I downloaded an Azumanga Daioh episode, and it looks like it'd be easy to get into without seeing all the episodes in it. So if that's why you don't want series' then you could still give A.D. a look.

I've got the entire series bootlegged. Honestly, the only Love Hina anime episode I like and go back to watch is the Christmas special. It has less of the fanservice and comedic violence and it's slightly more plot driven compared to the episodes. I can't recollect anything real memorable from the TV series, the spring special is there for fanservice...and then there's the LH Again episodes...

Did anybody mention the Guyver...yeah I know...no series but it was so short you could call it a movie..but the Guyver anime is very good...and whoever made this post should give some of the anime series a try...Eva is probably the best story I've ever seen and the emotion involved in that show is off the charts...also Blue Gender was awesome once it started rolling ...the fact that the creators of that show were able to take such off the wall premises and make them into emotional and captivating stories solidaified my love for anime..oh and don't limit yourself to Cartoon Network..it's fun to watch sometimes but I need unedited goodness

So, Lova Hina does suck. Thought so.

 

Incidentally, I was at the rental place again, noticing what I rented before. Kotetsu was that stupid dubbed thing with the nude fight scene. Avoid that one unless you just want the fanservice.

 

Another I recall seeing was Devil Hunter Yohko. It's...well...eeeeeeeehkay. Basically, it wasn't terrible like I expected it to be. It's kinda-sorta a parody of your typical magical girl anime, with sexual humor thrown and slapsticky stuff. I don't know if I'd go out of my way to acquire the series, but I'd watch it for free maybe.

Just to my 5 cents in: DBZ and Inuyasha are two of the most repetitive series I've ever seen. Hell, Inu is up to like 120 or more and they're STILL trying to kill Naraku.

 

Also, avoid Tenchi In Tokyo like the plague. The first two series were eons better.

 

Wolf's Rain comes off too Witch Hunter Robin-ish to me. Too damned slow and I'll probably lose interest unless something interesting happens within the next couple of weeks.

 

Out of the Gundam series, I still don't see how there are Wing fans around. I despise that show with a passion and that other AU, 0080.

If dated animation isn't a problem for you, Zeta Gundam (coming later this year) is one of the best (if not -the- best) UC Gundam series I've seen yet.

I enjoyed the manga. I only have the first volume of the DVD and I didn't enjoy it as much as the source material.

 

But yes, some parts are very repetitive and there is a lot of female-on-male violence.

Not just anime but RPGs (SquareEnix, I'm looking at you). You have to connect with your target audience somehow.

Well, in Square's earlier RPGs the age of the characters were rather ambiguous. Usually they'd get the SD look but that didn't mean anything as far as age.

 

However, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, etc seemed be some of the earliest titles fitting that description.

 

(Although you can get around that at least in CT. Frog and Magus're probably in their 20s at least, and Robo could be anywhere from 300-700 years old, technically. You can beat the game with them! )

 

Then there's Zelda--he's a freakin' little kid except for when becomes a...teenager in Ocarina of Time.

 

Well, there are plenty of exceptions in anime/manga and RPGs, but it happens a lot.

I'd suggest you go on ebay or one of the numerous websites and pick up the series bootlegs. They are like a tenth of the normal price and if you like what you see you can go and buy the originals.

 

I am a fan of Anime but I tend to stay clear of the comedy and hentai stuff. Both tend to drag the genre down in my eyes.

 

For the occult stuff get Hellsing, Berserk and Vampire Hunter - bloodlust. All great fun.

 

Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are must haves.

 

Evangelion is worth a look. I myself hated most of it but theres enough people who love it to make it worth trying.

 

Get Macross Plus and Vision of Escaflowne. Both well made with interesting plots and tight action.

 

 

Oh yeah Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Grave of the Fireflies and everything ever done by Miyasaki for your anime film choice.

I've seldom watched a lot of anime besides what was on Free TV, because I'm one poor bastard. So basically, I got alot of the "meh" stuff. At least the dummy down versions they put on TV.

 

Anyways, long story short, I want to know everyone's opinion on where I should start in watching/getting animes. As I've lately wanted so see them.

 

Recently rented Love Hina and I was quite happy with the rentals, I don't get the dislike, but I like demented humor. Considering I just rented one, then the whole bunch that was there (gotta love having a ton of freebies ). Probably the whole series will be my first pick up for a buy.

 

Anyways, point being. When I got a choice to make for my next rental, for when I go back here soon.

A) Bastard

B) Beserk

C) Dragonball GT

D) Kiddy Krade

Unless you're already a fan of Dragon Ball and DragonBall Z I wouldn't recommend DBGT. Most people don't even consider it true DB "canon". The series is mostly aimed to be funny, although some of the final battles are terrific. I'm the biggest DBZ fan, but I wouldn't recommend the series to non-fans.

 

Regarding the others mentioned, I've heard great things about Berserk from a cousin of mine, although I've never seen it. The others I cannot comment.

Berserk- Pretty crap animation but a good (if not somewhat disturbing) series with an awesome intro/outro track to boot. Very dark and graphic feel overall so that might put you off depending on your taste. Character development is also very good.

 

Note: You will be cursing the fact that the series ends just as the actual tale of the black swordsman begins. You would have to read the manga to find out what happens next (its twice as fucked up as the anime)

On Love Hina: I like the manga. The anime isn't especially horrible and can be good as a waste of time, but it's nothing overly special.

Its some grimey, nasty, hardcore shit that makes you start to like the main characters then starts fucking with them [and you] big style.

Its really great though and if your man [or woman ??] enough then get that. It's alot better than any of your other picks.

I watched the recommened Samuri X OAVs (I'm not sure if those are the correct initials, and I'm too lazy to check). I always dug samuri stuff, so that was a natural. I liked them.

 

I watched one which was recommened by a friend of mine, X. I've seen several X things around, this was, I think, the first movie. I loved it visually, but I don't think I was in the right mood and didn't really understand what was going on. I should probably watch it again.

 

I watched Vampire Hunter D. It was probably the one I liked the best so far. The whole thing with his hand, it was too cool.

 

I had seen Akira before, but after developing a bit more of a taste, I watched it again. The thing about it being way too compressed, I could see that. It felt like things were left out. I've read the Battle Royale manga and liked it, so I never had a particular aversion to manga. I might give reading Akira a shot.

 

Next on my list is now Berserk, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell, and Spirited Away which I actually saw at Walmart.

X is... to put it lightly, strange. It was very well-drawn and all, but it has absolutely no connection to the TV series that it was supposedly based on(Tokyo Babylon) and the whole "everybody dies except for the main character" ending pisses me off to no end. I'd recommend TB, but it's so mediocre that you'd probably get bored half-way through it.

yeah download them if your unsure. My comp is to slow but one of my friends uses bit torrent and things like that and gets everything including all the latest stuff. Naruto would be worth a look too you as it would be easy to find as its the big thing at the moment on the download scene. Its pretty frigging good too.

 

 

Berserk its also awesome but a warning its not for the feint hearted and the ending with no spoilers here is a let down. I think they expected a second series but it is carried on in the Manga.

 

 

IDrinkRatsMilk if you liked Vampire Hunter D I'd expect you'll love Hellsing too. Its more cool mutha-fuckas kicking the shit out of the undead in ultra cool ways.

I've seen HK discs reccomended here, but I'd avoid 'em at all costs.

 

The discs themselves can range anywhere from decent to terrible, and that's not even starting with the subs..

 

I'd download, myself..but you can get discs reasonably at Deep Discount DVD.
