Guest cpac Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Has anybody else seen this movie yet? I watched this movie early this afternoon and it was pretty good. Thomas Jane did a good job as the punisher and the action sequences were quite good. I will be looking forward to future movies in this series.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Saw it today. Overall, a good movie. But I left disappointed. See, I've read the Punisher comics, and I can say....there was way too LITTLE violence in this film to really call itself "The Punisher". I understand why they didn't use more, and what they did do was done well......they actually had Castle outsmart his foes rather than just immediately blow them away....but still, I left disappointed. Good flick; I'd like to see a sequel. But for my money, Hellboy is the better comic-book movie.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 They had to spend so much time on the set-up that a lot of the action got lost in the shuffle. It's a good, solid first effort. Very much like "X-Men" the action is light and the character establishment is the frontline. I enjoyed it, I understood where they were going with it and they didn't have Castle turn into a nice guy at any point really. Just don't go in expecting an action packed romp, the film takes up a lot of time with plot and seeing how crafty Punisher is in the future. Jane does a very good job with his emotion in his face and he's actually a better choice for the character than I thought he would be. It needs a sequel, it's got a great story and the second one would be allowed to be more action based.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 I loved it. Aside from the bad guy changes it pretty much follows the Welcome Back Frank storyline which is excellent.
BlackFlagg 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Saw it and enjoyed it quite a bit...also liked how the license plate on his car said "Year One", heh
Guest Beingz0wningj00 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Well I saw Hellboy last night over the Punisher... and I was disappointed by the film. I did like it, don't get me wrng, but the only character developed was Hellboy... making the movie REALLY hard to follow, unless you read the comics I'm guessing(Which I haven't). I think I want to give this flick a chance... but I'm gonna go for Kill Bill Vol 2 first...
slimm44 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Yeah I saw it last night and since it was filmed in Tampa my friends and I noticed where some of the buildings were. I enjoyed it. I'll probably see it again within the week too.
Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Easily one of the best movies I've seen. The plot, the action, the characters, everything clicked on all cylinders IMO. Thomas Jane did a great job, as did Travolta. I loved the way the Punisher outsmarted Saint, and... SPOILERS Set up Quentin and Livia to look like they were having an affair, causing him to kill them both. It was one final "fuck you" to the guy who had his family killed, and I dug every second of it. Favorite scene had to be the apartment fight, when he jammed the knife through the guys jaw and up through his mouth.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted April 17, 2004 The movie absolutely fucking ruled. We saw it as a result of our ineptitude to have time to see Kill Bill Vol. 1 for those in our group of friends who hadn't seen it so we could see Volume 2, and well...long story short, it didn't work out and I pushed my friends to go see Punisher instead, and we definitely did not regret it. Guest El Satanico Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Well I'd be worried if the Nash question is answered by something other than "He only had one line prior to dying horribly".
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted April 17, 2004 I barely recognized him. But yeah he's pretty much what you could expect from him...

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Nash didn't have a line and didn't even look like Nash. He looked like a old and rugged Dolph and now that I think about it, he might have been a dig at the first Punisher. Nash didn't say a line....well sorta a line but it wasn't words. He wasn't a dig at the first Punisher. He's the same character as in the comic book. Only the one in the comic book told a bunch of jokes and was in love with American super heroes. Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted April 17, 2004 I saw The Punisher earlier today and I really liked it. Going in, I had relatively low expectations due to the amount of negative reviews it received. I was pleasantly surprised with the movie and thought it was one of the better comic book adaptations. I didn't mind the pace of the movie, as it didn't really seem to slow down at any point. In my opinion, the movie contained the right amount of story and action. I'll definitely pick up the DVD when it is released. Other thoughts/questions (I'll use makeshift spoiler tags just in case) -I thought Nash's death was a bit underwhelming. -The humor wasn't too offensive, but I thought it was a bit much (the "torture" scene with the steak and popsicle, Castle's reaction when Nash destroyed his gun, most of the stuff with Castle's neighbors). -I liked how Castle set up Mrs. Saint and Quentin. -I liked a lot of the kills (Harry Heck, paper cutter blade to the guy outside the apartment, knife through the chin and skull, etc). -How did Quentin manage to get Castle's FBI file? Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2004 Couple of things. -In the comic The Punisher learns that The Russian's skin is really sensitive to hot things so they end up fighting down the hall into Bumpo's apartment. Bumpo by the way is an older gentleman and a whole hell of a lot bigger. He takes about 4 hot pizza's that Bumpo has and throws them in The Russian's face. When the Russian falls over he grabs Bumpo and shoves him over onto him and they sit there for about an hour while The Russian suffocates. -The Russian comes back in the follow up series though as a cyborg monster with gigantic boobs. Yes he has huge tits. A side-effect of the drugs that they are using on him. And he ends up fighting Punisher and Spider Man. -Joan's character in the comic was a lot different. She was a mousey scared girl that only left her apartment to bring The Punisher cookies and she was to scared to leave. I can't remember if she had a job or not. -Nobody knew he was The Punisher until the end of the comic when he left.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2004 Wow. The previews I saw didn't do much for me, but these reviews are telling another story. I'm not into comics, but I always liked the punisher. Maybe because he had the same first name I do, maybe because he really wasn't a superhero and just a normal guy with lots o' guns. Either way, I hope this movie is successful... Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted April 18, 2004 Very good movie, it will be added to my DVD collection when released. - Thomas Jane is a underrated actor and I think he did a very good job here, as did John Travolta, who is always good when he plays the villian. I've never read the comic, but does The Punisher outsmart his foes there as he does here ? - Even in Hollywood, Kevin Nash still manages to hold somebody down... SPOILERS: - Turning the tables on Saint leading him to kill his best friend and his wife... touche. - I liked the fact that Frank never let Joan become his "Love Interest" and I liked how Frank thought of suicide. He completed his mission and felt that he didn't have a reason to live after it was all done, but didn't do it. The end leaves room for a sequel, assuming this is successful. - I liked how Saint died, but the cars blowing up, and the buring skull was overdone.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2004 John Travolta, who is always good when he plays the villian Did you see Battlefield Earth? He was very good in face off though and he was very good in this. Didn't ham it up like I was afraid he would. As for the Russian, I'm just saying the way Nash looked it made me think it was a dig at Dolph. I didn't think it was really, I just thought if you didn't know much about the Punisher other than the Dolph movie, you might have seen the Russian as a dig. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Good news, the 14 million opening weekend is the largest opening ever for a Lions Gate Film. If Punisher can hold well next weekend then maybe the sequel won't be out of the question.
Kaertos 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 I wish they would have skipped the goofy neighbors. I didn't like any of them and kind of inwardly groaned every time they came on screen. And while the fight with The Russian was pretty good, it was played way to funny and kind of broke me out of the movie. I liked it, but I will probably skip the entire "Dinner with the neighbors" through the Russian on DVD.

Jesus this was the first comic book movie that stayed true to the original story(more or less) and people are complaining about it. I would've been pissed had they left the neighbors out. Guest Astro Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Movie kind of bombed with only a 14 million dollar take.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Actually no, it didn't bomb. It's the highest opening for a Lions Gate film ever. Lions Gate didn't spend a ton of money on this film, the film only cost 33 million to make and they didn't really promote the hell out of it. To make back nearly half of its budget in opening weekend is good for Lions Gate and it has a better chance of getting a sequel.
Guest cpac Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Plus it is a rated R movie. They cuts out a ton of potential viewers.
