Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted July 23, 2004 Early early pre-season predictions for this? Some (SI) are picking the Jags to be the underdogs from the AFC. Will the Eagles finally release their choke collars? Will the Pats fucking DOMINATE again? Will the Bucs and Raidahs redeam themselves after abysmal post Super Bowl seasons? Thoughts? Fuck if I know what the proper identification for it is. you could have just put Super Bowl 40, less typing... EDIT: oh yeah my predictions...New England and Green Bay rematch...if not GB then the Eagles, I think they may just finally get over that hump...but there hasn't been any real DRASTIC changes to the Pats lineup so a repeat really seems possible for them...and I hate it being a Bills fan and all... nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2004 This is the year someone figures out the Patriots. My wild guess: Colts beat The Rams. AoO, you're not saying that the COLTS will beat the Pats, are you?!? If you're saying that another team will beat NE, and then the Colts will beat that team, maybe. But not the Colts over the Patriots. Plus, even if Indy gets there, Manning wouldn't be able to lead them to a SB win. It's a big game, and we all know how well he does in those. My prediction: New England over Philly. Yes, I'm biased because I'm from Boston, but a team that was decimated with injuries yet still ran off the second longest winning streak in league history actually got stronger in the offseason. Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2004 I'm confused. Do you mean 40 or 39 (the next one), because if it is the latter the title is still wrong? Super Bowl XXXIX: Seattle over Denver. The Seahawks were on the verge last season, but some shoddy play from their WRs and a poor road record really let them down...and they still almost beat the Packers at Lambeau. In Seattle, they win that game and I have no doubt that they would have beaten the overrated Eagles or Rams. I don't think they would have beaten the Panthers, but they can expect a fallback this year, leaving Seattle as the team to beat in the NFC. Denver is greatly improved over a year ago with the Champ/Portis deal. Portis is great, but then Denver always has great RBs no matter who it is. Champ is more valuable to them. New England is a great team and if anybody of this era can repeat as champs, it is them, but I'm worried that they get lethargic in much the same way that the Bucs did last year. PLAYOFFS: Wildcard Weekend Green Bay d. Washington Atlanta d. St. Louis New England d. Tennessee Baltimore d. Cincinnatti Divisional Playoffs Seattle d. Green Bay Atlanta d. Philadelphia Denver d. New England Indianapolis d. Baltimore Championships Seattle d. Atlanta Denver d. Indianapolis Superbowl XXXIX: Seattle d. Denver I will go out on a bit of limb for Super Bowl XL since it is so far away in the day of free agency and say that Detroit knocks down the Jaguars. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 23, 2004 AoO, you're not saying that the COLTS will beat the Pats, are you?!? I don't think the Pats will be nearly as dangerous this season. The team is basically the same, but I think Corey Dillon is going to move the offense away from the short passing game that brought them to the dance in the first place. Basically, they'll try to fix something that isn't broke. Not to mention the fact that the team is due for an injury. A bad knee to their offensive line will really jeopardize their chances at a repeat. Have we really had to see Tom Brady sweat in the pocket yet? No. His protection has been incredible. I don't think a particular team will "beat" them per se, just that they'll go to the well once too often, and the strategy will backfire. The Colts aren't a bad bet, really. The defense has been bolstered in the offseason, and Manning is always a quick scoring threat. Get New England down by a couple of touchdowns, then see how they fare. I still contend that the offense is vulnerable. They win based on defense and special teams.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2004 AoO, I agree that it's inevitable that the amazing Patriots run will end at some point (be it this year or a year-or-so away). But to say that they're do for an injury is ludicrous; they were decimated with injuries last year, particularly at LB & WR. They lost Colvin for the season and Johnson for half of it, they played games where their starting WRs were 3 & 4 on the original depth chart, Law played weeks on a bad ankle, etc. If you mean an injury to a player like Brady, then yes. But no other player on the team could go down and really cause that much 'damage' to the success of the team. And I stand by my "Peyton Manning loses big games" statement. Look at Tennessee (the Vols, not the Titans): after having the media fellate Manning for his whole college career, he's replaced by Tee Martin and then they immediately defeat Florida and then win a national championship. Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2004 In the case of Tennessee winning the national title after Manning left, it was a matter of all the pieces coming together and upperclassmen hitting their strides just after he left. Had Manning been a year younger than he was, he would have won a National Championship that season as well. The 1998 Tennessee team wouldn't have been stopped even if Fulmer had gone out there and played QB.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 23, 2004 AoO, you're not saying that the COLTS will beat the Pats, are you?!? I don't think the Pats will be nearly as dangerous this season. The team is basically the same, but I think Corey Dillon is going to move the offense away from the short passing game that brought them to the dance in the first place. Basically, they'll try to fix something that isn't broke. Something was broken though. They had to rely to a short passing game to eat up clock because the running game was THAT bad. It almost cost them a few games, including that one at Indiana. Not to mention the fact that the team is due for an injury. The team had several injuries last season. Ted Washington was out 6 weeks, Roosevelt Colvin missed the season after the Philli game, Ty Law missed a couple weeks with an ankle injury, Troy Brown missed about a month with a leg injury, David Patten missed most of the season after needing knee surgery, etc. A bad knee to their offensive line will really jeopardize their chances at a repeat. Have we really had to see Tom Brady sweat in the pocket yet? No. His protection has been incredible. They had a couple injuries last season on the O-Line. Damien Woody went down and they thought the team was screwed in the Super Bowl. Brady wasn't touched at all. I think the O-Line coach deserves alot of credit because he gets those guys believing in one another. Brady can scramble a bit though, he's no Pocket QB like Peyton or Bledsoe. I don't think a particular team will "beat" them per se, just that they'll go to the well once too often, and the strategy will backfire. That's the thing though. They rarely repeat plays more than 2 or 3 times. In Bill We Trust The Colts aren't a bad bet, really. The defense has been bolstered in the offseason, and Manning is always a quick scoring threat. Get New England down by a couple of touchdowns, then see how they fare. I still contend that the offense is vulnerable. They win based on defense and special teams. Belichik has Manning's number and I don't see the Colts beating them in a game that counts. The Patriots offense was vulnerable before, but with Dillon...I don't see any weaknesses to be honest. Maybe at FB, but as long as he can block I don't care.

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2004 The NFC is tough to pick. The Eagles are the frontrunners, but after that it is one huge gray area. No one expects the Panthers to be AS GOOD this year, even though it woudn't be unheard of, but other then those two, I see at least 5-8 teams no better then one another afterwards. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted July 24, 2004 The 2003 Panthers are a lot like the 1998 Falcons. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2004 Panthers end up a lot like the 1999 Falcons. And the Eagles' window of opportunity I feel really closed on them last year. They'll still make the playoffs but they won't go far.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2004 Even though they are my favorite NFL team, hell will freeze over before I pick the Pats to win the Super Bowl. When I do, they collapse so no thank you. I'd rather look stupid for not picking them than to look stupid FOR picking them. The Eagles will not even make it to the Super Bowl since frankly, I still don't think McNabb is really that good of a QB. Plus that city is NOT big enough for McNabb and Owens. The minute he hears "Donovan McNabb and the Eagles" on ESPN, Owens will kick a hole in his big screen and start running his mouth. Not to mention I'm not 100% sure he'll be alive after the game against the Ravens. That'll be the only time in history I will cheer for Ray Lewis and the Ravens. Out of the AFC since I'm not touching the Pats, I'll go with KC. That defense has GOT to be better than last year. On the NFC side, I'll take a surprise and say the Lions. Yes, I realize I just said my Super Bowl pick is the Kansas City Chiefs against the Lions. I shall stand by the complete stupidity of said statement. The winner? I will say the Lions shock the world, winning the Super Bowl 28-24.
