Eugene

Recommended Posts

I mean its the same character idea, the slower guy who's not on the same mental level as the rest of us, and Disnmore is able to make it HUGE. So other then maybe being a Hulkamaniac, what did, ah I forget who played him, do wrong with the character?

Looking back in and all, couldn't Evad have become a monster baby face if he decided to say realize Hulk wasn't as nice of a guy as he claimed to be and have Hogan look like the heel.

It's the most well-written storyline/character on RAW which capitalizes on the bizarre nature of wrestling fans. Case in point - Roadkill was over HUGE when ECW came up here. Hurricane -at one point- was pretty big. Funaki had some appeal, once. It's goofy and the fans dig it because it stands out and is fresh(er) than the lame, uninteresting characters out there today. So they take that initial interest and stretch it further with their formulaic plot points. I think the Regal/Eugene relationship is the best one on RAW by-far. I love what they've done with it. The HHH/Eugene match and story -IMO- was great. This character is able to get things out of other wrestlers -emotions and development- that you can't normally get. There is a problem with over-exposure, as when he talks too much and becomes too much of a focal point, the fans lose interest. The key with Eugene is how the other wrestlers react to him. He should be used as a tool, because that's the most you'll be able to get out of him. He can't be champ, he can't headline PPV's, and I don't know if ppl will pay to see him at house shows. But he CAN help wrestlers who'll be that.

Eugene actually reminds me quite a bit of Rick Steiner's late 1980's character in the NWA.

It's pretty much, almost a complete rip off.

eventually...Eugene will realize evolution is against him and against all odds he'll overcome them.

I think next week they should have Benoit apologise to Eugene for hitting him but Eugene says that HE is sorry because Benoit, Regal, etc. got hurt because of him and that if his friends get hurt because of him, then maybe he shouldn't be around anymore.

I must say, I will be mightly insulted if for Eugene's next match, his opponent still comes in all over-confident and cocky, and treats him like a fool.

This storyline has been awesome, really reviving the dead Regal.

I was hoping the "Regal snaps on Eric" bit would be closer to the AWESOME rant on HHH in 01

Regal is the true hero in this story and I hope the WWE sees that (I'm getting mixed signals on that - Kane squashing him on RAW didn't help him out at all). I loved how he admitted he was a bad person and always will be, but he can still see how special Eugene is and how he cares about him. If his wrestling is up-to-par, they could push him pretty far if they treat him right.

Well said.

Regal has looked great since his return and I find myself being more into him then I have been in a long time. The other day I thought that him and Benoit would make a pretty sweet team. Sure, in the Eugene storyline you get his awesome facials, comedy. etc... but it's how he grew to care for Eugene that's the good stuff. He was giving HHH the staredown of fucking death on Raw and showed some great fire in the opening 20 seconds of his "match" against Kane.

I thought it did a good job. Eric was so worried that Regal would help Eugene that he sent a totally unprepared Regal out against a total monster, and Regal held his own in the beginning.

what rant on HHH in 01?

During the Austin/Taker feud in 01, when rumors were flying about Taker's wife being in an accident, and even heel Commish Regal snapped on HHH.

In Regal's office, Triple H tells the commissioner he had nothing to do with the Undertaker thing. Regal won't even look up at him. "Hey!" He shoves him in his chair. "Hey! Dammit, don't you forget who the hell I am. Don't you forget who my wife is, and you damn sure well better not forget who my father-in-law is. Now you listen to me. I want you to take your little eraser, I want you to go into your little book, and I want you to erase this match between myself and the Undertaker tonight." "Actually, no, I don't think I'll be doing that." "You don't think you'll be doing that." "That's not a good idea, that's all." "All right, well at least this - at least, change the match - get rid of the stipulation. Get rid of the No Holds Barred. Make it a straight up match. At least, you can do that. I KNOW that you can do--" Regal slaps the finger out of his face and rises from his chair. "Get your bloody hands off me. You listen to me. People like you DESERVE what you're going to get. You DESERVE a no holds barred match against the Undertaker, and one other thing, I hope he bloody well kicks some sense into you! Now get out, get dressed because you've got a no holds barred match with the Undertaker! Go on, bugger off! OUT!"

Regal preparing to hit on Gail Kim at Backlash was the highlight of the year.

I'm just glad they found something worthwhile for him to do while he got over the injury. Now he's just got to refine his wrestling style a touch more, because pre-injury he wasn't having particularly great matches.

I think the problem with Eugene though is that they're afraid to let his character go all the way. I mean obviously his character is a retarded, naive, emotionally vulnerable guy who wants to be a wrestler and happens to be talented that way. The vulnerability is what drew people to him and what makes his stories so engrossing.

However, when he gets in the ring, instead of just letting him be vulnerable and keep vainly fighting back until he gets saved, they have to go their typical face route. He has to have superpowers and be invulnerable, just like Hogan and Warrior and Austin and Rock. I wish for once they could just run with the character they have and leave the superace bullshit on the shelf.

It's one thing if he's facing Coach or somebody, but when he's facing HHH and Kane, he should not be able to dominate them physically. If he gets a fluke win over them in 6 months, then so be it. But physically dominating the top two heels on Raw within a month of his debut is bullshit.

In my mind, there's a difference between being physically dominated, and being outwrestled,. Eugene isn't strong, but he can wrestle. I saw the story of the match on monday as HHH going in thinking it was going to be easy, but he was getting beat not because Eugene was stronger, but because he was a smart and skilled wrestler.

They also mentioned that HHH was still banged up from HIAC. I actually thought they were doing that so that they could take the sting out of a loss later.

The only problem with Eugene is it will be the only character Nick Dinsmore can portray again. Especially if it has some legs and last six more months.

there's nothing wrong with his wrestling skills by far...he just has a different kind of style that most folks aren't used to thus he comes across as boring...if they'd stop sticking him in useless fueds with stiffs, you'd really get to see how good he actually is...if they gave him and Benoit 15 minutes, sure the charisma would be low, but the actual wrestling would kick ass...

While watching the match with my friends, I actually found myself caring for Eugene the character. Not thinking "HHH isn't putting him over right," or "Dinsmore isn't playing this right." I actually thought "HHH is a bastard for treating a retard like that." That's why Eugene is getting over.

On a side note, I realized the other day that Eugene can actually do what the WWE claimed he was going to do. He can help mentally challenged kids feel good about themselves. I considered my late uncle, who had Down's Syndrome and loved wreslting, and he would love Eugene. I can't believe it, but it's true.

Evad Sullivan was worse in the ring then Sid and was feuded against guys like jungle Jim Steele and Kevin Sullivan.

Eugene may very well be one of the top 5 guys in the ring on RAW right now and he's involved with talented workers, not just in the ring, but in interview segments too.

Plus, we smarks dig gimmicks that are self-referential.

I have to agreee with everything said so far. I see Eugene as a child myself. It's hard to see him as a wrestler on euwal footing with the other guys, and that's where the sympathy comes in. That's why people root for Eugene, he represents innocence. Well, that's my take on it anyways.

And you could even see HHH show some developmet when Eric came out and told HHH he wasn't getting the job done. For a split second, HHH hesitated in finishing his opponent off. You could see it in his eyes, his conscience speaking to him. He eventually went to get a chair to finish the job, but the fact that he hesistated is what I noticed, as HHH is never one to waver on an issue such as beating your opponent while he is down. He was basically fighting himself. His good side was trying to show compassion, whilst his bad side was focused on getting his championship belt back.

Didn't he even spit at Eric or give him the finger?

No, not necessarily. Throw him under a mask, or have him shave, and he'd look completely differant.

No doubt. Hence the match at the Pillman Memorial Show.

Trouble is, his style clashes with the majority of guys. His matches with Edge were all mediocre. His matches with Jericho weren't great either. Same for RVD. Tagging with Storm, most of his matches were the worst his opponents would have all year. I like the guy's wrestling, but it doesn't much click with the 'WWE style'.

Didn't he wrestle as Doink around Vengeance time? Either that or he was a Conquistador.

Yeah masked wrestlers, unless Foley, Demolition Kane or foreign wrestlers are again short lived gimmicks. Even in the case of Foley everyone new who he was underneath. Shaving has a point but I'm not too sure.

I think the Eugene character has the chance to evolve and grow. However, once he hits the nadir of his character development as lovable, naive Eugene, WWE could easily turn him heel. All they have to do to set the stage for a heel turn is to have him start showing unexpected moments of cunning or anger during his matches. Then one night, Eugene finally snaps and reveals that it was all an act.

He could cut a promo about all the years he spent in the "minor leagues," sweating, bleeding and sacrificing, only to be passed over for a shot at the big time over and over again. "Naw, kid, you're too small. Naw, Dinsmore, you don't have 'the look.' Sorry, maybe next year." He was a WRESTLER. Hell, he was MR. Wrestling, but that wasn't good enough for the crowds. They wanted him to shoot fire out his ass or have stupid catchphrases. They wanted some STUPID gimmick, so he gave it to them. Now the jokes on them. Then he could become "Mr. Wrestling" Nick Dinsmore, a top-notch, technically proficient heel wrestler in the vein of Dean Malenko.

I like the Waylon Mercy element of suddenly going crazy. But I think the fans would shit on him being just Nick Dinsmore and not their beloved Eugene. Though I could see him as an Evolution member clean-shaven and shorn, so maybe they should keep him connected to HHH and Flair for a while.
