EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 I'm not a participater as much as I just read them. I do miss Rob Neyer's columns though.
the max Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Tonight when the very good Czech Republic v. Canada game tied at 3 and heading into OT, ESPN cuts to a meaningless college football game, leaving hockey fans in the dark. Again.
Guest Smues Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 I knew that TK wasn't gonna be a judge this time on Dreamjob so I wasn't going to watch since he was the only reason I watched the first season. So I tuned in just to see who were the judges, and the first one is Woody Paige so damn now I have to watch. But judge number 3 is Screamin' A Smith. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
The Czech Republic Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 "I THINK THAT YOU DID DO A GREAT JOB! AS YOU CAN PLAINLY SEE, I SUPPORT YOU ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. HOWEVAH, you could talk about the Lakahs a little more. Jus a little." "No, SCREAMIN A. Smith, you've got it all wrong! He should be talking about one man, and that's JIM THORPE!"
The Man in Blak Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/...e-goes-for-pay/ Killer article on ESPN and Joe Morgan.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 That article hit the bullseye.
Brett Favre Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 What's wrong with thinking Dave Concepcion is the best player not in the hall? Stats don't tell EVERYTHING.
Guest Anglesault Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 And they cut away from a game that means something to me, in the middle of an at bat, mind you, so I can see Bonds make out live or something. I don't know what I would have done if I had to wait two hours for that when they dedicate 15 minutes of Baseball Tonight to his 0 for 3 night.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 What's wrong with thinking Dave Concepcion is the best player not in the hall? Stats don't tell EVERYTHING. Because there is no logical argument for Concepcion besides that he had a bunch of great teammates. Morgan putting Concepcion in the Hall would be on the level of all the ex-Cardinals and ex-Giants that made the Hall for the sole reason that Frankie Frisch was chair of the veterans' committee.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 And they cut away from a game that means something to me, in the middle of an at bat, mind you, so I can see Bonds make out live or something. I don't know what I would have done if I had to wait two hours for that when they dedicate 15 minutes of Baseball Tonight to his 0 for 3 night. Another record shattered that I will no longer give a shit about, especially in the age of "muscle enhancement drugs". Of course, the only record that I still care about was Cal Ripkens streak of god knows how many games played consecutively (I can't remember the exact number, but its gotta be around the 2,100 mark considering 162 (or 161) games a year for 13 or so years)
Guest Anglesault Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 I actually heard somewhere that a far greater percentage of the ESPN audience cares about Ichiro's chase than Bonds'. I would assume that's wrong, because I'm sure we'd stop getting 15 minutes of Bonds doing nothing everynight and a "By the way, the Jap hit something" report on Sportscenter.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 What's Ichiro going after, I forgot. I want to say most hits in first three seasons (or three seasons period), but I'm not sure. I have a horrible memory when it comes to out of town teams.
Slayer Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 What's Ichiro going after Single season hits
Guest Staravenger Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 What's Ichiro going after Single season hits I knew it was something like that, I just blanked for a moment. Here's another ineresting record: Most amount of horrible hair styles on a team: the current Boston Red Sox. Yech!
Slayer Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Most amount of horrible hair styles on a [baseball] team Late 80's A's

I think any big round number trumps the hits record at this point. Now when Ichiro gets to 257 and 258, that's notable. But what is exciting about 234?
Guest Anglesault Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Most amount of horrible hair styles on a [baseball] team Late 80's A's Nixon and Arroyo push Boston back over the top.
Slayer Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Come on now Between McGwire, Welch and Eck's mullets, Canseco's Stallone hair and Rickey's jerry curl... that's just a no-brainer

I think any big round number trumps the hits record at this point. Sure. But he hasn't done it. So mention Bonds ONCE, during the Giants game recap, just like you do with every other player that did nothing of real note in the day. Don't interupt games that actually mean something in a pennant race so we can all see the EXCITEMENT~! of a ground out. When he gits 700, have Joe Morgan say "Bonds did it, see highlights on Sportscenter. Now, back the the game at hand"
Guest Anglesault Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Come on now Between McGwire, Welch and Eck's mullets, Canseco's Stallone hair and Rickey's jerry curl... that's just a no-brainer Right, a no brainer. Red Sox all the way. Manny, Pedro and Jesus even them up with the guys you've mentioned already. Factor in Bellhorn's Pubehair, Arroyo, Nixon, and Millar's Marilyn period, the Red Sox take the cake.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Come on now Between McGwire, Welch and Eck's mullets, Canseco's Stallone hair and Rickey's jerry curl... that's just a no-brainer Sosa's curl was a lot worse than Rickey Hendersons (Sosa in the earlier part of his career) I almost threw up laughing while sorting through my collection of Chicago White Sox cards and saw that.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Here's a legitimate reason to be upset about the Bonds thing. I do think its worth keeping an eye on. But in Arizona, Randy Johnson has TIED Steve Carlton for 2nd all time in strikeouts. I haven't even seen a mention.

Because ESPNs version of a "mention" would be cutting to his game everytime there's a two strike count.

When looking at highlight length and placement on SportsCenter for Bonds vs. Ichiro, you should probably factor in the Giants are playing for the postseason while the Mariners are playing to get the season out of the way so they can start playing golf.
Guest Smues Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 I hate how ESPN will hype something, tell you how great it is and to watch it, then cut away from it when it's on for something else. Tonight it's The Red Sox vs. The Yankees which they've hyped like mad, being cut for Bond's. But they do this all the time. WATCH THIS WATCH THIS WATCH THIS....oops sorry we think this new thing is more imporant. Don't tell me to watch something and then not deliver.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Blech...this argument should die. Some people like Bonds and him reaching 700, some don't. Fin.
JHawk Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Blech...this argument should die. Some people like Bonds and him reaching 700, some don't. Fin. Then there's people like me who don't like Bonds but would have rather seen the actual milestone live than on tape delay. But if they're going to cut away from the game for Bonds, they should have for Johnson too.
Guest Smues Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Blech...this argument should die. Some people like Bonds and him reaching 700, some don't. Fin. I'm not just bitching about Bonds. I hate whenever they do it, for whatever reason. Oh and another reason ESPN sucks, this who has the worst curse on trial crap.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Don't these ESPN people have anything better to do than make jokey "Trials" about the Yankees payroll or the Sox/Cubs curses? How about solving the case of why the station sucks.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 This is so horrible it's funny in a bad way. Makes me feel sorry that these people are arguing which team sucks worse. Cubs: We suck because some guy with a billy goat told us we would. Red Sox: We suck because we sold a fat old man with girl legs to the Yankees.
