat Mike Tyson, would end existence as we know it, at least thats how I felt. And when Buster Douglas beat him, it was insane. I was watching the fight live, and when Tyson went down, everyone in the room jumped. No one could believe it

That loss is a perfect example of one instance, one defeat causing the downfall of a career. After that, i lost all interest in him

When I see him on my tv, I still stop and watch... I still read about him, it's just that I dont really care that much. In my eyes, he's washed up and mentally unstable... a glorified prize fighter and nothing more

He'll likely never draw again. Beating Lewis was his last chance and he couldnt get the job done

My question... and something interesting to think about... is how would a Lewis/Tyson fight have been in Tysons prime?

I don't care about his personal life, I care about his professional life. In it, I have seen Tyson get his ass handed to him by anyone who's even remotely good. Thus, he's a loser. Send him to the retirement home with Hulk Hogan & Ricky Henderson and other former greats who are just embarrasing themselves. Tell him to take George Foreman with him.

For a headhunter, one-punch knockout guy he was the very best. I use to love watching him fight. As a person he comes off like a piece of crap though.

But he just doesn't have it like he use to. He's not a top contender anymore.

If you've ever seen the clips of Tyson with Cus D'Amato.. then that sorta puts another perspective on him.

He was used by the system. He's in a sport where a large number of athletes end up broke. For the time he was immortal, he could do whatever he pleased. In time, that all came back to hit him.

As a fighter = All in the punch. Not a great technical boxer, questionable chin. There just haven't been that many in recent time that could really beat him. The ones that could....did. Otherwise, if he would have fought when the Heavyweight division in it's golden years.....he would've had his ass handed to him.

As a person = Three words.....piece of shit.

Its sad that Mike had so much going for him at one point. I've seen a video with Mike Tyson featuring past heavyweights, and he comes off as a true student of the game. For four years, he was perhaps the greatest heavyweight of all time. Then he joined Don King and it all went to shit. His personal life collapsed, and his boxing skills stopped developing. That's he's still competitive late in his 30s is a testament to his raw talent.

I disagree that he had a questionable chin. He was rarely knocked down, and when he was KOed, it was only after a long, sustained beating. Lewis' chin is much more questionable.

As an aside regarding Foreman. Has anyone noticed that since the Thrilla in Manilla, he has NEVER been knocked out since?

The most entertaining person in the world, bar none. He never seizes to amaze me. I hope he becomes World Champ again, although it'll never happen. Mike Tyson = Money.

As a fighter he was amazing. He was much more than just the punch back in the late 80s, he was actually looking like one of the great all around boxers and the punch was just a bonus. I think jail ruined him. Ever since then he's been looking for the big punch and not focusing on the whole fight.

As a person he's definitely insane. I look at him as misguided, he's never had anyone he could fully trust outside of Cus D'Amato, and even Cus let him believe that he could get away with anything. He doesn't know who to trust anymore.

He lost any appeal he had in my eyes when Lewis totally owned him, and before that when Holyfield was on his way to beating him before losing an ear.

A focused, young, somewhat sane Mike Tyson would have beaten Lennox Lewis. He wouldn't have killed him because Lewis is just too big and too strong and has too good of a jab to get totally outboxed. Tyson at 21 was on his way to be an all-time great but two things happened, first Cus died, and second Don King made his way into the picture. After Cus died Tyson still had much of the same camp with him, but after King get with Tyson his whole career went to shit. The sad thing is Tyson is a guy who really never had anyone to look to for help. His parents weren't exactly the best, he actually found someone that looked out for him in Cus, and he died. The people that took care of him after Cus were good influences, but once the head guy died, everything just went to shit. King came around, fucked Tyson over, and stole millions of dollars from him in the process. The fact that Tyson had a fucking tax lawyer defend him in a rape case is pathetic. Had he had a somewhat knowledgeable and competent lawyer he would have probably gotten off, since he basically imo, had a Kobe Bryant-like situation on his hands.

As a person, Mike Tyson entertains me, and I mean he's a guy who came from absolutely nothing and made himself into a millionaire doing what he knew how to do best, fight. While his money is gone and he has been in jail numerous times, had he had better guidance as a 21,22 year old guy with more money that he could count, he probably would have turned out to be a somewhat decent citizen and i still think that he can be.

Lewis would have lasted about as long as Michael Spinks.

Juggernaut Tyson would've made mincemeat of Lewis at any level of his game. It wasn't that he was the biggest, or even necessarily the best boxer, but people were just SCARED of him, and with good reason.

This is the guy that used to legit punch old ladies in the face and take their money. This is the convicted rapist.

As a fighter, he's great, as a person, there's few worse, but as a character, there's none greater.

Holyfield was done in that match. Mike caught him with a right, Holyfield started holding and headbutting to stay up, Mike started feeling a little peckish and decided to have a little snack before finishing the match. Then the media makes a big deal of it...

I supported him during his rape trial -- that's about it.

With the way he spends money I pray he never runs for Congress...

or becomes a republican president

Are you kidding? That would be great.

1) The GOP's black-vote total would (at the very least) triple in the next election.

2) His speeches at "Family Values" events would be golden.

3) Debates on the campaign trail would rock.

What's not to like?...
