nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Not really relevant to the series and all, but can I just point out that the Tampa Bay PBP radio guy is an embarrasment to the profession? WEEI (the Boston sports radio station) plays his calls every day after games, and it's just laughable that he still has a job. I mean, really, Joey Styles' voice didn't even jump as many octaves as this guy's does after goals. That crap might fly if you were a college broadcaster, but he's supposed to be a professional, have at least SOME composure. I agree that Mishkin get a bit too excited ... he's not as bad as that idiot for the Penguins (the one that makes up the stupid long-ass sayings) but he's definitely crossed the line of professionalism. It's one thing to be biased and excitable, but you have to draw the line somewhere.
smh810 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. That's about all I can say. The Flames did totally deserve that win though. I'm about as big a Lightning fan as anyone, but I have to say something that's been bugging the hell out of me lately... Where the hell has Dave Andreychuk been in this series? If I was in his shoes and hadn't touched the Stanley Cup in 22 YEARS, I think my 42 year old legs might just be able to churn a little bit more, ala Steve Yzerman with his gimpy knee the last time the Wings were in the finals. (Born in Detroit, raised in Tampa) Anyways, I hope to God there is a Game 7, and for anyone who is in the area, I'll be at the Forum, outside (my poor ass can't get in) chugging beer at 12 noon and watching the game on the big screen, even though it's like 25 dollars for parking. I would like to see Andreychuk contribute more myself although I don't think he's played badly in this series. The three dogs in this series have been Stillman (who was benched and deserved it) Modin (who finally stepped up last night) and Lukowich (also benched). If they win Game 6 I may venture to the Forum plaza myself Monday night. I agree that Mishkin get a bit too excited ... he's not as bad as that idiot for the Penguins (the one that makes up the stupid long-ass sayings) but he's definitely crossed the line of professionalism. It's one thing to be biased and excitable, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Point taken but Mishkin is hardly the only guy who gets excited like that. You brought up Mike Lang in Pittsburgh, have you ever heard the TV guy in Buffalo, or the radio guy for Calgary, and there was once a radio guy for Detroit who's voice got just as high as Mishkin's (I'm not sure if he's still there). Its not uncommon at all for TV or radio announcers to get excited like that. Plus, you're being paid by the team not a national entity like ESPN and in that case you can be as biased as you want IMO. Dale and Gordie (the guys that do the Bruins games) are definitely biased, but they don't shriek like school girls over goals or missed penalties. That's the line that I mean shouldn't be crossed; obviously they're being paid to cater to a certain team's fans so have to call the game with a bias towards that team. It's when the guys scream and holler and shriek that I think the line is crossed.

No kidding...on the morning show on our sports radio station, they've nicknamed him "The Condor," because they determined that his voice most closely represents the screech of a condor when he announces a Lightning goal. Am I the only one who really hates the way he calls opponents' goals, though? It's like they're an afterthought..."Oh, Saprykin scores." I can understand being let down when someone scores on your team, but the extremes he takes it to are unacceptable.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Joe Bowen and Harry Neale. Worst announcing team ever.
the max 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Jeff Rimer and Denis Potvin are far worse, I'm sure.
treble 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Joe Bowen and Harry Neale. Worst announcing team ever. Nuts to that. Bowen's a homer, obviously, but he brings an excitement to the game and is almost as enthusiastic when whoever the Leafs play score (assuming the Leafs are on the road). He doesn't scream 'HOLY MACKINAW!', of course, but the excitement's still there to a degree.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 oh, he does. Better than Bob Cole though. Cole gets excited when the game picks up or near the net. Bowen is excited about many things, but overdoes it at times.
smh810 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Jeff Rimer and Denis Potvin are far worse, I'm sure. Amen to that Max. Folks, you've havent heard a bad announce team till you've heard Potvin and Rimer. By the way Max, have you ever watched Rick Peckham and Bobby Taylor call games on Sunshine and if so what do you think of them? (Thats where "The Chief" is for you older Flyer fans)
Dogbert 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 or the radio guy for Calgary Um, up here, we always say that Maher sounds just as excited when the other team scores. The only way we can tell is by the goal horn.

Tawren 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2004 Maher and the Fan 960 >>>>> all. Listen on NHL.com for the next game instead of the shit from CBC or ABC.

By the way Max, have you ever watched Rick Peckham and Bobby Taylor call games on Sunshine and if so what do you think of them? (Thats where "The Chief" is for you older Flyer fans) For some reason I get Sunshine Network, but it never airs Lightning games. It's weird. So the answer is no. RepoMan 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 I have to say the Buffalo TV team is by far the worst. I've never heard worse whining and/ or spin when they lose and such gloating when they win.
treble 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Yeah, but 'LA-LA-LA-LA-LAFONTAINNNNNNE!' is classic stuff, so that excuses them somewhat.

MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 So... Did Calgary just get screwed again or not? Puck was over the line but it was kicked in by accident (maybe?)

iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 This is an excellent game. Just the battling over every puck has been great, and there's been some good offensive hockey too. I really think Kiprusoff should have stopped one of those two goals, but other than it's been an excellent game. I'd love to see the Flames get the cup, but if I was forced to make a prediction right now, I'd say the Lightning are gonna send it back to Tampa. Of course, I've been wrong many times all through these playoffs, so that doesn't really mean much. All you have to do is look back to Game 7 against the Canucks to see a game where it looked like the Flames were definitely gonna lose. Anyway, GO FLAMES!
