Diesel over Bret Hart

Diesel beat Bob Baclund for the title.

He beat Bret by DQ at KOTR 94 when he was IC champ and Bret was World Champ, then they had a no-contest at the 95 Rumble before Bret beat him at the 95 Survivors.

I think someone mentioned Angle over Rock. I'd have to disagree with that. Even though I was still a mark at heart, I knew he was getting the title sooner rather than later. I was actually cheering for him to win.

here's a few ones from WCW.

Fit Finley winning the Television Title shocked the hell out of me.

Psychosis winning the Cruiserweight Title in April 99 was a big surprise.

Chris Jericho winning the WCW Cruiserweight Title the 1st time was unexpected because Jericho was basically a JTTS and Syxx was Feuding with Ric Flair.

Yes, I mistyped that.

Sting to Macho Man in 1998. That was really stupid.

Are you referring to Macho Man beating Sting for the WCW Title at Spring Stampede 98?

ETA: Benoit lost to Rikishi in the KOTR by DQ, right?

Yeah, he lost to him by DQ, because Benoit hit him with a chair.

The night after Starrcade 97 I was surpised to see Booker T (who was quietly getting a push with victories over Jeff Jarrett on his way out) and Ultimo Dragon both win singles titles.

Dragon SQUASHED Guerrero big time, after Eddie convincingly won a match against Malenko the night before at a *huge* PPV.

Booker over Disco not as big, just the whole Booker singles push was new.

That match was supposed to go about 10 minutes but because they were running out of time they cut it down to about a minute if I remember correctly.

The biggest upset I remember was the night after In Your House III when Yokozuna & Owen Hart lost the tag team belts to the Smoking Gunns. You might say it wasn't much of an upset since the Gunns were about the only good team in the tag division after the Allied Powers fell off the map as challengers but c'mon the Gunns had lost on numerous occassions to Yoko & Owen. It just appeared to me that no one aside from a super team was going to take them down so it was shocking when they lost the belts.

I didn't really think Yoko/Owen were unstoppable. Owen always showed a weakness that he could lose anytime. It was Yokozuna who was hard to beat in that time frame...by pinfall that is.

IIRC, at the Raw Bowl, in a funny as hell moment, Yoko accidentally banzai dropped Owen when Bart pulled Billy from under neath and tripped up Owen on the way out.

How about ric flairs 2nd wwf title win? You'd have to think that their rematch would've made it to ppv, possibly at survivor series 92. but one weekend I turn on superstars and see that flair has beaten savage at a non televised event, but they showed some footage. btw did that match ever make it to a coliseum video of any kind?

for me personally

WWF

Bret Hart's 1st: really shocking as flair had just regained the title and was busy feuding with savage and warrior. but on a sat afternoon, I turn on my tv to see that bret (prob my fav wrestler at the time) had won the world title. wow

another one has to be barry windham beating steve austin for the tv title in a 2/3 falls match on wcw sat night. It was totally unexpected by me at least

sting losing the wcw title to vader at GAB 92 is another one. I mean Sting had only had the belt for like 4 months abd the way they built the match up youd think that sting would get a close win over the monster (cuz thats the way the wwf used to do that), and as a mark I thought he could pull the upset but then again I had been used to vince mcmahons booking . and the match itself? brutal. Vader basically squashed sting for 16 or 17 mins and I'll never forget the crowd as they (and I) slowly realized that sting was a dead man walking.

7-6-98

goldberg winning the wcw title was insane. For weeks on the net there was a rumor of a hogan/goldberg match on that nitro, but off air (since it was gbs home and we thought theyd save the real match for ppv, which they probably should have). that day I went to disneyland and didnt get home tilll late, but I had set the timer on the vcr to record both nitro and raw (this was before tnt went to two seperate feeds for the east and west coast and I could see nitro live at 5 and raw at 9. But I got home to realize I had accidentally set the timer to record tnt for only 2 hours, forgeting that nitro had recently switched to 3 hours long. man was I angry, I had to go online to find out and I was shocked. I still have that tape and wish I had the whole show on it. I did get the full raw and if anyone recalls it was a taped raw where DX impersonated the nation and undertaker dressed up as kane to win the number one contenders spot for sumerslam.

Mikey Whipwreck beating the Sandman for the ECW title. That was such a good program.

definitely...NO ONE saw that coming...course you could say that of all of Mikey's title wins.

here's a few more unexpexted ECW title wins:

World:

Bam Bam def. Douglas--When Rick Rude told Douglas he had a surprise challenger for him...surprise, SURPRISE!

Taz def. Awesome-- no one expected Taz back so soon.

Dreamer def. Taz; Credible def. Dreamer--good angle for what it was, altho no one really wanted to see Credible as champion.

Sandman def. Credible and Corino; Rhyno def. Sandman-- Sandman wins his 4th (5th if you count his "Eastern-CW" reign) World title and promptly loses it to Rhyno. again, good for what it was.

Tag Team:

Cactus and Mikey def. PE-- Cactus didn't have a partner and no one thought he'd choose Mikey...not even MIKEY!

FBI def. New Jack and John Kronus-- yeah, they had help from the Dudleyz, but they held the belts for a while.

Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon def. FBI-- harly anyone really knew who Furnas and Lafon even WERE, not to mention they won them at a house show.

Raven and Tommy Dreamer def. Dudleyz-- Raven's shocking return to ECW, and to help his arch-enemy...completely out of left-field.

TV:

Rob Van Dam def. Bam Bam-- i know i didn't see it coming, since they were supposedly pushing for a Sabu-Bam Bam title match at the PPV.

Kid Kash def. Rhyno--do i even NEED to put a reason as to why this was unexpected?

I also remember Marc Mero beating Faarooq in the finals of the 1996 Intercontinental Title Tournament that was held on an episode of Monday Night Raw. I totally expected Faarooq to win the match and take the belt (since he was supposed to win it from Ahmed at SummerSlam) but I was completely taken by surprise when Mero hit his finisher and took the title.

.Mankind over the Rock for the World Title on Raw was unexpected.

Umm....yeah. Such a shocker! Even though it was announced on Nitro three hours earlier! now granted, just the thought of Mick getting the strap on him was unthinkable to most at first, I'm sure many felt that the Mankind had evolved into so much more than just a fued for taker. I wouldn't really say surpised because it was fitting for the time. Not to mention the now infamous Monday night war fuck up on Bischoff's part

Jericho becoming the first undisputed definately! Not that I think he didn't have what it takes to go over the other two ( because he did and STILL does IMO) but I honestly dont think anyone expected Jericho to get the honor.

Yeah, but when that spoiler came out on Wednesday morning, the general consensus was "Holy shit!"

No but it was shown in full on Prime Time ... since it took place at a TV taping.

Yup....your right....I stand corrected

Micheal Cole was right on one thing. The least likely champion , but perhaps the most deserving.
