notJames 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 The finish to the Foley match was a bit anti-climactic, if only for the camerawork. I was hoping for Orton to throw the barbed-wire board onto a prone Foley and then pinning him that way. That would have sealed the deal, I think. As it stands, even though I still find his mic work and in-ring skills bland, Orton's at least showed me he has heart. The Jericho/Trishtian match and the main event made the PPV solid. The rest of the matches were what they were.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 And yet Foley still just had to came back to the ring (big fucking surprise) and I piss on him for it. Now that he did the JOB, he can go back home and write another book for all I care. That's retarded. Foley's a grown man- he can do what he wants. In his book he never said he was officially retired but that he would only come back for the right match in the sense that this feud was so big that he was forced out of retirement. How anyone can piss on Foley is beyond me
haVoc 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Of course the match didn't have the same emotions as the first. It wasn't Benoit winning his first WWE heavyweight title. The crowd heat in the match and the harassment of Shawn Michaels is enough to get my emotions going on a high level and I had a lot of fun watching the match last night. After the Foley/Orton match I thought "The main event better be good to top this" and I think it did. As far as Orton goes, I don't think anyone has ever acused him of being lazy and not trying. He always looks like he's trying hard. He just fucks up a lot along the way. Maybe now those days are behind him.... Hopefully.
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 The finish to the Foley match was a bit anti-climactic True, but isn't that the advantage of having a finisher of death such as the RKO since its booked to kill you out of nowhere?
notJames 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 My beef with the finish was that the second RKO onto the barbed wire bat didn't look devastating enough. I don't know if it was the camerawork or the suddenness of the attack or the logistics of slamming a guy's face into the bat with your arm tucked under his chin, but it just didn't come off well on TV. The whole story of the match was one of viciousness and ultra-violence, so it would stand to reason that the finish would be a culmination of that. This ending just didn't live up to what the rest of the match promised. That's not to say that it ruined the whole match for me. I was mightily impressed with the damage both guys took. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 I still think Orton would've been ultra hardcore had he taken an irish whip into the barb wire board.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 I don't remember his user name, but someone always posts links for the IWS in Misc. Promotions, and a bunch of the guys there take crazy glass/barbed wire/etc type bumps without shirts (one actually takes the bump in only a thong, if I remember correctly)
Aero 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 I haven't read into the results too in depth, but would the replay be worth ordering? I actually ended up trying to order last night, both at 8:00 and 11:00, and the cable company screwed up, so I missed it both times.

The Main event, Chris Jericho / Christian - Trish, and Foley / Orton were pretty good. Shelton / Flair was decent. The rest was lackluster. You make the call. King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 My beef with the finish was that the second RKO onto the barbed wire bat didn't look devastating enough. Well, the RKO was the wrong move because Orton had to make sure Foley's face hit, and therefore it didn't look like a good RKO. Anywho: Benjamin/Flair: I liked it, but it wasn't good...if that makes sense. Nice little spots, but there was not enough flow to the match. Still, it was decent enough. ** Coach/Tajiri: Coach hitting the armdrag gave me memories of Rodman. Except...you know...the lack of crowd pop. Credit to Coach for trying, but he didn't heel it up enough for my liking. The dropkick to the back of the head was sick. 3/4* Jericho vs. X/Trish: Fun match...I thought Trish might un-turn until the clothesline. Where they go from here is what worries me though. **3/4 Vicky vs. Lita: Looked great in fast forward. Vicky does a standing moonsault, and apart from that I didn't watch much of it. N/R Orton/Foley: They did a great job here. Foley took his bumps, and I was worried it'd be a Foley bumpfest again. I'm STILL in shock that Orton took the tack bump. Major kudos to him for that, and for the fact he sold it like a champ. He had a shitload of tacks in his arm. The finish was slightly weak, but other than that it was great. ***1/2 And to think, before Backlash I read someone saying Orton was a pussy because he couldn't blade properly. Boy, I bet they're shocked now. Hurricane/Rosey vs. La Resistance: Well, I got a cheap laugh out of Eugene's earlier skit...this was painful though. And they did the Heat camera work for the match too, which wasn't a good thing. 1/2* Edge vs. Kane: When the most heat the match got was a 'You Screwed Bret' chant, I feared the worst. Boring stuff. 1/2* Benoit vs. HHH vs. HBK: Very nice, and they did the Sharpshooter spot. And man, were those 'Shawn Screwed Bret' chants brutal or what? Benoit goes over, and I'm happy. Very nice match, great ending. ****
Guest Adrian 3:16 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 and still hasn't and never will do anything of value. Wrong again, buddy. What exactly has RICO done that's been worthwhile? Well he's from Deon Dark's hometown, and apparently that's good enough for him... Rico's okay and I have nothing against him, but to imply he's ever made or ever will make a contribution to wrestling anywhere NEAR Foley's level is insane. Styles 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 I just want to say I've rewatched the 3 way, and I'm upping it to ****1/2. It's a really excellent match, that suffered a little on first viewing not only from WM comparisons, but also general fatigue and following the Foley/Orton showstealer. It's just really good, only part I didn't like was the slow 3 or 4 minute segment where Shawn is laid out on the table and HHH applies the camel clutch. Still, the Wrestlemania match was ***** and was absolutely perfect. Anyway Backlash 3 way is defintely on my top 5 list for the year, still behind the WM 3 way, Eddy/Brock and MAYBE the Rumble. I'm gonna watch Foley/Orton again so I can more objectively rate it.

Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 19, 2004 To jump into the little "arguement" about Foley dressing as Jack but still using SOCKO... If you recall Foley said "I can't control what side of me comes out"...so I took his SOCKO/BARBIE spot as a reflection of that, each side of Cactus Foley working at the same time. If a man listening to his talking sock telling him to hit someone with a barbed wire bat he named "Barbie" doesn't scream psychotic, I don't know what does... Anyway, rewatched that match, rating really doesn't change, **** seems about right. Sick brawl, both guys worked like champs. I still can't believe Orton took that thumbtack bump. You can see his eyes bug out and he starts dry heaving immmediately after. Insane.

Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2004 Where, exactly? If you care so much, why don't you go look it up yourself? I had a look over this thread, Dean, you pretentious twat. If you made some half-assed point about Rico 6 months ago in a thread I don't care about then this argument is already dead in the water. Until you can offer a valid point to support your Rico-lovefest, then I'll just assume you have no good reason at all and are just being a tool. Didn't you just the other day state that if Rico wasn't from your home town, you wouldn't cheer him? Kind of makes your support for him seem a little worthless. Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted April 20, 2004 Don't bother. If the guy cannot even support his claims and simply says "No, you're wrong", then he doesn't have an argument at all. I already stated my reasons and I'm not going to repeat myself. Oh and Guns and Roses are overrated pieces of horseshit. - Deon What was the point of mentioning Guns and Roses? Was that a half-ass attempt at flaming UYI for voicing a negative opinion on your favorite wrestler? Where, exactly? If you care so much, why don't you go look it up yourself? I'll try to be of some help. If you're still interested, Deon mentioned some of his reasons for liking Rico in this thread. Back to the original topic, I thought Backlash was a solid PPV. I'll have to watch the PPV again before I can give the matches a proper rating, but I'd rate Orton-Foley around **** and the main event around ****1/4-****1/2.
