Good to see both my home state pro teams ranked in the top 4 of their respective sports. I'm surprised the Falcons, what with Vick's hype, aren't ranked a bit higher, as well as the media-darling Cowboys. Discuss.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 The Pack, Ravens, Broncos, and Rams have no business being ahead of the Panthers. -Pack - aging QB, suspect D, RB who fumbles a lot, average WR's. Severely overrated here. -Ravens - no QB -Broncos - lost Portis, OK D, Plummer isn't a big time NFL QB (or at least big enough to get to a SB) -Rams - Faulk's status?, very inconsistent QB, average D I'd even bump the Cheifs down (great O, but D is nothing special). Pats & Eagles are the clearcut faves (and I hate them both), but after that it's a toss up.
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I'd say the Lions are the best money bet. Not that they have the best chance to win it all, but it is a possibility and with those odds, worth the wager.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 The Texans at 70-1 is worth putting $20 down now. The Texans always seems to beat the teams they are not suppose to in Week 1, have an improving O-Line and 2 potential Pro Bowl players in Andre Johnson and Dominiac Davis. But its going to be hell trying to get the Wild Card spot in the AFC.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 -Broncos - Plummer isn't a big time NFL QB (or at least big enough to get to a SB) No shit... Just like Jake Delhomme...who the hell is that guy? Or Bart Starr, drafted in like the 75th round...pretty obvious how he never ammounted to anything....
razazteca 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 Who the hell was Kurt Warner when he won the Superbowl? Too bad the Broncos WRs are either aging too fast or are too young.......ditto on the RBs.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 Jake Plummer has proven he isn't a big time NFL QB though (unless he is playing the Eagles). He isn't in the same boat as the Bradys, Warners, or Delhommes who come out of nowhere. With them you don't know what you have until they play, Plummer has played and has shown he isn't good. KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 Is this for this coming season's Superbowl, or next season? This year's is 39, not 40, in case that's what the ? is for.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I agree with pinjockey ... you can't compare Plummer to the others ... he was a high draft pick that was supposed to be a difference-maker and a franchise QB. And thus far, he hasn't been anywhere close to reaching that potential. To compare him to undrafted, or lowly drafted, QB's only further proves the point: he's not a money QB. Guest Arnold_OldSchool Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I'm a Packer fan, but i wouldn't dare call them the 4th best team in the League. The 2ndary is in shambles with 2 new starters (Thomas or Carrol at CB, Roman at SS) The Line backers are the same bunch as last year (Nick Barnett will probably have sophmore slump) Aaron "Hardworkin' Journeyman" Kampman is starting at DE, KGB and Grady Jackson will have to have career years to take up the slack for Kenny Peterson, James Lee and Cletius Hunt. OL is aging as Rivera and Flanigan are both 30 + , The Wideouts after the Big Three are no bodies, and the big 3 can't string together more than one or 2 decent games in a row. Farve and Ahman are going to have to carry the load again, Bubba's on a contract year, and there's no body behind him, so I'm not sure if he'll explode or implode yet. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I don't think it is saying the Packers are the 4th best team in the league though. You have to look at what there chances are to do something this season. Odds =/= power rankings. Looking at Spiff's example of the Panthers earlier, how they shouldn't be below the Packers. Would you rather bet on the Panthers who have a still dangerous Bucs team, a team in the Saints who can play like the best team in the league on any given Sunday, and the Vick led Falcons or the Packers who have the overrated Vikings, and two punching bags in Chicago and Detroit (detroit is improving but they are still a punching bag)? If the Panthers were to play the Packers straight up on a neutral site, I would probably take Carolina. But the fact is the Packers look like they should waltz to the division title and a home playoff game, while Carolina looks to have a tough division schedule ahead. Same thing with the Ravens. The division they are in should lead to them getting to the playoffs easier than Carolina. And I am going to lay more money down on the team more likely to be in the playoffs than I am the better team.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 20, 2004 Cowboys 22-1 I'll take that bet. I don't see anything big from the Skins or the Giants this year, they've got a good solid team with a great coach.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I'd put money on Carolina before I would on either Balt. or GB. Those teams may have an easier time making the playoffs, but I know they're not good enough to make the SB. Carolina is coming off a SB year, and assuming it wasn't a fluke, I'd feel better throwing down $$$ on them rather than 2 weak teams making the playoffs from bad divisions. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I'll assume that its for this year's Super Bowl. If I had any money to waste, I might take up an 18-1 odds on the Ravens. I think their defense is going to be better this year than it has in the last 2 and their offense should certainly be better.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 When I worked at Ford, there was this guy who would place about a $200 bet every year on the team with the worst odds to win the superbowl, well the year the Rams won it, it was them, or at least they were Waaaaaay down on the list, and he made a killing. It was $2000 for the playoffs and $5000, for the superbowl win......so yeah he was a good mood superbowl sunday.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 these things don't always go by the best team perse, a lot of it has to do with key players. Like, Bret Favre is a QB you would want in the playoffs, over some other playoff team QBs, so Green Bay gets an automatic boost just from having Favre. Gert T 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I am surprised the Jets are ahead of a team like the Bengals. Especially when you consider quality of play for the AFC East v. AFC North. I am surprised the lowest odds are at 7-1, but I guess that has to be done to get people to bet this early.
alfdogg 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 It is for the upcoming SB. I thought we just had 39, but I guess it was 38.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I am surprised the lowest odds are at 7-1, but I guess that has to be done to get people to bet this early. I've seen the Pats favored as much as 9-5 on some odds sheets. I'd also take a chance with Carolina. They really didn't lose anyone major in the offseason, and the teams in their division didn't improve all that much from what I can see.
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Seahawks should be a bit higher, like 15-1 odds Not really, still question marks at DT (youth, which is why trading up for Wilfork or Harris woulda been nice) and LB (aging Brown, Simmons coming off a down year, and Huff isn't the answer) though why were tied with the Vikings is kinda baffling. Moss ain't THAT good. That said I do expect them to win the NFC West.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted July 23, 2004 I would bet nice money on the Panthers and Seahawks because of crappy odds and Lions and Texans for long shots. Biggest Busts of thsi year (in general, not compared to thses odds) Titans Eagles Cheifs
