Guest Jimbo Report post Posted June 21, 2004 So....did anyone else watch a bit of the US Open the last few days? Mickleeson SHOULD have won the ting. He was up a stroke with 2 holes left, but went ahead and double bogeyed 17 and Reteif Goosen birdied the next on his way to a two shot victory at -4. I cannot stand all the pathetic "Let's go Phil! Yay for Phil! He finally one a major! Woohoo!" crap and was ardently rooting against him today.... I hope the Open comes back to Shinnecock again soon, it was a lot of fun to watch them play. Yeah, I know most people will say golf is ghey and boring, but it really was fun to watch these guys do anything to try and keep their balls from rolling off hte green. I just don't get all giddy about Mickleson and how he "deserves" to win all these majors and such. People say he's the best, maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but all I've seen is that exactly once he's been able to win a major championship, which for all intents and purposes, decides the elite of golf, and he always folds. Y'know why Norman isn't called one of hte best ever? Because he gave up 6 majors on the last day when he had a very good chance to win. Norman was definitely a terrific talent, and so is Phil, but they aren't the best by any means. Speaking of the best, I find it hillarious to say that Tiger Woods is in a "slump". So he hasn't won a major in 2 years, oh geez. Nicklaus didn't win one every year and people don't jump on his back, do they? However, he does need to get some control of himself and his ball. Finally, who thinks Shinnecock was unfair? I for one, don't. The courses job was to give the greatest challenge possible to ALL golfers, and it did that. Was it extremely difficult? Yes, but did it keep any sort of player from competing? No. It's a major, it is supposed to be difficult. It is supposecd to be a great achievement to win one. All that crap about nobody being under par for the second round is silly--the scoring of this tournement was similiar to most and this was just a biproduct of a very tough course. Goosen won because he played the course as it was given to him. He constantly looked extra around the holes to see wher ehe could land the ball and give him the best shot to make his putt. That ladies and gentlemen, was the way to play the course. If you know the greens are extremely fast and unforgiving, don't try and force stuff on them and complain about it afterwards, PLAY THEM AS THEY ARE. He wouldn't have had the opportunity to make all those one-putts had he not put himself in position to make them. He got jobbed so many times it was criminal. He should have at least four majors -- he got jobbed by Tway at the 1986 PGA, and by Mize at the 1987 Masters, who holed lucky shots. Mize's was a mishit that happened to go in the hole. Were you watching the same tournament I was?? This was the second highest-scoring Open in the last sixty years. The course was tough enough the first two days -- it was really tough on Saturday, and downright criminal yesterday. The greens were DEAD. Making them play on a golf course with dead greens is stupid. Mickleson did this as well and should certainly be commended, but he still screwed up, so poo on him. Fuck that shit. Goosen won this tournament. Mickelson certainly didn't give it to him. He putted better than anyone I've ever seen. Yeah, he double bogeyed 17 to lose it, but he still shot a damn good round, and if Goosen hadn't shot an amazing round, he would have won the US Open by three strokes. We live in a country where racecar driving and skateboarding are trying to be passed off as sports. That (and only that) has lessened my stance on Tennis and Golf's sports status. On a someone amusing note, I was listening ESPN Radio a little yesterday, and someone wrote in and asked how racecar driving can be considered a sport. The Host's response? (No sarcasm) "What a nimrod! I'll answer that this way: "Motor Sports" is the fastest growing sport in the country!" How that answered the question, I have no idea.
