Horsemen vs. Saturn/Raven vs. Mysterio/Kidman

Recommended Posts

Guest Real F'n Show

I was just watching some old tapes of WCW from this time, and realized that these 6 guys were the ONLY thing worth watching WCW for back then, with the exception of maybe Blitzkrieg. But the matches these 6 had were off the charts, and I was immediately reminded of the Smackdown 6. I was watching Rey/Kidman vs. Horsemen from the Nitro were Rey and Kidman win the belts, and the match is awesome. **** easily.

Then there's of course Spring Stampede 99's tag match which is easily ****1/2, but the 3 team tag title match from Slamboree is also awesome, and very underrated, since the rest of the PPV sucked. I'd give it ****1/4, and it's almost as good as the Spring Stampede match, if not for the shitty finish.

Are there any other good matches that any combination of these 6 were involved in, that I may have forgotten? I really don't want to dig through my unlabeled Nitros and Thunders if there's not anything worth it.

Not the only thing.

The Cruiserweight Division had just reached the end of a GREAT run (soon to be ruined by Rey's title reign while a member of Master P's gang and fighting heavyweights, and Lenny Lane getting the title).

But still, you had Psychosis, Rey, Juvy, Kidman, Blitzkrieg all busting ass on random Nitros and PPVs.

In fact, Spring Stampede 99 was a great PPV, not just because of the awesome Horsemen vs Raven+Saturn match. Blitzkreig vs Juvi was great, Hak vs Bigelow was a decent hardcore match, Steiner/Booker and Goldberg/Nash were both entertaining and, most importantly, Scotty Riggs finally got a gimmick, in which he was GOLD! It's only in the summer that WCW turned UTTERLY dreadful, coincidentally at the time of Sid's return.

Yes, I know. There were also some great cruiserweight matches including Rey vs. Kidman from the 3/15/99 Nitro and Rey vs. Blitzkrieg vs. Psicosis vs. Juvy from the 4/19/99 Nitro as well. What I'm saying though is that the tag team division and cruiserwieghts were the only thing worth watching WCW for in the spring of 1999 (with the exception of the entire Spring Stampede PPV minus Konnan vs. Disco).

If anybody can upload the opening match from Souled Out '98 with the crowd popping like NUTS for La Parka, I will e-kiss their feet.

La parka suffered really badly from the breakup of the LWO, His only memorable Nitro appearance before the Russo era was in that Mexican Hardcore match which had the worst announcing i've ever seen.

Silver King and El Dandy were still around at that point, so you're wrong.

Hey, who are you to doubt El Dandy? That guy's a serious professional.

I can't remember any cruiserweight or lucha match in WCW having any serious announcing.

Tenay did his best, but Schiavone was just horrible.

I downloaded this match on Kazaa a few months ago, I think only a few people have it but if you get lucky it's not that big of a file and is a very entertaining match. I've always liked the 3-Way Tag Team match, that spot with Dean Malenko lifting Rey Mysterio Jr. up in the air, Mysterio landing perfectly on the top rope, and coming off with a moonsault is poetry in motion.

. Here it is:

Some of the stuff I liked in this era:

Benoit/Malenko vs Raven/Saturn Spring Stampede

Benoit/Malenko vs Raven/Saturn Nitro

Benoit/Malenko vs Raven at Spring Break

Benoit/Malenko vs Rey/Kidman WCWSN April 17

No commercial break in this one. This one was really going strong so the interference ending was indeed unfortunate.

Benoit/Flair vs DDP/Bam Bam Bigelow Nitro June 7

This was after the Benoit vs Flair match on WCW Thunder. Flair talks a reluctant Benoit into teaming with him to take out DDP and Bigelow. This a notewothy match especially for an emotional moment at the end which I won't ruin if someone hasn't seen it. They really milk the hot tag in this one.

June 10 Saturn vs DDP - Thunder which turns into a tag title bout with Benoit/Saturn vs DDP/Raven

Intense and heated while it lasts this is all sorts of fun and marks Benoit and Saturn winning the titles. The aforementioned Nitro match where they "won" the titles didn't count but this one did

Benoit/Saturn vs DDP/Kanyon PPV June 13 Great American Bash

I'll take this over the Spring Stampede match any day of the week. A little dissapointing heat wise but the match is very good. Kanyon as he often did when wrestling Benoit takes a dragon suplex.

Chris Benoit/Dean Malenko/Perry Saturn/Buff Bagwell vs Ric Flair/Roddy Piper/Diamond Dallas Page/Kanyon Nitro June 14

Benoit/Saturn/Malenko vs Bigelow/Kanyon/DDP July 5 Nitro

Benoit vs Kanyon Thunder July 8 -- This was better than their 98 match and a real nice one at that.

Benoit/Saturn vs DDP/Kanyon/Bigelow July 11

2 vs 3. Likewise, I'd take this over Spring Stampede too. They do a really good job of getting the point across that 2 vs 3 is a signifigant disadvantage here. I loved DDP here as he was just having so much fun in this match

Benoit/Malenko vs Whindam/Henning WCWSN March 20

wildpegasus, what are your thoughts on the Slamboree three-way tag title match?

It was a fun match and I enjoyed it because there was always action going around. We had 6 different wrestlers bringing their moveset and we had Benoit doing the dragon suplex and the trademark flying clothesline over the top rope which I marked out for. But they had an impossable mission in keeping this match with all the teams coherent and that's why I don't like it as much as a lot of ther other matches. They even had that extra rule in the match where more people were allowed in the ring even adding more confusion. Than you have 6 different minds so it's hard for everyone to stay on the same page. Still, you could tell they were trying to keep things going on a nice track but it was just one almost impossable task. You have a better chance of climbing Mt. Everst in a day.

Actually, I just rewatched that match and it had a better cohesive flow than I remembered.

Glad to hear that, as an old friend found that show AND Spring Stampede and is sending me both next week. I've heard lots of praise for the Stampede match over the last year, but just found out about the 3-way when he told me about it. These two matches and Juvy v Blitzkrieg should make it a great birthday present.

Very strange that this thread popped up within days after finding out I'd be getting them for free.

Very strange INDEED.

You also get WCW's best hardcore match ever, besides the lucha tag hardcore match from Nitro, Hak vs. Bigelow on Spring Stampede.

Who doesn't love El Dandy?

Remember the short time when Stacy Keibler (Miss Hancock) managed El Dandy and Silver King in a tag team?

i concur. with Schiavone, everything was "NWO, Hogan, NWO, Bischoff, NWO, Goldberg is GOD, NWO,", ok, Tony we GET IT!!!! of course, to be fair, that's probably what the Bischoff told him to talk about all the time.

I remember Silver King saying "would you like me to excite your groin" to Stacy on a thunder.

yeah you gotta admit that in ECW/WCW anything Raven touched, turned to gold, so he gets to the WWE, and Vince doesn't wanna hear any of Raven's ideas, and basically jobs him out.....

Billy Kidman vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. from the 3/15/99 Monday Nitro, Blitzkrieg vs. Juventud Guerrera vs. Psychosis vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. from the 4/19/99 Monday Nitro, and Chris Benoit vs. Dean Malenko from the 9/13/99 Monday Nitro. Can anyone remind me how Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn became a team just a few months after Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko were battling Perry Saturn and Raven.

Benoit and an injured? Malenko turned against Flair and the Horesman on Nitro tagteaming with Roddy Piper

Flair wrestled Benoit on an episode of Thunder

Flair sweetalks a hesitant Benoit into tag teaming with him against Bigelow and Page. Benoit out of respect does so only for Flair to betray him when Benoit crawls over to tag Flair in the ring after Benoit had gotten beaten down for a long time in the match. An injured Arn Anderson in an extreamly emotional moment gets up on the ring so Benoit can tag him in Saturn senses an opportunity to come down and takes an advantage of it. After that Saturn and Benoit are a team. On an interview on Thunder Saturn mentions that Benoit and Saturn don't have to like each other. They just have to like winning so in storyline they're not buddies from the very start. After awhile of course they become more friendly and the Revolution is formed.

Malenko's a wildcard in the beginning. We don't know what he's up to or what he thinks of the Benoit/Saturn tagteam. After awhile of course we find out that he approves and all 3 of them eventually team up along with Shane Douglas.

Alright, I was able to watch the triple threat from Slamboree and

Benoit-Malenko v Raven -saturn today. Really enjoyed both matches. I watched the 3-way first, then Juvi-Blitz from Stampede, then the much lauded tag team classic from spring stampede. I thought the 3 way was just a blast to watch, lots of fun. Maybe a bit heavy on the brawling, but damn was it not entertaining, with literally non-stop action. LOVED the spot where Benoit is just destroying Saturn, while Malenko keeps everyone else out of the ring. Lots of good stuff in this match, maybe not a technical masterpiece, but a very fun match.

Was more than a bit let down with Juvy-Blitakrieg, I don't know, it just did not do much for me. Really dramatic and awesome finish, and some cool flying in and out of the ring, but, not much else. It just didn't seem to be much of a match, not much substance to back up the high flying. Maybe I need to give it abother try.

Now, the tag match at spring stampede kinda caught me off guard. On my first viewing, I think I was SO INTO the awesomeness that is Benoit+Malenko, that I totally missed most of the great heelish tag team stuff they were busting out. I was just marking for how great they were as a team, that i wasn't able to latch onto the story of the match. I had a great time with it anyway, but didn't quite feel as much love for it as many others seem to. On the second viewing however, I was able to understand it more, and wound up liking it A LOT more the second time around. Great, great stuff, really glad I've got that match in collection. Great story, great work, great crowd, super hot finish = tag team classic.

Glad you thought the 3-way was awesome, I think it's almost as good as the Stampede tag.

I just realized how many of the free TV matches I don't have from this series. I need to find a comp tape of the Horsemen/Raven and Saturn/Filthy Animals feud...
