Alien vs. Predator

Recommended Posts

The reason these Predators wouldn't act like the normal ones we have seen is because basically these are the "teenager" ones. They have yet to prove themselves and they are down on Earth in the hive to do so.

They are going to be brass, cocky, basically out of control with their only goal to prove themselves in battle: human or no humans.

Precisely--so why play it up as if they may ultimately want to conquer us?

Because simply put, we ARE next in line.

Think about it, the Aliens are the ultimate test because of their numbers. If they eliminate all the Aliens, then what species would be the next logical test for them? A well armed, intelligient human race that works very much like the Aliens.

Not to mention, Earth has been the proving grounds already apparently according to the story and the only thing keeping humans from being the hunted IS the Aliens on the planet. So either, humans become hosts to the Aliens or humans become the next thing to be used as a test for the young predators.

So pretty much, whoever wins then we lose.

The Predators would just take longer to kill us all while the Aliens wouldn't take as much time.

Maybe I missed something in the comics, but when has a large population of Predators come en masse to a planet for conquest?

Plus, aside from a few extremely strong humans, there's very few opponents for the Predators to prove themselves against. Compared to a Predator in fighting skills and strength, your average human is a total puss. The most Predators would really want to do is come here, snag a few trophies, and leave. The exception might be in the case of, oh, if their planet was in grave danger and they'd have to relocate their operations.

A well armed, intelligient human race that works very much like the Aliens.

What precedence is there for a large number of Predators to take on, oh, even a 3rd world country's relatively-small standing army, let alone slaughter lots of innocents and want to take over the planet. Those who have read the comics, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that, but from what I gather the Predators mostly go solo or in small groups.

Besides, why would the Predators completely wipe out humans when they'd make such excellent prey for other Predators, future generations, etc. They'd want to keep us around. Probably the reason they came to earth for this mission was to be able to take on some of the aliens as well as some humans, rather than having to trek across several galaxies to try to take on both.

As for the person who said these are "teenager" Predators, I'd like to note that at least one of them is designated as an "Elder" Predator, who is possibly the leader.

Pitches for scripts that have been passed around for 10 years, like FvsJ and this movie, must suck.

I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but you can add Catwoman to the the list as well.

Just curious, but does AvP qualify as a comic book movie? IIRC, the first time these two met was because Dark Horse Comics owned the comics license for both.

Anyways, I won free passes for a screening on Thursday, so I guess I'll be going.

It is somehow tough for me to get pumped up over something based on a Dark Horse comic. I never cared for anything Dark Horse.

Am I the only one who really doesn't get the appeal of this whole thing? I mean, on paper it looks like a complete mismatch. Predators are ultimate bad asses with all sorts of artillery, capable of wiping out entire mercenary units (and lose to someone like Arnold). The Aliens job out to Sigourney Weaver on a regular basis.

I think I'd put my money on Predator.

The Mask was pretty good, and their Star Wars stuff isn't bad either.

I'd think that it'd be a numbers thing. Then, of course, the Aliens attack black ninja style or something...

I can't believe I'm doing this, but here we go:

Predator's pros:

*Individually smart

*Technologically advanced

*Strong, Fast

*Can become invisible

*Great tactical hunters

*Can take a lot of pain

Predator's cons:

*Will only fight prey that are a possible threat

*Not group tacticians

*Cocky, over-reliance on technology (example: once the Predator's weapons are gone and his self-destruct device disabled, the pred in P2 runs back to the ship in a damn big hurry)

Alien pros:

*Great pack hunters

*Acid for blood

*Huge numbers

*Various stages of development that can kill

*Can reproduce very fast.

Alien Cons:

*Individually dumb

*Limited technology, if any

So there you hae it. Basicly, in the end it doesn't matter, since it's the writers who decide who's stronger. Personally, I'm going to see the movie no matter if there is a chance it'll suck. I mean, come on, it's Aliens vs, Predator. I remember arguing as kids over who would win. I'm willing to check my adult cynical nature at the door.

Oh, and Bishop isn't THAT Bishop. He's the

great-great grandfather of evil Bishop from Alien 3 and the founder of the Corporation ;)

Here's the thing to ponder: How will this do at the box office? Let's face it, the Alien series hasn't been much in years...wasn't the last one in about 1997? And frankly there hasn't been a GOOD Aliens movie since before Predator was even made.

Predator isn't really a series, just a couple of movies. And the 2nd one didn't really make much money (though I kinda like it).

While there was an audience clamoring for Freddy Vs. Jason, I don't get the sense that many people really give a shit who wins between Alien and Predator.

you'd be surprised between the number of fanboys and casual movie goers...this won't set any records, but it'll make a modest amount the first week to not be considered a bomb finacially...

Especially considering they are packaging a free ticket to see AvP in the new Predator dvd release. I bought the movie just for that reason, I mean $15 for a dvd and a free movie (gotta love Walmart)

I'd go see more movies if dvd's came with free passes

I saw a commercial for that. ARGH--I already got the original release of Predator on DVD.

What are the extras on this one?

Oh, a CINO pass came packaged with the Batman/Super Friends box sets, but that didn't really help the movie all that much. :P

EDIT: SpiderFan already listed the extras.

If you plan on picking it up, be sure to check the back of the packaging. The DVD is available in both widescreen and fullscreen, but you can't tell just by looking at the cover.

As far as I can tell, it only says which version it is one place in a rather small spot on the back. I had to dig through a pile at Walmart to find widescreen.

Wouldn't the Predator have the ultimate trump card with the nuclear explosion?

Yeah, but noone wants to see this go to a no contest.

In the trailer, there is what looks like the type of explosion that happens with a Predator self destructs.

Are the deleted scenes on the DVD any good?

You can direct questions regarding the Aliens, Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator comics towards myself. It always seems that every forum I go to has me as the BIG fan of the comics (considering they were the only comics I'd read for at least 5 years).

Predators only work in groups when necessary. Usually, this will only be when they need to capture a queen to use as a breeder (and they will then plant the eggs on a planet with wildlife and possible human colonization), or when an elder is training younger ones in how the hunt works. One human has been accepted into the tribe, her name always escaping my mind (she was the main character of the original AVP series, mentioned heavily in the two-part AVP: Duel, and a main character of AVP: War*), and this is because she helped a team hunt down Aliens on her colony when the hunt became too much for the Predators to handle.

If a human appears to be an equal of a Predator, the Predator will not kill them, but will rather give them a trophy and their alliance. Think when Apollo Creed became friends with Rocky Balboa due to Rocky finally defeating him.

Aliens are much easier. They kill everything in sight, can breathe any air, can survive for long periods of time in outer space, have no remorse, no pity, can be bred in any living organism, and create their own surroundings to blend into. Although they are scared of flames, they are seemingly impervious to small arms fire (pistols) unless an entire clip is emptied into a soft spot on their head (as seen in Aliens when Vasquez empties the entire clip of her Beretta into one Alien in the airvents, spilling the acid onto her foot and trapping her inside before Lt. Gorman comes to her aid). Shotguns do little damage, but larger rounds (particularly explosive rounds, as found in the standard USCMC weaponry) are a great weakness.

Oh, and the only reason the Aliens lose time and time again to Ripley? Because Ripley is smart, bitch. She knows how to handle herself, and got PISSED THE FUCK OFF when she found out her daughter had died while she was in Cryo after destroying the Nostromo in the first film, not to mention all of her friends and crewmembers being killed by ONE of them, and was the cause for the deaths of Newt and Hicks.

* = Along with the three survivors of the Berserker team in Aliens: Berserker.

I saw a version at my Wal-Mart--but it was 19.99. Blah. Since I already have the first DVD release of Predator, despite all the extras, I'll pass for now. I've splurged too much thanks to EBGames' Buy 2 get 1 free sale, and I already have a free movie pass for *any* movie I want to see.

Too bad though, because those are some wicked extras.

Sucks about the widescreen/regular versions, although I don't like double-sided discs myself.

Thanks for the info. Going by your rundown, it doesn't appear as if PWCA's Predators follow the comic conventions at all. :P Big shock there.

It was only $14.99 at FYE. If you factor in the AVP MovieCash, it's a pretty good deal.

It's not a double-sided disc. It's a two-disc set that's available in either widescreen or fullscreen. The cover art is identical for both versions, which can cause some confusion.

Yeah I know, just saying it's preferable to do a one-sided disc over a two-sided disc, because 2-siders get scratched really easily. :P

Thanks. I'll try FYE for it.

Wait a minute...FYE has something cheap? Is this with a mail in rebate or something because all the FYE's here are dollars more expensive on most dvd's.

Was she also the one in the AvP: Deadliest of the Species mini that Claremont wrote? Just curious.

I got back from the free screening here in Houston. It's a decent movie. It's not a great movie, but it's a good popcorn muncher that you'll enjoy.

The backstory is actually pretty decent as it more or less follows the comics plot you outlines but at least a third (maybe 2/5) of the movie is the setup. If you're expecting a start-to-finish slugfest, you'll be disappointed. Actually, if you're expecting a huge slugfest at all, you'll be disappointed.

Anyway, if you even knew a little about Aliens and Predators you could probably predict what was gonna happen, so I couldn't really hold that against them, and I don't really consider that a spoiler. Call it around 6.5/10, for which I'd ordinarily say it's a rental, but an Alien movie is one that you really need to see in a theatre, so I say go out and watch it on the big screen.

I hate when people use phrases like "popcorn muncher" and "leave your brain at the door." Just the sort uninformative, fence-straddling, unopinionated review that annoys me the most. :P

Well, I guess that means Ebert will give it ***.

(No offense, I just would like a more thorough and critical review. :P)

I'd do one, except it pretty much goes like this:

Humans find something curious, and go investigate.

It's a temple with an Alien Queen in suspended animation

Queen wakes up, and lays eggs. Humans find eggs. Guess what happens?

Predators come to hunt Aliens. Fighting ensues. Aliens, Preds and Humans die.

One being survives. It's obvious who, about 5 minutes in.

I mean, what do I criticize? Anderson giving the fans what they wanted?

(edit)The shoulda said *trying* to give fans what they wanted. Hey, I was tired...
