Anyone catch AJ Pierzynski last night? In the eighth, with his team up 9-2, and the bases loaded, he stuck his elbow out, and claimed he was hit by a pitch, when he was not. The ump awarded him the base, and pitcher Steve Reed flipped out and was ejected.

First off, Pierzynski is a complete bastard. Next, the league needs to do something about batters getting hit by pitches. If you don't make an effort to get out of the way, you don't get the base. Hitters should not reach base by sticking their elbows out over the plate.

I completely agree. Hitters standing there and allowing themselves to get hit is exactly what attributed to about half of the hit Pirates in their series with the Cubs. Jason Kendall is notorious for not moving and Craig Wilson doesn't mind taking them either. If you get hit, you get hit, but these morons who cover the plate and don't even attempt to get out of the way shouldn't get a free base. What's even more ridiculous is that there are times when the manager of the hit player actually has the nerve to complain.

It says in the rules that if a part of the player's body is not inside the batter's box and gets hit by a pitch its a strike. Thus if Pierzynski did get hit it should have been called a strike.

No ump follows that rule though.

Just ONCE I'd love to see Craig Biggio not be awarded first for leaning into pitches. Just once. Please.

I think a rule banning body armor for hitters would go a long, long way in curbing some of that bullshit. There might actually be some incentive to get out of the way then.

How delightfully evil.

Someone using gross umpire incompetance to their advantage.

I heard the Reds and A's were going to have a series in this portion of I.L. play.

And I just watched Game 4 of the 72 Series on ESPN Classic too.

The Reds getting slammed and the Stros down 4-0 to the M's is dulling the pain somewhat of a tough Cubs loss. Good game, though, as Carpenter was simply amazing. Rusch was solid, with the fourth inning being the difference for him. Aside from that, he was right on, but Carpenter was just that much better.

The decision to send Macias with Ramirez on deck wasn't a smart move considering who was the centerfielder, but whatever. Putting things into perspective, you had the Cards' hottest pitcher against a guy who's not even supposed to be in the Cubs' starting rotation. Not to mention how well the Cards have played in the last two weeks. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, especially Wednesday, with Prior going against Morris.

Oh no don't say anything negative about the Reds!

After tonight the A's are now 41 games over .500 at home (75-34) dating back to last year as compared to 3 games under .500 on the road (53-56). Since 2001 they are 182-89 at home, good for a .672 winning percentage.

Pettitte isn't progressing as quickly as most thought, so it's doubtful he'll make his return on the 13th as they had planned. Good news for NL Central teams who aren't the Astros.

It's also in the rulebook that the batter has to make an attempt to move out of the way in order to get the base, but I've never seen that rule enforced either.

Well if it's out of the strike zone, do you still have to? And I can't imagine people willing to get hit by an 90-mph projectile so they can get to first base.

The A's have the best record in inter-league play. Which is weird because they have had to face some of the tougher matchups through the years.

Go A's......

I am going on Friday to see the A's & Pirates.....it is Spider Man 2 promotional day, Free Spiderman gloves and pullover mask......LOL.

Yes, the rules state you should make an effort to avoid the ball, regardless of location.

There's no way the Colliseum fills up to the point to give them all away. Get me some damnit.

Ah and that stellar Reds defense shows what usually happens when you give a good team more than four outs. Should be a tied game, but instead, it's 5-1 and Bong has 30+ pitches because of the error that should've ended the inning.

On a related note, Alou booted one of the most rudimentary flyballs you'll ever see, but Clement was able to work around it and get Rolen to ground out. Speaking of the Cubs/Cards game, that idiot Cedano got himself tossed after being difficult about getting in the batter's box. And then to touch and spit on the ump; yeah, real smart, moron.

Rob Neyer ranks his Top 10 center fielders of all-time.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor..._rob&id=1818011

1. Willie Mays

2. Ty Cobb

3. Mickey Mantle

4. Tris Speaker

5. Joe DiMaggio

6. Duke Snider

7. Ken Griffey

8. Billy Hamilton

9-11. Puckett/Wynn/Averill

That's a carbon copy of Bill James' list, with Puckett and Hamilton flip-flopped, and Averill moved up three spots from 14.

Another bad loss. That Reitsma trade looks worse with every passing day. If that trade is indicative of O'Briens talent scouting ability I shudder to think about what the reds drafted this year.
