The OAO Hidden Gems Thread

Recommended Posts

I figured it was about time this forum needed a thread where people could come talk about the undergroun/foreign/other films that they see that don't get the mainstream attention of others. Well, here it is. I'll start us off.......

226826_thumb.jpg

Starring: Val Kilmer, Derek Luke, William H. Macy and Ed O'Neill (yes, THAT Ed O'Neill.)

Writen and Directed by David Mamet.

I usually don't like Val Kilmer movies. I enjoy Val Kilmer the actor for the most part but I find that his stuff is hit and miss. When he's given a good character to play (Wonderland) he can do well for himself. When he isn't.........well, just rent At First Sight and you'll see.

Kilmer should be thanking David Mamet for writing such a crisp and quick movie for him to go with. I've been a fan of Mamet since Glengarry Glen Ross and he hasn't missed a beat. I have discovered, however, that he is a huge fan of the word "fuck. I don't know why, he just is.

The plot does a good job of keeping the viewer guessing without bogging things down with confusing details and mindless turns. There are subtle hints all throughout the movie as to what will happen at the end too. Of course, I didn't catch them but if I did I probably wouldn't have had as much fun watching it. The only downside of this film is Macy, who is totally wasted in his role and utters all but 3 sentances in the whole film.

Tiger Mask Anime 1969-1971

I've seen some of this and love it even though I can't understand a word they're saying. As far as I know and I'm pretty sure on this there's no English version anywhere.

Check out Comic Book: The Movie for a look at some of your favourite voice actors (like the voices of the Joker, Pinky, The Brain, Stimpy and Spongebob Squarepants) in a parody of sorts of the comic book industry. It's not the greatest movie ever, but it will satisfy your inner geek.

Hunter's Moon and Hunter's Blood are both pretty good man vs man in the cusp of Nature movies

'the war zone'. tim roth's directorial debut, came out in 1999. story of a teenage boy's reaction to what he suspects is incest between his sister and his father. VERY heavy stuff, very disturbing, very affecting. won lots of accolades, one of the best movies of 1999 (which says a lot), but never got a proper wide release.

Very cool horror movie, very hard to find. About this kid who's afraid of clowns, and he ends up getting dragged to the circus by a friend and his brother...he gets freaked out.

Then later 3 crazies escape from the looney bin, kill 3 clowns, dress up as them, and follow the kid home...I'll leave it at that

I'm currently pimping it right now in my avatar (and member title for those who have seen it would understand), American Splendor.

Great flick based on the true story of the comics and the man's life who inspired them, Harvey Pekar.

Time Bandits:

Terry Gilliam-directed madness about a group of midgets who design trees and things for GOD, then steal his map to time and space, and travel through the ages attempting to be thieves. It includes a couple other Monty Python alumni, and Sean Connery. Awesome friggin' movie that no one's ever seen.

Time Bandits was one of the top 15 grossing movies of 1981 I think, so it's not all that unknown. I saw it a few years ago and didn't like it all that much.

Although I agree that it is hardly unknown (there is a Criterion of it...) I'd say that most people only know it once you start reminding them of the "Time traveling midgets and the kid and Sean Connery and..." at that point lots of folks go "OH YEAH! I liked that movie."

I used to watch it every time I went to my Grandparents house as they had that, Star Wars (A new hope) and The Wizard of Oz all recorded off TV. Seeing as how it was a farmers ranch there was little else to do (what? run and frolic outside? Nevar!) Although eventually a Wherehouse store sprung up near by that had EVERY WWF tape up to Wrestlemania 2 and so I spent my time watching and dubbing those when I could.

Ahem, back to Time Bandits... I watched it recently myself (own it on VHS and DVD) and I got a whole new level of enjoyment out of it that my young self never did. I guess it is a bit too British for it's own (American perspective) good. That ending was always a big stumbling block for me as a kid.

A hidden gem suggestion from me? Hrrm, does "Freaked" count? There is no reason for everyone to NOT know this film as it had Alex Winter and Keanue Reaves in it but I guess it was right after their Bill and Ted success so it probably got burried in a wave of "Bill and Ted suck now because it is two years later" hate.

Randy Quiad rules this movie.

"Twelve milk men on one route? No wonder they fight!"

"Styro-foam cup..."

'In Hell'

I don't know how popular this movie ever was...because I had never heard of it until recently when I saw a preview on USA. So picked up the DVD at Blockbuster for only 5$. (Y) And I have to say it was a damn good movie. And not only that it's a Van Damme film, and I know he has a lot of fans so if you're a fan and haven't seen this it's something good to pick up.

"LT" Lawrence Taylor is in this, and I his role fucking rocked...and was played well.

This is a seriously cool movie. The werewolves effects are well done and the story takes some neat twists and turns. Plus I think it had a dude from Trainspotting in it, which is fucking right by me.

is my recommendation. It's an Austrian movie about a family being tortured by a couple of sadistic young chaps. It carries the gimmick of one of the tormentors giving an occasional aside to the camera, which is supposed to chastise the audience for their consumption of vile material such as this. Whether it works on that level, you can decide for yourself. It has a genuine ability to disturb. It has a TCM like relentlessness, but in a much more subdued manner. Probably best described with this quote I saw on a (negative) review on IMDB:

"The feeling of the picture is that of a hundred-minute-long extended dance remix of the ear-slicing in RESERVOIR DOGS."

By the way, Clownhouse sounds great and I'm totally seeking that out.

JSA Joint Security Area - Incredible Korean drama thats part political thriller, part commentry on the civil conflict between North and South Korea. Leaves you depressed but inspired and glad you went out of your way to watch it. The directer Chan-wook Park went on to win at Cannes this year with his new films Old Boy which is just as good as JSA.

Shakes head at Funny Games.

No offense IDrinkRatsMilk but I had to see that for a film class a few years and ended up walking out in disgust halfway through. I'm sure you know what scene I walked out at.

I was thought it was a terrible and exploitive piece of shit. I also had to watch a ton of Dogme 95 films because our tutor thought they were all works of art. I on the other hand felt like punching him in his face everytime I had to watch one.

Oh, I don't take offense as that's precisely the reason I recommended it. I did say you can leave whether or not the art part works up to you, but since you've brought it up, I'll come out and say I don't particularly think it did. But, as you've seen firsthand, it will get a pretty strong reaction out of you one way or the other. I love that kind of stuff for it's own sake, and I know there's a few others here who at least moderately enjoy it. Anything that will get such a strong reaction is worth seeing in my book, though I'm not trying to trick anybody or anything. I think I adequately described it so that anyone who goes and sees it will know they're in for a pretty sick movie.

In the Company of Men (don't worry, it only sounds like a gay porn flick). Basically, it's two guys that are sent on an extended business trip and decide to be dicks to this one woman that they meet while there: she happens to be a very hot deaf woman. They both decide to pretend to love her and then plan on dumping her in as cruel a way as possible at the end.

The guy that plays the major asshole (Aaron Eckhart) does such a good job that I've heard that people confront him on the streets to give him hell for what he did to this woman.

Under Oath (1996)

6305973164.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Found this at Wal-Mart about 2 years ago when they had a VHS/DVD blowout (even cheaper than usual, as I got this for $4.88 DVD). It's produced by Roger Corman, but don't let that fool you. The story is that two cops, getting tired of the daily grind just to make ends meet, decide to steal some guns from the police property room and make a deal with an arms dealer for a one time score. As it turns out, the arms dealer winds up killed when the deal goes sour, and it turns out he was an undercover ATF agent. Feeling that their days are numbered, the cops luck out when they're the ones assigned to the case, and go to any and every length to cover their tracks. Very entertaining with a good script, but most would assume it's B-rate schlock due to the Corman attatchment.

Best Laid Plans....Reece Witherspoon movie.

Not a classic or anything. But a decient little crime caper/dark comedy. And on DVD it's under $10. A few bucks anyway...worth a viewing.

Yeah man no problems. People I have spoke to who mention it tend to speak of it as one of those 'you won't believe this film I saw last night' type deals whether they like it or not. I guess it does do what it sets out to do shock and appall the audiance.

I just think it goes too far and has nothing redeeming about it whatsever or even any substance to it outside of its shock value.

And I am usally a big fan of extreme cinema [Man Bites Dog, Irreversable, Takeshi Miike films etc].
