Youth N Asia Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 Soooo many movie coming out have the original cut, and now the "unrated" cut. What's that even mean anyway? I think people seem to get unrated confused with stronger than an R, or NC17ish. American Pie...the Unrated version is no different than the R rated. The only thing I spotted different was his pie humping, that was it. And I also saw Spawn years ago (awful), and then a couple years ago watched the R rated cut...no difference, maybe a few more "shit"s, but that was it. What's with the studios releasing UNRATED cuts and R rated cuts of PG13 movies that are really not different enough to change the rating? Is it just that THAT particular version of the film wasn't submitted to the ratings board, and is thus unrated?

Guest Nelly's Bandaid Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 I'm pretty sure it means it's free of those certain guide lines like 'you can show him thrust 3 times but not 4 and side nip is ok but not more than 96% of a breast can be shown at any given time' and as a result certain scenes are longer or different. That's really just an assumption based of the American Pie and Wild Things unrated versions, but it seems plausable.
Ravenbomb Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 in some movies (Ichi the Killer and Versus for example), the rated version cuts away from the gore and sometimes looks like it's on USA or Fox, but the unrated version (obviously) doesn't.
1234-5678 Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 The unrated version of "True Romance" had a hell of a lot more violence, especially in the Arquette/Gandolfini scene.
Guest Vitamin X Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 I think this also GREATLY applies for Spun. The rated version of that movie is shite.
eiker_ir Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 For me Unrated only means something in horror movies, more gore/violence shown. In all the other genres it's just extended versions, nothing really OMG UNRAAAAAAAATED most of the time.
Ravenbomb Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 the Clerks X unrated version could be interesting though. (And even if the movie isn't any better, new commentary )
Black Lushus Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 Robocop had a bit more gore, teh scene where ED-209 malfunctions and kills that company guy and the scene where Murphy is blown apart...
Lord of The Curry Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 I watched the unratred version of Eurotrip and all I got was a buncha cock shots that didn't make the theatrical cut. That movie is the worst tease for Michelle Trachtenburg showing (but not) showing the goods.
NoCalMike Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 A very good example of how the MPAA likes to butcher films would be in the case of LEON (or for it's american release, The Professional). The MPAA made the editors, cut approx 17-25 minutes of footage from the film, a lot either had to do with Matilda going on hit missions with Leon, or scenes of sexual tension, considering Natalie Portman was 12 or younger at the time. The International Uncut DVD which was released a few years ago, is much the superior film to the American R-rated film, and little of it has to do with gore, or nudity or "thrusts" It just adds more dynamics to the film that the american version either watered way down or left out completely. I highly recommend this film to everyone, and to see for yourself, watch both versions and you will see the difference. Now, other times "Uncut" could mean something as simple as not showing gore, not showing the more explicit sexual scenes. However a lot of companies make you think you are actually getting something better when in reality, the "CUT" footage was a mere 3 seconds or less. It is wise to look up on the internet at various sites, what exactly that differences are in each individual movie, then make the decision for yourself.
starvenger Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 The unrated version of "True Romance" had a hell of a lot more violence, especially in the Arquette/Gandolfini scene. Wasn't that a double dip?
NoCalMike Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 The unrated version of "True Romance" had a hell of a lot more violence, especially in the Arquette/Gandolfini scene. Wasn't that a double dip? well there was the original unrated release, that was basically just the vhs tape put onto dvd format, and then recently they released a 2-disc collector's edition. That actually features the option to view some additional scenes, including a nude Patricia Arquette
NoCalMike Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 Oh something I forgot to mention before. Unrated films aren't ALWAYS BETTER then the R-rated versions. Sometimes the additional scenes literally suck, and you totally understand why there were cut.
Youth N Asia Posted July 7, 2004 Author Report Posted July 7, 2004 Don't get me wrong, I know there are movies that it matters...Dead Alive for one. But it seems to be a more recient thing now, any R rated comedy seems to have an uncut version.
Ravenbomb Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 yeah, a lot of times the unrated version isn't as good as the regular type
Toshiaki Koala Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 The MPAA FORCED Léon to be cut by the distributors? I always assumed it was done because they assumed audiences wouldn't appreciate the quieter scenes. It's kind of sick that wouldn't give the movie an R because of these scenes, considering that they DON'T EVEN HAVE SEX. The violence wasn't that extreme, but I would consider it more offensive than two people talking. Another example of an "unrated" version that is better than the theatrical cut is "Badder Santa," the uncut version of Bad Santa. I don't know whether the cuts were made for ratings reasons, but there's an AWESOME scene near the beginning, about seven minutes long, where Billy Bob steals a car, drives to the guy's house, and hangs around there (drinking, using the toilet, etc.). It may not sound that great, but trust me, it's hilarious, probably the funniest scene in the film.
Guest Staravenger Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I'm glad I rented that version (Badder Santa), because that scene was funny as hell. Kinda reminds me of 1 Hour Photo when Robin Williams "breaks" into the house, messes around, and uses the toilet. I used "breaks" because it was probably a fantasy.
Ravenbomb Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I think they pretty much showed that it was a fantasy. I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm pretty sure they established that it was fantasy
HarleyQuinn Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 Also extends to animated films ala Return of the Joker(Featured a few second extended scenes or showed more violence). I should try and track down that International Uncut of Leon sometime since I love the American "bastardized" version.
spman Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 The "Unrated" DVDs that have become popular as of late with the mindless Teenage Comedy Movies is jsut a gimmick to sell more discs. It implies that they'll show really raunchy stuf like frontal nudity from whatever attractive lead actress stars in the movie, but more often then not it's just a few additional scenes of unescessry nudity from extras.
Positively Kanyon Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I think Terminator 2 also benefitted from an 'unrated' cut of some sort when comparing either the 'Ultimate' or 'Extreme' edition to the theatrical cut. Only differences were, other than added scenes, was the characters dropping F-bombs left right and centre throughout the movie. For those who don't know what an F-bomb is, it's FUCK!
griffinmills Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 Oh something I forgot to mention before. Unrated films aren't ALWAYS BETTER then the R-rated versions. Sometimes the additional scenes literally suck, and you totally understand why there were cut. Whole heartedly agree. The deleted Ghostbuster scenes are doing just fine on the editing room floor for instance. Another good example for unrated versions is the edited Bad Lieutenant which basically worthless vs. the proper cut. The point about teen sex comedies is a good one though. Oh and here is another vote for Bad Santa, amazing sleeper!
Guest Staravenger Posted July 8, 2004 Report Posted July 8, 2004 I think they pretty much showed that it was a fantasy. I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm pretty sure they established that it was fantasy I'm 99% sure it WAS fantasy, but I just got lost once or twice because of the characters unbalanced mental state. What was the deal with his dream of bleeding out of the eyes?
