Bored 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...ov=ap&type=lgns Star center fielder Carlos Beltran was traded from Kansas City to the Houston Astros on Thursday night as part of a three-way deal that also sent reliever Octavio Dotel to Oakland. The Royals wound up with three prospects: highly touted third baseman Mark Teahen and right-hander Mike Wood from Oakland, and catcher Joe Buck from the Astros. ``This is obviously huge for our organization,'' Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. ``Carlos Beltran is one of the most exciting, complete players in our game today.'' ``He's the prototype we've been looking for for a long time. He's going to be a very exciting force for us in the middle of our lineup,'' he said. The A's also got cash from Kansas City, an amount under $1 million. Of course the last line there is why the trade goes through. Teahan and Wood both had no future with the A's so even though it's a steep price for Dotel they had to make this happen. Best part of the deal, for my perspective at least, is it keeps Beltran from being traded to the Red Sox who the A's might meet again in the playoffs. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Of course I'm pissed that Beltran is heading towards the Astros. I'm fairly apathetic towards the rest. With this deal going through and Pettitte returning within the next week, is it safe to say that the Stros recent troubles are soon to be a thing of the past? geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 This might not be a great deal for the Astros. They have a very weak bullpen now, if Lidge gets hurt they are in deep shit. They took a major gamble, they cannot sustain any injuries in their relief corps now. When I first heard about this deal about a week ago I was not sure how I felt about it. The astros could very well blow some late leads. Also, I doubt the stros plan on resigning him, therefore they lose Dotel for the longterm, they had better win this division now and go far in the playoffs or I feel they will blow up the team and start over. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 I agree that the Stros are running a gamble, as they've traded away their former closer and the guy who was supposed to take over that role. Things weren't working out exactly as they'd planned, so I guess they figure there's no harm in letting Lidge go for the role. However, their pen is already weak with Dotel being one of the few guys who was usually reliable. Here's to hoping they've made a mistake in trading away Dotel and Beltran isn't the solution to their offense woes. As an aside, I think Dotel will look pretty damn goofy in those white shoes the A's wear; moreso than most of their players.
Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Beltran's already said that he's not resigning with Houston unless they get rid of Tal's Hill
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Beltran's already said that he's not resigning with Houston unless they get rid of Tal's Hill I heard that the chances of him resigning with any team he was traded to were slim to start with.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Beltran's already said that he's not resigning with Houston unless they get rid of Tal's Hill I thought that was Biggio. Anyway... crap crap crap crap crap crap crap. This better blow up in Houston's faces bad. We could've used him in center field....Patterson isn't doin it for me
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 They just moved Biggio to center, and now they're moving him out again...but where's he going this time? It's all good, the Yankees are probably just going to get him in the offseason anyway.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 25, 2004 I'd rather the Red Sox sign him in the off-season and try to move Damon anyways. At least their focuses now can go to upgrading the rotation.
Astro101 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Yea, GO ASTROS! Anyway, Biggio is moving to left. Left field is small so he can handle it.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2004 Wow. I've considered the Astros the favorites since December. Obviously, this trade benefits their team. A center fielder is more valuable than a relief pitcher. And the defense will show immediate dividends in the Astros pitching statistics. The A's benefit as well, as neither Teahan or Wood really fit into their future. From a first glance, it looks like a good trade all around.
Detox 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 I just saw my home team rangers and kenny rogers pitch a complete game win against the astros so.....beltran who!!!!
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Good trade. Know just drop the axe on Williams.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 26, 2004 For some strange reason, should the Astros continue on this slide they traded for Beltran early enough where they can just go ahead and trade him at the deadline. Another good part of the deal that wasn't discussed.
geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 They are already 6 full games out, it will be hard for them to come back if they fall more than 9 games back. They need to win now, or hope the wild card comes out of the central. I realize the wildcard as of now would come from the central, but if the teams continue to play well, especially teams everyone thought would suck like Cincy and the Brewers, you will have to face a much harder schedule than the east or west teams. Bored 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Funny just got around to taking a look at this week's Sports Illustarted and it has an article about Beltran with not a single mention of the Astros being in the running for him.
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Good trade. Know just drop the axe on Williams. I read (on Rotoworld) that Williams was going to bat Beltran in the middle of the order and keep Adam "I'm lucky to have a .300 OBP" Everett in the two-spot. Beltran could be the best #2 hitter in baseball if he hits in that spot, but Williams would rather keep a fellow who sac bunts well, but can't buy his way onto first base, there. Pathetic. Tom, the word is that Jimy doesn't want to move Everett down in the order because of the giant vortex of suck it would create with Everett/Ausmus/Pitcher as the bottom third of your lineup. Not saying I agree with that logic (I happen to think Beltran should hit second as well), but that's what the Astros are supposedly thinking on that decision. They are already 6 full games out, it will be hard for them to come back if they fall more than 9 games back. They need to win now, or hope the wild card comes out of the central. I realize the wildcard as of now would come from the central, but if the teams continue to play well, especially teams everyone thought would suck like Cincy and the Brewers, you will have to face a much harder schedule than the east or west teams. Further complicating that is the fact that they only have 9 more games against the Cubs and 6 left with the Cardinals, thus minimizing their chances to gain ground by winning head-to-head matchups. The Astros' problem might end up not being the number of games they are back, but rather the number of teams they have to leapfrog.

If the Cubs get another four straight wins against Houston like we did in that great sweep a week or two ago, I think we can close the door on the Astros winning the division. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2004 Personally, I think we're a long ways away from counting the Astros out of the race.
geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2004 I don't know Al, with a 4 game sweep the Astros could be 10 games back, that is pretty tough to make up.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2004 But the odds of that are pretty slim.
