art_vandelay 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights I don't expect any of you to go out and get it, but if you already have it, you'll know what I mean. Death From Above - Heads Up Quite possibly the greatest Canadian musical export. Drums and bass. Thats all it is, but its sheer power makes it seem like a 5 piece. They'll be dropping their first full length major label album in August so that everyone from Timbucktoo to Iceland can check it out. I saw them open for Billy Talent in January and have been a fan ever since. They are going to be HUGE (within indie circles at least). Lots of buzz about these two. To elaborate: They are quite frankly one of the handful of modern artists I listen to. With a mere 6 song 14 min. EP they have completely captured my soul and made their their love kitten. Fuck I love them. Its weird, i saw them through Billy Talent last Sept...a show I was adament about not attending. Boy am I glad I did.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2004 Sugar - File Under: Easy Listening (1994) Second and final album from former Hüsker Dü member Bob Mould's second most famous band, this CD is filled with Mould's distinct buzzsaw guitar sound, wrapped around some gorgeous melodies and pop hooks. Check out the insanely catchy "Your Favorite Thing" and get rocked by "Gee Angel" for proof of that this band should've been all over "alternative" radio in 1994. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 "Specialist" is incredible. Sometimes I wish it had been on the album, but I kind of like it as a lost little treasure. Great, great album. With about a year-and-a-half of distance on 2002, it's definitely held up as my favorite from that year, even outshining Wilco and Trail of Dead.
Anorak 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 Uncle Tupelo - March 16-20 1992 Alt country can sometimes be a dreary genre but more often than not it produces music which can be passionate and timeless, inspired by tradition and offering new interpretations of it at the same time. One of the best examples is this album. Roughly made up of 50% originals and 50% traditional covers it fits together perfectly as one of the definitive modern albums of...whatever alt country's being called this week. Their version of Moonshiner is enough to give you goosebumps and songs like Fatal Wound are spare and beautiful, not a note or lyric is wasted or played anything less than perfectly. This was the first Uncle Tupelo album I bought and its bare, traditional sound was something I hadn't been exposed to before, its probably been responsible for opening up a whole different type of music to me and that's not a bad extra bonus to get with one of the best albums by one of the key bands of the 90's. Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 To all the Interpol heads: Do any of you know what the deal with the track "Song Seven" is? It's not on TOTBL and it's not on The Black Sessions, nor have I heard any rumours that it's on the new album. I know that Interpol did a few songs for a comp cd of New York artists so that's maybe where it's from.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2004 The 'Precipitate' EP Their first official release, which was really limited. Pressed in 2001, I think. "Precipitate" and "A Time To Be So Small" first appeared on there, too.

PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2004 I do keep meaning to get Fun House. On the Alt. Country theme, Frank Black's solo work in this area is always underrated and at times fantastic, especially on Dog In The Sand and on most of Black Letter Days. And his live shows were always awesome, whether his backing band happened to be the pixies or not. Not that I'm complaining they currently are.

Only The Strong Survive 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2004 Burn My Eyes - Machine Head Even though this major label debut album made a lot of people label MH as a Pantera knock-off, this band was and still is able to cover totally different song styles within the confines of the metal genre. Heavier songs like "Davidian" and "Blood for Blood" battle with "I'm Your God Now" and "A Nation On Fire." And all eleven tracks here show off the sheer intensity of this band. Released in 1994, this CD came out to little mainstream fanfare at the very beginning of the whole nu-metal movement, and was unfortunately passed up. This is something that fans of aggressive 90's metal should go take a second (or first) look at.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 14, 2004 That's the mother of all "my first metal" albums. After a couple years it becomes totally unlistenable. Machine Head: "Burn" :: Godsmack: "Go away."
Only The Strong Survive 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2004 Machine Head: "Burn" :: Godsmack: "Go away." Yeah, I like the analogy hahaha. Meh, Slipknot was my first metal album so... B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2004 Burn My Eyes - Machine Head Even fewer people I know own ...The More Things Change, which I actually prefer over Burn My Eyes. They've got nothing to offer anymore.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Get away from Roadrunner records as fast as possible. They've got nothing to offer anymore. Come on now, Agent. Roadrunner still has Type O Negative on their roster. And Jerry Cantrell, too. At least I think he's still with them. Other than those two, stay away from Roadrunner. I mean, NICKELBAK is signed to that label, or at least was at one time (I think).
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Jerry still there. Besides, you have Killswitch Engage, Obiturary, Deicide
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Obituary's still ok, but Deicide's croaked. They're both older examples. Type O is the only flagship band left from when the label was good, so they don't really count. What's the last really good band they've signed? Right. Besides, look at the wonders they've done for Cantrell's solo career...oh wait. KSE? They end up being just another of those eastern metalcore bands. It seems they just ride Nickelback's jock these days. That's pretty sad.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2004 They may not have done wonders for Cantrell, but at least they're releasing his music. Anytime you're forced to ride/swing from Chad Kroeger's nuts, you know your label has become a joke.
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2004 Burn My Eyes was one of my first metal albums to, and damn if it still doesn't rock the jock as a mindless 20 minute diversion (picking fave songs of course). This album along with Vulgar Display of Power so they were both kind of a mixed blessing I suppose. Both are great though. -------------------------------------------------------- Acid Bath. Acid Bath. Acid Bath. --------------------------------------------------------- Here's what Roadrunner has shown me in the last few years. Nickelback. Original florida death heavies that are so desperate to get out of their contracts taht they are willing to put out any material or just sit it out. Of course this will leave them drained and uninspired for the next label. Cantrell is still doing solo material? hell, Cantrell was doing solo material at all? One thing I will say about them...if I was in the position of Exec at Roadrunner after toiling for upwards of 20 years or whatever, I'd probably jock Nickelback as far as they'd take me to. Clearly their time as a top metal label for teh masses was waning anyway. as far as I know anyway. I'm pretty sure that we all know I can list at least a dozen albums that I have that most of y'all don't have that would enrich your lives and make you better people. but I don't want to right at this moment. Acid Bath. Acid Bath. Acid Bath.
