While it is shocking, it doesn't seem that unprecented. The following running backs retired at age 30 or earlier and were quite accomplished before they retired. Some were more accomplished then others. Quite a few surprises in here too.

Alan Ameche - 27

Jamal Anderson - 29(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000)

Greg Bell - 28(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1984, 1988 and 1989)

Gary Brown - 30(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1993 and 1998)

Clarence Davis - 29

Terrell Davis - 29

Earl Campbell - 30

Willie Ellison - 29(Ran for 1,000 yards in 1971)

Chuck Foreman - 30(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1975, 1976 and 1977)

Barry Foster - 26(Ran for 1,690 yards in 1992)

Mike Garrett - 29(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1967 and 1972)

Rodney Hampton - 28(Ran for 1,000+ yards 5 straight seasons)

Gale Sayers - 28(Ran for 1,000+ yards in 1966 and 1969)

Barry Sanders - 30

Robert Smith - 28

Jamal and Terrell had no choice. Anderson wasn't given another chance by any team and injuries were just mounting up on Davis. Jamal wanted back and couldn't make a team.

That reminds me, I wonder if Jamal could make a run at the Dolphins now that they are in a bind? They gave Robert Edwards a second chance when they needed a back so I don't see why they won't now give Jamal a chance if he wants it. Or hell, Robert Edwards again.

The Dolphins will have to make a trade with the Raiders to get a running back who can at least get 500 yards now. Unless they somehow find some sleeper from NFL Europe or the Arena league.

There are tons of teams that revolve their systems around their back (Priest Holmes?) so I doubt that's the one... he's has taken tons of punishment (because of the type of back he is), but there still is something out of sync here.

Yeah but the Chiefs have a good QB so if Priest were to get injured he'd still be able to handle it. Miami......has nothing. Guess if you're going to revolve around the RB you'd better have a QB that can back it up.

Jamal Lewis?

The Ravens? Yeah they're QB hasn't really proven anything yet. But I hear he's better than we think.

How long has Jammal played? These teams that revolve around the running back also seem to burn them out quicker.

From what ESPN is saying the Dolphins are targeting Stacey Mack and James Stewart now.

Mack backed up Fred Taylor when he was injured a couple years ago and did a good job at it. James Stewart was cut by Detroit after missing last season with a shoulder injury and basically beinf replaced by Kevin Jones.

Ken Simonton(sp?) Oregon State's running back from a few years ago is tearing it up in NFL Europe, or at least he was... I'd like to see him make a roster.

He's still on the Bills roster...

Also...he hasn't shown anything against NFL defenses in the last 2 preaseasons.

Don't forget Bo Jackson, and The Nigerian Nightmare (his actual name escapes me, any Chiefs fans remember who I'm talking about?). Both retired due to injuries as well.

How old was Barry Word when he quit? He was, I believe, the HB to Okoye's FB. But honestly, I don't think many of those guys retired so much as no one wanted them anymore...kind of like James Stewart.

You know, the one team that could make a good deal for Miami would be Buffalo. They're obviously grooming Willis McGahee to be The Man, so I'd bet Travis Henry isn't against being traded. However, Buffalo would be dumb to help out an AFC East team.

And, that's exactly why they won't be trading Henry anytime soon.

I'd love the Bills to trade McGahee... simply because they can only keep one back, and I'd never give away Travis... and now is the best time to get any trade value for one of them.

Also... Minor wouldn't be the full-time starter.

They picked up Sammy Morris from the Bills... and while he's not the most talented guy, he's definitely a fine player to have. Good blocker, good 3rd down receiver, he's 225 lbs. and gives some inside running presence.

I think Morris is just as good as Stewart, or whatever other scrubs are out there.

I think miami will trade with the Bears for Anthony Thomas

other trade possibilities

with Chiefs for Larry Johnson, a longshot trade with Colts for Edgerrin (hes from florida is in he last year of his contract, and the colts offense is not driven around him he is off the field lots and replaced by mungro, rhodes, and ricky williams..i know its way out there but the colts know they cant keep him and marvin..dolphins would screw up somehow so colts shouldnt worry about helping them too much haha), a trade with Tampa Bay for the trouble Pittman (hey having him for half a season or something is better than minor for a full year), with Houston for Tony Hollings

if the bills were in a different division id bet that they would be calling miami to trade Travis Henry provided willis is OK

overall id say Thomas is a strong favorite to be traded to Miami, the bears were rumored to be shopping him before and now there is a need for him

Well this is good new for the Jets but I feel bad for all the Fins fans. 10 says before camp starts and right after the 2 big FA names sign..the worst possible timing. But if Ricky wants to leave, he should, if you don't feel the passion anymore, you shouldn't play...like Isiah Thomas and Barry Sanders

Also now the NFL must be kicking themselves for scheduling a Fins-JETS MNF game.

There was rumors in the DC area of a deal where the Redskins send either Trung Canidate or Ledell Betts and a first or second (preferably second) round pick to Miami for Ogunleye since the Skins need help on their D-line and Miami isn't too keen on paying Ogunleye since they just gave Jason Taylor the world. Don't know what to make of this.
