Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 16, 2004 When you get around to it though, can we start discussing the win loss record of Achilles against the other heroes?
Guest Nanks Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Well Troy didn't really have many heroes, so I guess the only one you see him defeat is Hector. There's also Little Ajax, but they left him out of the movie so as not to confuse the audience as Great Ajax was featured fighting for the Greeks.
Guest The Midnight Rocking Warrior Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Ok....... I gotta learn how to correctly do the spoiler tags. I liked Achilles, but I could relate more to Hector, as strange as that sounds. I did like the fight scenes in the movie, though
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Just got out of the theatre for this about an hour ago. Excellent movie. I found nothing wrong with it. If you are a big time Greek Mythology buff, you will be angered by the Hollywood treatment of Homer's tale, but this was still a good movie. When it ended, the theatre broke out in universal applause. Unlike Van Helsing, which broke out in sarcastic snickering and criticism moments after it ended. Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 The only real reactions that I heard from the audience were laughter and snickering following the Catwoman trailer, but audiences up here are notoriously quiet for anything besides hockey. It was a good movie, certainly better than Van Helsing, but not really the classic I was looking for. There is one gigantic flaw in this film that nearly brings it down. That being the insistance to make the cowardly cocksucker Paris out to be the good guy. I ended up absolutely hating him, when the movie wants me to feel sorry for him. I actually felt more for Meneleaus. On the good side, two characters steal this movie. Eric Bana's Hector and Sean Bean's Odysseus are the only characters who really seem to have an understanding of how the world works. They are the voices of reason surrounded by egotistical morons on both sides (Achilles & Agamemnon for the Greeks, Paris & Priam for the Trojans). The other good character is Achilles' second-in-command who puts up with his bullshit and remains loyal out of respect.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 I thought it was a great movie and I pretty much disagree with EVERY criticism I've read of it.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Gotta agree with Kahran on the Paris bit. Although my audience applauded after the movie was over, it was more because they saw a good movie as opposed to what Paris did at the end. I got the feeling no one liked him. One thing that hurts Paris character in this movie is the abscence of the gods. They push quite a bit of the action, Paris's action in particular. Still, he sucks. While I did think Achilles was egotistical, I didn't find him to be a moron. The only thing that stuck in my craw about the movie was Pitt's turn as Achilles. It wasn't a terrible performance or anything, but it came off very James Dean-ish, rebel witout a cause more so than just a badass, angry fuck like I thought he'd be more like. dubq 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Great movie. Eric Bana & Brad Pitt did better jobs than I ever expected out of them, and of course Brian Cox & Brendan Gleeson were fucking awesome! Two slights against it, though. Orlando Bloom can't act & they made it look as if the war only lasted for a few days. Other than that, it was great.

Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted May 17, 2004 So is every summer movie this year judged on the Van Helsing scale? Excellent Movie: Infinitely better than VH Very Good Movie: SOOOOOO much better than VH Good Movie: A lot better than VH Bad Movie: Better than VH VH: VH. ? I doubt it, and hope not. I think it's just because for most people, Van Helsing was the last big "blockbuster" movie they saw... but, it doesn't take much to be better than Van Helsing, so I don't really get it either. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 I saw the movie yesterday and liked it a lot. It wasn't quite ROTK level good but it was excellent. Pitt was ok but Achilles is sort of a hard role to play and I couldn't really think of too many ideal choices for him (Russell Crowe maybe?). My dad and I both agreed that Peter O'Toole stole the movie big time with his scene with Achilles in the tent. There was one part of it where I laughed my ass off. It was when Paris and Helen were discussing their plans and Paris was like "We can run away together and live off the land....I will hunt rabbits and deer." There was just something hysterical about that line. Was anyone else amused by it?
LJSexay 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 I thought that line was hilarious. As was Orlando Bloom getting the shit kicked out of him. I loved the movie. I'm not gonna make any apologies for it either. It did exactly what it was supposed to do: take an epic story and condense it enough for the dumb general audience to accept it. It may have been slightly off historically, but what movie based on a book DOESN'T do that???? Jesus. I think all the performances were great. In all honesty too . Yes even Bloom... he made me wants to gut him even more than I already do . Like someone said before, this movie was based off the Iliad, which was NOT the whole 10 year telling of the battle at Troy. It was a summary of sorts, which it did a fine job of. By the way, did any mythology buffs like myself laugh whenever it was hinted that more was to come from Odysseus? "I don't care about missing the beginning, as long as I'm here til the end." hahaha. I loved that. Great movie.

Der Kommissar 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 I just saw it. I really didn't like it. I did enjoy the character of Hector, but, otherwise, the movie just felt rushed to me. Like when Achilles and Hector met, it felt like a fairly short fight. I felt that should have been a fairly big deal, as opposed to just another part of the film. To their credit, they tried to build it as such before the battle, but the battle just came off as extremely anticlimatic to me. It was trying to condense a bunch of different subplots into a movie, and I felt they just did not do a lot of them justice. Not to mention the fact they did a rather liberal interpretation of the book itself, which, certainly didn't endear the story to me at all. Ignoring the fact that they changed a lot of the history of the story, I felt the movie was kind of average. Other than Hector and Achilles, the characters mostly came off as rather shallow or totally irritating(Paris.) Even with Achilles, they never really explained what his motivations were, like why was he so obsessed with being remembered? I will give a 5 out of 10. I liked certain parts of the movie, but the parts I disliked about the movie really dragged it down for me.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Well, earlier it was stated that the whole thing with Achilles's heel was never delved into. That would be a minor quibble I had. The audience was just supposed to know the backstory of Achilles, which I guess is having respect for the viewer (either that or laziness). 30 seconds of conversation could have solved that though: "Yeah, the dude was dipped in the river aside from his heel...." I too would like to see Sean Bean in The Odyssey sequel. It's interesting how we'd be expected to make a 180 turn though, rooting him on to kill off his wife's suitors while in Troy we were expected to condone a guy for stealing someone's wife. Or maybe not condone but go along with it for the sake of the plot.
LJSexay 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 If referring to Paris, I don't know if we were supposed to condone it... cuz personally, I thought he was an idiot, no matter how ungodly hot Helen was.
Guest The Midnight Rocking Warrior Report post Posted May 17, 2004 I thought Bana, Bean, and O'toole had the best performances. And I wanted to kick Paris' ass throughout the movie as well. After his fight with Gleeson, I turned to my brother and said " If I ever do that when I'm fighting someone, don't help me....... kill me."

Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 18, 2004 That comment was a reference towards TMRW's tendency to start threads like that in the Comic Book/Literature folder. I guess that joke went over a few heads. I kind of want to see this movie, but I have a feeling it would be a waste of $9.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Well go to the daytime showing instead of the evening.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted May 18, 2004 I give it **3/4 out of 4. THey should have included a little of the greek mythology to it and it wouldn't have been too hard to do leap forwards to show how long the war lasted.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 If anything just watch the movie for the fight scenes. Achilles vs Hector was one of my favorite fight scenes ever........especially the jumping sword attack by Achilles.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 18, 2004 How much of the movie is fighting?
razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 There are maybe 3 duels and several full on battles of the armies as seen in Mel Gibson epics. What I liked about this movie's fight scenes is that they used Greek battle formations such as 20 soldiers getting close together forming a "turtle shell" with the shields and the Trojans front line pushing the enemy back with its brute strength of shield strategy. Then in the Achilles vs Hector duel, Brad Pitt used some sweet movies with the spear & shield.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Achilles/Hector is one of the best duels I have seen in a long time.
Guest Nanks Report post Posted May 18, 2004 I can't believe the good responses to Bana's performance. I still just can't see it, but it's super-exciting that's he's doing well for himself. It'd be so hilarious if he won some supporting actor gongs or something.
Guest croweater Report post Posted May 18, 2004 I'm in Nank's boat. I can't look past Eric Banna as anything but a funny bastard. However, being one of the most likeable personalities ever I will go and see this movie to support him. When Chopper cam out I really didn't expect it to launch his career this far. Kardo 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 Every time I see Eric Bana I just think of his Ray Martin impression and think of the fact he started on a pretty dodgy sketch show. To go from Full Frontal to major motion pictures is just amazing.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2004 The odd thing is that I can't see him as a comic, since I've never seen any of his Australian comedy work. I doubt he gets nominated for best supporting though....that's Peter O'Toole's category and he's way more deserving.
