(CNN) -- Tony Randall, the Emmy-winning actor who made the role of fussy neatnik Felix Unger his own in TV's "The Odd Couple," has died. Randall was 84.

The actor died in his sleep Monday evening at NYU Medical Center in New York, according to a statement from his publicist. The cause of death was "complications from a prolonged illness," the statement said.

Randall starred in a number of movies -- he performed in the Rock Hudson-Doris Day films "Pillow Talk" (1959), "Lover Come Back" (1961) and "Send Me No Flowers (1964) as well as the Jayne Mansfield comedy "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" (1957) -- but he was probably best known for his television roles.

Besides "The Odd Couple," his series included "Mr. Peepers," "The Tony Randall Show" and "Love, Sidney" -- the latter the first show featuring an openly gay lead character.

Randall, an expert raconteur, was also a frequent guest on "The Tonight Show."

The actor was born Leonard Rosenberg in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on February 26, 1920

This really does suck. Just seems like not too long ago everyone talked about how virile he was to have kids in his 70s.

The odd part of this obit to me was the whole part about him being most famous for the Odd Couple. When I think Tony Randall I first think of him in the Hudson/Day movies as Hudson's best friend and sometimes incompetent boss. God he was hilarious in those movies.

He was the man.

I love the comedy central commercials a few years ago where he's sitting on a stool with his arms crossed and an aaaaaangry look on his face... followed by someone saying something like 'Tony Randall was supposed to provide the voice over for this commercial, but someone forgot his favorite doughnut" or something like that

I always liked the Odd Couple TV series, even though it was'nt the same guys from the movie.

Why is it the good always die so young?!

In reality though the thing that angers me is he decided to father a child a few years back. That kid will grow up never truly being able to know his father and I doubt they did many activities together with Randall's age. You shouldn't be fathering children when you could be a great grand parent.

Well that's two in the last week and a half. Randall and Alan King... who is next?

My guess is Brando. He really can't have much left in him. Hopefully its not James Earl Jones though as he's getting up there in age as well.

Bah. He probably left behind more money than all of us here at TSM combined.

Oh, yeah. Peace out Tony...
