CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 Got my B.Math. (Statistics) in 1997. How are you with probability? I've essentially had to take a crash course in it to prepare for the first actuarial exam... Pretty good...I was looking over the material for the actuarial exams when I was deciding whether to take them or not, and I've got most of that covered, although I'd need to brush up on it. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 That's a link to my stuff KKK. And yes I know I need a lot of work. Bah. That's what the copy editor is for. ..... Not sure if that was meant for me, but it was always funny hearing students next to me talk about how much they love to write and want to be journalists, then when called on by the prof to give their opinion on a current event they would say, "oh, I don't follow the news." The profs feared calling on me.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2006 Hey KKK I've kind of learned you can't judge yourself on how heavily your stories are edited b/c every editor is different. Is that true? Because I'll write something for my editor and he will pretty much run it as is but another editor will take it to the cleaners. Like I wrote a story about recruiting for the campus desk and my editor loved it but the assistant managing editor took it apart. The scariest part was when he said "I barely edited your story compared to some of the people on campus desk."

I'm doing fine with basic prob, conditional prob and combinatorial prob... the problem is remembering all the different distributions and their respective parameters (mean, median, pdf, cdf and mgf)
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2006 Hey KKK I've kind of learned you can't judge yourself on how heavily your stories are edited b/c every editor is different. Is that true? Pretty much so, unless of course you suck as a writer. I'll write something for my editor and he will pretty much run it as is but another editor will take it to the cleaners. Yeah. Many times it just depends on the editor's style or preference. Other times they just might not like you. For example, when I worked as a copy editor at a weather service agency, the bitch I had to work with would ALWAYS change things I'd consider to be "OK." However, when I would make changes to her material, she would go apeshit. The only times I would change her stuff was when it was in direct "violation" of the AP book. For example, AP style tells you never to use "towards" but instead use "toward." One time I had the nerve to make this change and she threw a fucking fit. And the reason she hated me? Because I replaced someone who replaced someone she liked. Yes, that was the reason. Currently I produce our organization's montly publication, and despite being constantly told by my readership that this publication under my direction has been the best it has ever been, my one dickhead boss always makes it seem that I'm one mistake away from losing my job (He did my job for years before getting a promotion, and then the guy I replaced was on the job for seven years). The last issue I did he threw a fit about how I had the bylines and went on to say how horrible they were and needed to be redone. I think the reason he did this was to because he wanted "payback" regarding a different incident that took place between us before that (basically I had worked for 1-2 months on a project and sent it out without letting him take all the credit for it). I then presented to him more than seven examples of "inconsistent" by-lines (bolded, unbolded, different font sizes, etc.) that were in an issue back in 2003 (before I started working at this place) which were in the span of just several pages. That shut him up (for about two days).
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2006 I'm doing fine with basic prob, conditional prob and combinatorial prob... the problem is remembering all the different distributions and their respective parameters (mean, median, pdf, cdf and mgf) Yeah, that stuff's killer. I was never able to remember much of that. It explains the 65 I got in Mathematical Statistics, where I needed to remember it all for exams (and the 85 in Advanced Probability, where I didn't). I hate the CP book (The Canadian equivalent of the AP book) There's so much random stupid stuff in there that we have to know, or else we might fail our articles. The Sun is pretty nice about changing my articles. For the most part, they don't do much, and most of their changes are justified. My one issue with them is having to come up with a cute jazzy headline for every story. That gets tiring, especially when you have to write about squash and women's hockey like I hav. SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2006 Currently at the tail end of getting an associates in Education/Special Education. I've continued to do volunteer work as a teachers assistant despite my work study course ending a month ago, and I may be getting a job as an assitant there soon. God damn it. How many of us are there on this board, anyway?
Ace309 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2006 I have a BA in Political Science (American Politics & Public Affairs concentration) and Philosophy. It was a double major that I finished accidentally when the scheduling during my last semester happened to work out so that I could upgrade my PoliSci minor to a full major with a minimum of fuss. I'm currently pursuing a Juris Doctor (law degree). Depending on scheduling, I'm hoping for a Litigation concentration. At some point, if the funding's there and depending on where I am, I'd like to either go back to my undergrad school for an LLM (Master of Laws) in criminal practice or go to one of the various places where I can get a Master of Public Administration. I can't help it. I'm a public affairs geek.
