An American soldier home on leave from Iraq is refusing to return. Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejia wants to be declared a conscientious objector. He says he has seen too many civilians killed and the war is all about oil. Mejia, 28, insist he would rather be jailed than go back to Baghdad.Mejia, who is with the Florida National Guard, left Iraq on leave last October. He surrendered to an air force base on Monday and was ordered to report to his unit. "The justification for this war is money and no solider should go to Iraq and give his life for oil," he said. "I'm prepared to go to prison because I'll have a clear conscience." Mejia has been declared a deserter by the army. He could be jailed for a year if he does not return to his posting. Colleagues said Mejia was not a "coward" and had fought battles with him.

Wow...I can't say i'm exactly surprised. Now if only all American servicemen felt this way!

Despite my somewhat general liberal outlook on life, I actually think that he has no right to refuse to go anywhere the US Army wants to send him. At the end of the day he signed up to the Army so basically it's tough shit and he should do waht he is told.

I sometimes lie awake at night wondering how on earth individuals such as you have ever survived to adulthood without being stabbed in the throat by virtually everyone who has ever met you.

Come-on. If its about oil, then why did I just pay $1.89 a gallon? Its about Middle East stability, so oil doesn't go to $4.00 a gallon. Its about the stability of our economy.

Who got upset at their utility bills this Winter? Anyone remember inflation, from the energy crisis days of Jimmy Carter?

"It's about oil," is used by ignorant liberals who hate America.

Again, you opposed action in Iraq.

Why in the world would you SUPPORT action in N. Korea or Arabia?

You wouldn't. It's a red herring.

I oppose attacking any of those countries...

But Korea actually HAS admitted to wmds...and, judging by 9-11, Saudi Arabia poses a greater threat to US....why were they left alone to attack a different, uninvolved, country?

Regardless...I do not support attacking other countries. Without just cause.

See, that's the beauty of it - Bush makes money from the oil companies off high gas prices, plus he gets more oil from Iraq, which he can sell for big $$$. It's win-win!

(yes, that was sarcastic)

Because you'd be just as pissy about it.

Why bother right now?

We'll deal with them eventually --- well, provided Kerry doesn't get elected.

Here's an update.

A U.S. soldier who refused to return to Iraq after he as shaken by a gunfiight that killed innocent civilians reported to his unit Tuesday in preparation for his seeking conscientous objector status.

Staff Sgt. Camilo Meija walked into the building housing his Florida National Guard unit at the North Miami Armory after repeating his determination not to return to the Middle East and fight.

"I'm prepared to go to prison because I'll have a clear conscience" Meija said.

Meija, 28, of Miami Beach, was in Iraq for about five months last year until October, when he return home on leave. He did not return to duty. He surrendered Monday at an air force base in Massachusetts and was ordered to return to Florida and report to his National Guard unit.

"This is an oil driven war, and I don't think any soldier signs up to fight for oil," Meija said Monday after arriving at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

In Iraq on Tuesday, officials said two other soldiers were seeking objector status there.

Lt.-Col Ron Tittle, a Florida NG spokeman, said Meija would likely be sent to Fort Stewart, Georgia, to meet with a military legal services team.

Meija said he was particularly upset over an incident in Iraq in which he and others were ambushed and innocent civilians were hit in the ensuing gunfire.

A native of Nicaragua, Meija is a permanent resident of the US who served in the army for three years. He had served in the NG for five years when his unit was called to active duty. In civilian life he was a psychology student at the University of Miami.

He said he joined the military upon his arrival in the US so he could work his way into American society. He could not say whether he might be deported because of his refusal to serve, but said "Whatever sacrifice I have to make, I have to go there."

Don't give him the status.

He went AWOL. He screwed over his fellow troops.

Send him to jail or deport him.

Whatever...the guy got shaken by some things he saw in war. It happens. Big F'N deal.

And the reason you are paying more at the pumps is because whenever the oil companies see a chance to push up prices, they do it. People see something is happening in the middle east...push up oil prices...everyone will assume its because of the war.

Just big business being big bitches again. It doesn't prove this war was or wasn't about oil.

Well I.....

Dammit, you just completely typed up my answer only made it make sense.

"Oil" is nothing more than a buzz word.

Of course they look for and use any reason to jack up the price of oil, and they get away with it because we really don't have a choice on whether to buy it or not.

The thing that pisses me off is that we have no legal recourse that I'm aware of to deal with their potential gouging of prices (I do not know if they are now --- but they did it in the 70's and anytime a problem arose in the Middle East, so it's not beyond the realm of the possible). This should be a crime, but I don't think it is.

Question: Why does every post you make here seem to involve your hatred for liberals? How does that add anything to the folder? It's actually very Rob Stone-esque.

In any case, I consider myself to be a pretty liberal guy; and I supported the war in Iraq. I would also support liberating North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and any other country that mistreats its people and/or threatens the people of other nations. Did I believe Iraq had WMDs? No. But I thought we should've gone in regardless. It's about justice, not partisan politics.

If he doesn't want to go back then he should have to pay for all his college loans, or at least pro-rate the cost...

why. The man served his country, risked his life for a cause he now thinks is wrong. I would say that he has more than repaid his country for those college loans and things by fighting in the war.

Nope. He has a duty to perform for the repayment of those loans.

He did not perform the duty fully.

Thus, he has to repay them.

Yes, deport the man who risked his own life to protect us. The guy was obviously shaken by things he saw and possibly did during the war and he doesn't want to go back. He's already done a hell of a lot more for this country than most people ever will.

Non-citizen who went AWOL. Seems pretty cut and dried there.

Yeah, most of us won't be able to go AWOL. Alas.
