The "rose" is the central dot that can only be found on the dice when they show a five or a three, the "petals" are those dots AROUND this center dot. So four or two per die, if any at all. So if there's no rose then there's not petals around the roses and if there's petals but no rose it's the same.

Interesting. It took me a few rolls, but I figured it out. The name of the game is a pretty obvious clue once you think about it.

I find it pathetic that someone that is a teacher spent over a year trying to figure this out. I wouldn't take anything he ever said to me serious again for these reasons:

1. The Name of the game gives you fairly good clue on what you need to count

2. The fact that he couldn't take the answer that they give him after each roll and figure out just how they might have gotten that proves that he's not very smart at analyzing information

3. He's an idiot for spending a year of his life on something this pathetic and not being smart enough to ask someone so he can move on with his life and do something useful

explain how. if it's a 1, 4, or 6, it's zero in calculating the sum. Using my discovery I got it right multiple times.

You just said count all the non-central dots. But you only do that when there *is* a central dot. Maybe you just forgot to specify that. A roll of 2 is also a zero. 3 and 5 are the only rolls that "count" towards the sum.

The test was driving me crazy for about 5 minutes before I finally figured it out.

I guessed zero the first time because all I saw were a bunch of dice and no roses, and I got it right. I tried it again to see if it was one of "those" tests, and got a different answer, and worked backwards and got it the next few.
