Guest MikeSC Report post Posted March 19, 2004 Taiwan's President AND VP have both been shot today. Neither are dead (nor do they appear to be in danger of dying) --- but this does have to raise the question of WHO did it? If it turns out to be China, what the heck do WE do about it? While we don't officially recognize Taiwan (gee, thanks for that one, Nixon), we can't allow them to attempt to assassinate the leaders of Taiwan. -=Mike

Guest MikeSC Report post Posted March 19, 2004 What CAN we do? Invade China? If it IS China (definitely not a guarantee --- Taiwanese politics is mighty screwy as is) --- we should, at the bare minimum, remove the MFN status from them. -=Mike
Highland 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2004 If it was China then the US will (and should) remove the MFN status as Mike suggested, as well as impose some trade sanctions. There might also be some military action, more along the lines of moving an aircraft career or two into the region in a show of force, but a strike or invasion is out of the question. One concern is that France and China have been doing some joint military exercises as of late. Again, I'm not saying China is behind this --- but this might be an issue if it turns out that they were. -=Mike

Guest Cerebus Report post Posted March 20, 2004 Barring the return of a Mao like Chinese leader or a major military fuck up China won't be invading Taiwan, this is all a lot of saber-rattling.
