The Rifftrax for 300 is up!

http://www.rifftrax.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=80

A small band of brave men struggle against enormous odds, battling a superior force, and though ultimately they are defeated their sacrifice becomes a source of inspiration and hope that rings out like a clarion call through the pages of history. But enough about the Mighty Ducks. 300, in contrast, is about a gang of shirtless and immoral baby-killing idiots who hack up a larger group of idiots on some cliff in Greece a couple of thousand years ago. To a soundtrack of ersatz Nine Inch Nails.

Starring Gerard Butler as a shrieking inarticulate Scotsman (so in other words "a Scotsman"), 300 delivers on its promise to be the bloodiest movie since Carrie 2: Carrie vs. Saw. (Though it should be noted that in lieu of blood, 300 utilized digital globs of diluted road tar.)

To make it a fair fight, Mike enlisted the help of battle veterans Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. 3 against the 300! This…is…RIFFTRAX!

Our friends at Rhino Home Video have given us the list of episodes to be

included in THE MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 COLLLECTION, VOLUME 12.

They will be:

episode 419- THE REBEL SET (with short: JOHNNY AT THE FAIR)

episode 504- SECRET AGENT SUPER DRAGON

episode 612- THE STARFIGHTERS

episode 811- PARTS: THE CLONUS HORROR

Extras on the set will include:

Original Theatrical Trailers

MST3K Video Jukebox, Vol. 3

Interview with "The Rebel Set" star Don Sullivan

MST Hour "Jack Perkins" Wraps for "The Rebel Set"

Interview with "Parts: The Clonus Horror" director Robert Fiveson

The tentative release date for the set is October 2.

Still not at the awesomeness levels of volume 4 and 5, but that's a pretty great set right there. Parts is enough to sell me on it, throw in secret agent super dragon and johnny at the fair and it's gold. And the extras look nice as usual lately. Video Jukebox Vol 3? Fuck yeah.

If only I could get a ride on one of those.

Haven't seen the episodes so it's a surprise for me each time I pick up a set.

I know it's late in the day and the chances are slim to fuck all, but is there anywhere I can get MST3K vol 10 without paying over 100 quid for it?

The funny thing is, I only really want it for the Giant Spider Invasion

PACKERS! WOOOOO PACKERS!!

"We can't hunt, we're not drunk enough!"

"Fewer schools, more hockey rinks! AND PACKERS!!!! WOOOO PACKERS!"

Giant Spider Invasion is one of my favorites.

Apparently Rifftrax isn't the only MST3k spinoff these days because Joel and the bots are back... sort of.

Cinematic Titanic

Joel Hodgons' upcoming riffing project with Trace Beaulieu, J. Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl to also be involved.

The next Rifftrax will be Transformers. Other than the fact that now I have to give more money to that piece of shit movie, my prayers have been answered.

Apparantly Volume 10 will be re-released as Volume 10.2 and Godzilla VS Megalon will be replace with The Giant Gila Monster. Since I already own volume 10, I'm glad Godzilla was replaced with an episode I don't care about, or I'd be PISSED that I had to rebuy the whole thing just for it.

MST3K: The Movie - The DVD re-release (updated)

By Erhardt

You-know-what may have finally frozen over. TVGuide.com is reporting that Universal will be re-releasing Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie on DVD on May 6th. While we haven’t received confirmation of this ourselves, this news comes from our old friend David Lambert, TVGuide.com Content Contributor and News Director of TVShowsOnDVD.com, so we’re pretty confident of its accuracy.

The new DVD will once again be a bare-bones release, with only the original theatrical trailer thrown in as an extra. But it’s reported that the movie itself will be a new anamorphic widescreen transfer with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. There will also be English subtitles. As always, we’ll post updates as we learn more.

This is shaping up to be an interesting year for MST3K fans!

Thanks once again to David Lambert for the heads-up.

Update: I questioned David about the DVD being released on May 8, which is a Thursday. He double-checked and verified that the actual date is May 6. Both this article and his original one have been corrected.

YES!! I'm glad I held off on plunking down a hundred dollars or two to get a copy.

I've been ignoring Rifftrax for awhile now it seems. When I first found it, it seemed so awesome, yet after watching several of them it seems like the jokes all run together... it's hard for me to describe, but it also seems like the style of jokes is the same for all the movies I've seen. They're mostly just the standard "comment on something in the movie"... there doesn't seem to be any of the actor-resemblance jokes, bombast jokes, character impersonation jokes (though to be fair a lot of those went out the window in MST with Trace's departure), references to other works the actors have been in, etc.

It's hard for me to describe, but it just seems like a lot of what made MST fun is sorely lacking in most of the Rifftrax. There's only a few Rifftrax I would watch a second time

I just watched Cinematic Titanic's first offering, The Oozing Skull. It's not great. Very few of the jokes elicit more than a snicker or a giggle. Five people riffing on it is way too much - Josh and Mary Jo are silent throughout about 90% of the film and really don't add much at all. The bits where they pause the film to do little skits are completely unfunny and are a poor substitute for host segments. It doesn't help that those bits are the only breaks between the riffing. There's no intro or outro to describe the concept or introduce the riffers - they just jump right into the movie.

It's worth pirating and watching once, but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

I've heard that criticism come up among several different reviewers... apparently the absence of Mike's writing skills makes for quite the noticable drop in quality

*bump!*

I ordered the standalone disc of The Giant Gila Monster from Rhino on February 12th, because I decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to buy Volume 10.2 just for one replacement disc.

So far, all I've gotten are two emails telling me the same thing: the DVD has "not yet arrived", but I've seen several copies of Volume 10.2 on the shelves at Best Buy or Barnes & Noble.

I'm starting to wonder if it really would've been easier to just buy that collection again just for one movie. I remember Rhino being pretty slow to respond to fan requests to replace The Killer Shrews from an earlier set after it became known that the original release was sent out with about 90 seconds of footage accidentally deleted from the show.

With that said, I wonder how Shout Factory would handle any situations like that, once they start releasing MST3K product...

My review of Cinematic Titanic (note: when I refer to The Film Crew guys, I'm referring to both their work on TFC and Rifftrax)

Much like the Joel-era of MST, the commentary is typically goofy, as opposed to the more sardonic Mike-era/TFC commentary, of which I prefer the latter. Unfortunately, the combination of the simple nature of many of the cracks, combined with a horrible delivery, causes the whole thing to feel flat. There were also long stretches of silence begging for commentary, as well as missed opportunities involving flubbed lines and poor editing. I got a few chuckles here and there from the feature, but I don't think I had a major laugh-out-loud moment once, and in fact I felt it was a chore to sit through this thing after the first ten minutes or so.

One thing I noticed is that it feels like they recorded the whole thing in one take, as it feels like there are several rushed lines throughout the film that should have been redone. In addition, there are quite a few lines in there which could have been good, but were poorly delivered by the riffers. Frank's voice and delivery in particular are not suited for riffing at all (though a viewing of Last of the Wild Horses had already shown that). Mary Jo, on the other hand, was surprisingly good with her cracks, even though she wasn't given many lines through the show. However, there is very little interaction and chemistry between any of the riffers... they're just five independent riffers, and there's minimal interaction between them as there is with the FC guys, though I will be fair in that this is their first release, while the FC guys have been working together for two years now.

As for the "sketches", well, first they leap right into the movie without any premise sketch in the first place. There are some sketches in the middle where they'll pause the film, but they're so bad that they take away from the experience rather than add to it.

One thing that's become evident to me from this production vs TFC, combined with their respective books, is that Mike and Kevin were the main providers of erudite/"deep" references during MST, as they're totally absent in this production. In general, the absence of Mike's writing skills are definitely noticable.

Essentially, I would recommend avoiding this one. It's just not good at all.

Although there's still a charm with MST that is absent in TFC, so it's not a perfect world

Maybe there's something about a guy and two robots with childlike wonder that just doesn't translate well into three middle aged men

One or two hundred dollars? What? I've got a copy on DVD sitting here on my DVD rack. It's really worth something?

A quick scan of Ebay shows the prices for it have dropped, I would assume due to the announcement that it's being re-released. Until the recent price drop it sold for quite the high price due to the lack of copies out there. I'm still kicking myself for not buying the copy I saw in a bargain bin in late 2000, because it was widescreen and I wanted a fullscreen version. Which of course doesn't exist.

Well damn. That's actually where I got it from. Bargain bin at a Best Buy for like $7.99. I'm kicking myself now. Still in pretty pristine condition too.

If you don't mind watching on a computer, Mr. B Natural is all over youtube along with almost all shorts I would assume.

I just downloaded my first Rifftrax- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Casino Royale.

Listening to the Potter track, I haven't laughed so hard in so long, the good thing about holding out on this is, there's so many I can still do.
