Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2004 You could always download it, nothing worse than buying something you will end up hating. I said I'd be renting them. And I don't usually go try finding them online, as I suck at trying to find stuff online.
Ced 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2004 I've seen HK discs reccomended here, but I'd avoid 'em at all costs. The discs themselves can range anywhere from decent to terrible, and that's not even starting with the subs.. Indeed. Bootlegs, which I lovingly call "Hong Kong Special Editions", are an extreme mixed bag. The video and audio transfers are usually decent quality, but you are in for a fun time if you can't understand Japanese and have to rely on subtitles. More often than not you will get poorly translated and mistimed subtitles on bootlegs. The bootleg I got for Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door not only had poor English translation, but the subtitles appeared a full ten seconds before its corresponding line was actually spoken. Because of my experience with them I hardly ever deal with bootlegs anymore. I now go through the more legal approaches of watching anime (rentals, fansubs for the non-commercially released titles, free TV, and occasionally buying the DVDs). I also recommend looking through the manga section of your local bookstore and skimming through some of the titles. With the exception of a few titles, the manga is the source material for the anime so you can get a feel for what to expect in the anime. Picking up a graphic novel here and there isn't a bad idea either.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2004 Consider another recommendation for Metropolis. My only complaints with it are relatively minor. There's a bit of clunky exposition to actually tell you just who and what Rock is. Maybe bad translation, but it came off as very unnatural. The movie just holds your hand through a lot the symbolism, which was obvious to begin with. Yes! I get it! Tower of Babel! Even atheists have heard of it! It leaves you with a few questions about the subplots--but nothing that ruins the enjoyment of the entire thing. Otherwise, awesome. Any opinions on M.D. Geist (I think that's it), Appleseed, or Vampire Princess?

Any opinions on M.D. Geist (I think that's it), Appleseed, or Vampire Princess? I've heard nothing but bad things about that anime. Which makes it rather perfect as the US Manga Corps mascot, as I don't think any other non hentai releasing company has translated so many bad OAVs. They also managaed to botch all of their big DVD releases the first time through(Lodoss, Slayers, and A-ko I heard all had problems) and they just re released Ayane's High kick, whihc is a guilty pleasur eof mine, admiteedly, but they added no features to ti. Just gave it a new cover and probably made it region 1(all of thei rold DVDs were region 0)
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 You mean M.D. Geist, right? Any idea about those others? Ayane's High Kick...eh, I liked it pretty much up until the ending so, she wins with pure luck after getting the snot beat out of her and getting that kick in? Bah. razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 I would say MD Geist is worthy of a rental since the dvd does include both of the videos on the disc. It is the typical shoot em up anime set in the future with the plot of the stranger comes to town to save everybody. If you can buy it for under $10 than do so. Appleseed is a police story again set in the future with robots/cyborgs as officiers. The city has a complicated computerized security system that gets hacked by some terrorist. So a big ass spider looking robot which looks just like the one in Wild Wild West movie goes on a rampage causing havoc. The 2 main characters are the police officers who are a woman and her robot partner who must go into city hall or something to turnoff the mainframe which was hacked. The movie is directed by some famous guy in anime who I believe directed Ghost in the Shell or Pat Labor but not sure. Appleseed is a hit or miss movie but is a must see rental. Buy it if you can it cheap. I have not see the Vampire Princess movie yet.

I should have said bootlegs in general. Problems with subtitles are really getting to be a thing of the past with most releases. You can goto sites like import-anime.com anyway which has hundreds of reviews of dvd's and collections so as you can see if there is problems before you buy. For me with dial up and the lack of many offically released series in region 2 [europe] meaning no rentals they are by far the best option unless you are rich. I learned a painfull lesson to my wallet a year or so back when I imported an offical Cowboy Bebop boxset from the US. I got hit by customs tax for the tune of £50 [about $90] so in all it cost me almost $250 at the end of the day. Now bear in mind I've bought bootleg perfect collections of the same show with DVD quality picture and sound, spot on subs and an english dub since for friends for $21 and $4 shipping. Where the seller will also mark the parcel gift and knock the stated price down so as no chance of being hit by customs. No choice for me its boots every time now. Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Well, I managed to watch the whole series of Love Hina. And... Um... Let's just say I managed without paying, ok? I gotta say, that while I enjoyed Love Hina thoroughly, I'm kinda depressed it ended after 24 episodes (there's actually 25, but only 24 were shown in Japan and the 25 isn't really counted) and only 3 OVAs. Could've been more done to spread it out. Oh well... That and I wanted more Matoko. Anyways, I bumped this because I'd like an opinion. I'm torn between two animes that I've decided on getting next: Inu Yasha Record of the Loddoss War Which one should I go for first? I know a lot of you suggest Beserk and Bastard and others ones, but for some reason, I'm continually finding myself going back to these two. So I'm going after these two first, then the ones suggested. However, I'm torn on which one first. RotLW is one because I did a whole thing on how Japanese Anime/Hentai are a respresentation of certain aspects of their Culture, or I think that's what the project was about. I did this for my first year of Japanese Language and Culture course in grade 10, and that's now four-five years removed, so please excuse if I'm wrong. RotLW was the anime that I had selected for the presentation. That and I'm a junkie for all things fantasy. Inu Yasha is the other one because for some reason or another, the more I watch on YTV, the more I delve into the series, the more I wish to watch it. It also is fantasy, so that's a plus. Problem is that it is 170 episodes, so that's like a lot of anime watching I'd have to do... Not that I mind, as I watched all of Love Hina, I'm just saying lots of watching would need to be done. So can you help this baka out? Which should I get to first?
Insane Bump Machine 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Lightning Flik, you have to watch the Love Hina Christmas Special for the real ending of the series. It's a great final episode. Oh, and avoid Love Hina Again at all costs.

Oh, and avoid Love Hina Again at all costs. When I said all, I meant all. So I didn't avoid Love Hina Again. Wasn't bad actually. I liked it. Just didn't like the introduction of Koneko when they did. She should've been introduced sooner to make it seem more natural progression. But then again, still wondering whether I should get Inu Yasha or RotLW now that I'm done...
El Psycho Diablo 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Get Lodoss. For one, Inuyasha is one hell of an investiment, being well over 130+ episodes by now, and with a terrible disc release rate (3 eps a disc? Ppbht.). The Lodoss OVA is only 13 eps, and should be fairly cheap. (Make sure you get the newer version, as it's got remastered video.) If anyone dosen't visit this site already, do so. AlwaysPissedOff 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 I like both series, but Inuyasha can get pretty tiresome after Naraku's introduced into the story(which is relatively early on) and the fact that HE'S STILL ALIVE really grates on my nerves. They either need to find a new villian or end the damend series at some point because it's getting really DBZ-ish with all the filler crap and meaningless stalling. So, I say go with Records(even if Parn's a bit of a bitch early on and Spark won't shut the hell up at times).
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Alright. As soon as I can get a chance, I'll go ... um ... "get" Record of the Loddoss War easily... Well, as easily as easy can be. Depends on how long he's kicking around for APO. I don't mind enemies sticking around as long as they continue the progression. On YTV they are only around at the point that Naraku helped Shishomaru (hopefully, my romaji isn't half bad there) and so I'm not that far off. But yeah, I saw that in reality, there'd be 170 episodes that I'd have to get and that's a lot of anime. Since though, everyone's saying RotLW I'm going with that. Internet Warfare 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2004 Ayane's High Kick- I've only seen the first tape which had like 3-4 episodes. It's good and the only wrestling related anime I've seen. Love Hina- I had trouble getting into it at first but after vol. 5 or so I really liked it. It's a nice comedy/ love story. The episodes are done nicely and I recommend them the most next to... Chobits. Another great anime. This one is about a guy whose having trouble in junior college and working a scummy job. (he gets free porno from his boss though) When he's walking home he see's a robot type lady which is called a Persacom. This deals with the persacom becoming more and more like a human. Its really good.

Meh--to me, the moral is "sometimes people succeed just by being lucky." I'd like to recommend Case Closed, a.k.a. Detective Conan. It's on Cartoon Network on weekday nights, betwen Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Cowboy Bebop I believe--anime crime drama series. However, I'm wondering when they're going to get back to the syndicate from the start of the series. Also, from what I've heard of the original intro theme, and the closing theme, those lyrics are *really* stupid. If either Box Torrents comes back online, or if I go to BAKA (a local con held in Edmonton at the University of Alberta) I'll definitely see if I can get it. SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2004 I don't care what anyone says, the original Tenchi Muyo! series rules. Tenchi Universe is quite tedious at times, but has it's moments, and Tenchi In Tokyo is a series that grows on you. Even Tenchi GXP isn't too bad. As for movies... Akira deserves to be seen, at least for it's artwork (I still hate the ending). Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are both classics in their own right, and I would recomend seeking out the Galaxy Express 999.
