I don't like anime.

Recommended Posts

From what I've seen of Ramna, it's extremely stupid as well.

The manga is really good. The anime has a good first season, a good second and third season, and then everything after that is mostly terrible with a few good moments here and there. Really gimmicky, though.

I'd also recommend "Hellsing" if you're into occultish stuff. If you want some weird comedy try "Excel Saga" and "Fooly Cooly." I also recommend "Cowboy Bebop," just a five-star anime all-around.

"Neon Genesis Evangelion" is very good, but it's not for everybody. It combines giant robots, melodrama, some comedy, and strong religious overtones.

There's also two different endings. One is how the TV series ends. The other is End of Evangelion.

EoE came out because of viewer outcry, bitching, and death threats. So basically there is a segment of anime fans in Japan who are far more sad and disturbed than even the worst stereotypes of American anime fans. There are actually scans of some of the death threat letters that were sent to Gainex for split seconds in one of the (EoE?) montages.

Excel Saga is hilarious, though some of the jokes require knowledge about anime to get. Still, my favorite comedy anime series ever.

Luckily, they have the whole "culture notes" thing as one of the subtitles.

I'm pretty sure BOTH endings are valid. One is metaphysical and the other is more literal. But I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it.

I actually think Anno (the series' creator) would have done EoE even without all the aforementioned complaining and death threats. Although it probably would've taken longer to come out.

I thought...

The TV series was him giving in to Instrumentality, and EoE was him refusing to?

Regardless, I hate when an anime series ends with all sense breaking down and you not knowing what the hell is going on. That's one thing that ruined Outlaw Star's ending for me.

The whole issue is heavily debated. Many things that happen in Eva are debated.

The vibe I got from it was that one was a metaphysical ending (the TV version) and the other (the movie) was more literal.

I agree somewhat with you there. Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't. I didn't like how it happened with "The Big O," for example.

See also Video Girl Ai, which I loved up until the last episode.

Some recommendations from me:

Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X is mandatory if you remotely like Samurai themes. The first two OVAs (Trust & Betrayal) are awesome. Great animation, very dark atmosphere, bloody fights and a touching storyline.

Armitage III - if you like Blade Runner, you'll like this. Stay away from the Dual Matrix movie though, it sucks.

Blood The Last Vampire should be very interesting for IDRM, since it's very dark and bloody. It's only about 45 minutes long though and feels like a prequel to a bigger series.

The Castle of Cagliostro features the before mentoined Lupin III and is just a fantastic work. Hilarious and action-packed, one of my favourites.

Cowboy Bebop is, of course, awesome.

Ghost in the Shell should be seen by everyone who's remotely interested in anime. It's a bit complex, but very rewarding once you've seen it a couple of times. The TV Series (Stand Alone Complex) is getting released on DVD right now and is very good as well.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the greatest Anti War movies, period.

Ninja Scroll is a great, dark Ninja story. The animation style seems a bit dated now, but I still love it.

Perfect Blue is a very good mystery thriller. Filled with suspense and a great plot, highly recommended.

Princess Mononoke has been mentioned a couple of times.

Serial Experiments: Lain is a acquired taste. But if you like to think while watching TV now and then, check it out. Short description from dvdempire:

'There is the world around us, a world of people, tactile sensation, and culture. There is the wired world, inside the computer, of images, personalities, virtual experiences, and a culture all of its own. The day after a classmate commits suicide, Lain, a thirteen year-old girl, discovers how closely the two worlds are linked when she receives an e-mail from the dead girl: "I just abandoned my body. I still live here…" Has the line between the real world and the wired world begin to blur?'

Trigun owns.

Vampire Hunter D / Bloodlust owns, too.

Other anime series I heard good things about but haven't checked out yet:

Berserk, Hellsing, Last Exile (seen the first two episodes and it's great)

Well, thanks guys. I figured I'd get some conflicting viewpoints, but I think I've picked out a fair amount of stuff generally deemed worth watching.

I'll see how it goes.

Can you elaborate on this? I got Armitage III waiting to be watched. I'm in about 20 minutes.

Actually I have to disagree with all the Bebop and Kenshin love.

Besides the T&B OVA's you have one good series and two filler series. Even then its a pretty corny series. Don't even get me started on the reflection OVA.

Bebop has good visuals and a fantastic score, but lacking in just about every other department.

There are three different Armitage titles around. Armitage III, Armitage Poly-Matrix and Armitage Dual-Matrix.

Armitage III is the original OVA and I loved it. The Blade Runner-like atmosphere is captured very well and the characters and plot are great.

Armitage Poly-Matrix is basically a shortened movie version of the original OVA. It's good, but if you want the full story you should watch the OVA instead.

Armitage Dual-Matrix is the second movie and takes place a few years after the original story. The animation is BUTT-ugly, with some terrible looking CG effects ruining almost every scene. And the storyline and characters just aren't interesting. You can watch it once if you want to know what happens with the two main characters after the OVA, but it's really not good.

What about the characters and the great individual episodes? Spike, Jet, Ed and Faye are some of the best characters I've seen in anime. And most of the episodes are just great (especially Cowboy Funk, Toys in the Attic and Pierrot Le Fou)

A lot of people really like Tenchi and may recommend one of the versions (there are about a billion different takes on the exact same story, because the makers have no imagination) to you enthusiastically. These people are idiots.
Well, the Tenchi OVA(or is it OAV?) is one of MY favorites, if only for the story between Tenchi, Ryoko and Washu. Ryoko is one of my favorite anime characters ever due to her complexity. The other main characters can eat shit though. One-dimensional bitches. The other two versions of the show are, as you said, utter crap. More so the last one though. Shitty story and even shittier anmation. *leaves briefly to buy imports of the new OVA eps*

Anyway... Trigun is also a great anime, as are of course Cowboy Bebop and Vampire Hunter D. Witch Hunter Robin is decent too.

Berserk's hero is some one who has been referred to as the anime version of Evil Dead's Ash. However, there's plenty of raping, killing, demons and other sunshiney stuff like that in there.

What's that anime (I think it's just a movie or a really short series) with Gally the robot gal? It's pretty good, too. The name escapes me. I've heard Key the Metal Idol is good too, but I've never seen it.

Plastic Little--well, it's good if you want to see bared breasts and nubile young women groping each other in various states of undress, but other than that don't expect much. Ah, the gems you run across renting whatever anime your local rental place has in stock. ;) They also had a weird ass thing with some midget girl that featured a female nude fight scene. A lot of pervs apparently make anime (understatement, to be sure).

Bubble Gum Crisis and AD Police Files are more like Blade Runner than Armitage III.

The characters do not develop in any way by the end of the series. The only character that reaches any sort of revelation is Faye.

Has anyone seen Tokyo Godfathers yet? It's the new movie by Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress). I have it lying around and will probably watch it in the next couple of days.

I disagree. The only ones I can stand are Sasami (who is like 8 years old and is more intelligent and mature than most of them, seemingly around for the pedophiles to lust after) and Kiyone (a smart, reasonable girl who is driven insane and has all of her career opportunities blown by her stupid bimbo partner). Ryoko--bitch. Aika--bitch. Mihoshi--walking blond joke. That girl that didn't exist--bland. Washu--don't care one way or the other.

WHAT? HOW DARE YOU SAY AKIRA SUCKS..........the movie was was great for its time period the late 1980s.  The plot is basically about the govt doing experiments on young runaway/orphans along with various morals like you can't play god and anti-govt story.  Tetsuo the runt of his group of friends tries to fight the rival gang all by himself and gets himself in serious trouble which gives the govt an excuse to experiment on him.  Well to say that everything goes wrong is an understatement.  Tetsuo gets power hungry and gets back on everybody who were mean to him, be it gangs, his friends, etc...eventually Tetsuo becomes unstable is a threat to himself and the world, nothing could control the radical changes that the experients did to him.  If you like the FUCK THE GOVT plots then you will like this movie.

Well, then can we agree it sucks now? Because that's my point.

Yes, basically I understood that much. ^

Also, you left out the whole evolutionary message which probably is much more lucid in the manga but is just one or two vague sentences in the movie. The "ending" is a mindf*** and a neat visual, but that doesn't make the movie itself good or any less confusing. It's basically a poor adaption of something that probably was good.

TETSUUUUUO!!!!!

Well that was my 1st reaction in angry. Yes I know I left out a few things. As you said the whole issue about evolution and the fact that the govt did not learn its lesson the 1st time they failed with the experiments. The ending to me is the basic WTF anime finish similiar to a Dusty Finish in wrestling. Akira is still one of the greatest anime ever made.
