EricMM Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 So it's finally been 17 years since the last brood of periodical Cicadas have popped out to bother people, and it's going to happen again. If you live east of the Great Plains in America, I'm told that you will be dealing with these numerous bugs. I barely remember much about the last brood (I was four) but if what I'm hearing is correct, we will have up to 100,00 bugs per acre around tree-filled areas. The bugs, although harmless, are clumsy and will probably bump into people willy-nilly. They're planned to appear on May 1st, anyone remember the last set of periodical Cicadas?
Guest OctoberBlood Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 Never heard of them til now. Seriously. :| Looks like an overgrown fly.
Guest Vitamin X Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 And in Florida everything is mutated because of the extreme humidity... OH GOD.
Guest jpclemmons Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 unrelated to the thread. but what site did you find the anyone but Bush sig? thanks in advance.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 the worst thing about cicadas is that they sound like lawnmowers. You won't sleep for months if you get them.
Guest Vitamin X Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 They're not coming around here in Miami are they? ARE THEY??
Guest Ram Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 A few stragglers used to come around when we lived in the woods a few years ago. They're enormous bugs and sound like enlarged mutant flies. I can't imagine having a plague of them covering your screen porch.
Jobber of the Week Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 unrelated to the thread. but what site did you find the anyone but Bush sig? thanks in advance. He stole it from my sig.

Guest Vitamin X Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 But hey we can all display it proudly, dammit!
Vyce Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Back on topic, bitches. Yes, I remember them. Seventeen long years ago. I fed these fucking things to my dog by the HUNDREDS, just to hear the wonderfully cool crunching sound the thoraxes made as my pooch crunched them. I have another dog now, and I look forward to introducing him to the joys (as well as high-in-protein nutrition!) of eating dozens and dozens of bizarre-looking locusts.
Styles Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 OH MY GOD, IT'S THE THIRD SIGN OF THE APOCOLYPSE! WE'RE ALL DOOMED! jumps out the window
BX Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Not only will the 17 year brood out in full force, the 5 year brood will too. This'll be fun times. BTW, I'm the first person who ever thought of the phrase, "Anyone But Bush 2004". Recognize bitches.
Gert T Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Yes I remember them too, every Memorial Day our church goes camping, and as a 6 year old pussy boy I hated that weekend. It looks like Fear Factor is going to be running shows this summer, and why doesn't PETA beat down FF's door?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 One of my favorite sounds, other than singing frogs.
EricMM Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 *BUMP* Due to the three cicadas on my doorstep this morning. They're HEEEEERE :)
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 They haven't hit us yet, but it's still been a little chilly. If this recent heat and humidity keeps up, they'll be as big as birds by the end of the week.

Just a quick heads up, but I remember reading somewhere that the cicadas are very bad for animals to eat, so you might want to look into that for the health of your pooch.
lomasmoney Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 shit I had never heard of them until I went down to Cincinnati and the little fuckers were the lead in story on the 5 o'clock news well after the former reporter turned child molester, but still they were on the news 24-7
Styles Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Excerpt from a Baltimore Sun article: Cicadas don't bother house pets - quite the opposite. Cats and dogs often find the surfeit of clumsy, crunchy insects the irresistible equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet. They just don't know when to stop eating. Dr. Kim Hammond, a veterinarian at the Falls Road Animal Hospital, remembers the 1987 invasion. "The dogs got into huge piles of them, got sick and threw up," he said. "They don't even chew - they inhale."
Dr. Tyler; Captain America Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 There have been a freaking metric assload on my front porch for the last week or so. They're disgusting and they make my fiance scream. So I have no problem with them

So I have no problem with them Using the metric system? Commie... Heck, I'm shocked we don't have them here, as every other insect known to man thrives around here. -=Mike ...The roaches carry guns, for God's sake
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 These things are big enough to whack with a tennis racket. What fun.
Guest MikeSC Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 These things are big enough to whack with a tennis racket. What fun. OK, I'm baffled --- what the bloody hell ARE cicadas? They like cockroach variations or something? -=Mike
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Magicicada septidecum If I remember my biology at all, they're their own separate class of insect.
Styles Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 I think they're a breed of locusts. I remember reading some article trying to scientifically explain the 10 plagues of Egypt, and explaining the locusts as coming during a year of Cicada breakout because they're like locusts. realizes he probably just started what will be an 11 page topic on the bible vs. science...walks out whistling innocently
