Worst contract ever?

Did baseball spoil it for the other major leagues with the practice of giving high contracts to average players.

Quite the opposite actually. The other leagues spoiled it for baseball by demonstrating what athletes were actually worth on the free market. While baseball had the reserve clause, football had competition with the NFL and AFL, and basketball had the NBA and ABA. The other leagues were forced to compete for players, thus driving salaries. This led the players to realize they were getting screwed.

And I think the unseen effect of Moneyball and the Oakland A's is that there are a LOT less dumb contracts being thrown about recently.

So if you don't know about a guy who got a massive contract, dosn't that help my point?

Shawn Bradley's 11 year, $76 mil rookie contract holds a special place in my nightmares.

And to think Bradley on had 1 year of college experience at the time!

But he had missionary experience!

I'm saying that Holik and Jagr's contracts are worse, and you're saying this Reeves guy.

It's called a difference of opinion.

I am not arguing your opinion.

I am questioning ur dissmissal of my pick by "I dont know hwo he is".

No, I don't. He's a product of a system in New Jersey that always employs one good two-way center. Holik was it. When Slats WAY overpaid to take Holik away from the Devils, John Madden stepped in and took Holik's spot. He plays better D, kills penalties better, and surprising enough...the Devils are just as successful!

Holik is a product of a system, and the fact that he makes 9 million dollars a year, and actual GOOD players like Glen Murray, who's actually WORTH that amount of money, don't make anywhere near that neighborhood.

Your explanations expalins why he dosn't deserve 9 Mill.

You admitted he is a two-way center that fitted into a system. I am not claiming Holik is a 50 goal scorer. But I would argue that he is very prodcutive player if sloted into a 3rd line center role on a team who needs a two way Center. I am not saying he is great, but good.

Which is why this isn't the 'good players' thread, but the 'Worst Contracts Ever?' thread.

The mere fact that Holik makes that amount of money is exactly why they're at the point they're at in the CBA meetings.

The Detroit Tigers gave Damion Easley something like $12 million a year for 4 years, they released him last year, but are still paying him a ton. They also gave a similar deal to Bobby Higginson.

Right, but my arguement is that while Holik has a stupid contract, he is still good. My example has never been good in the NBA, and still got a similar stupid contract.

But that's the thing:

This is the WORST CONTRACTS thread.

While Holik is a good player, giving him NINE million a year is a horrible idea and a bad contract.

That's why it's one of the worst contracts

I'm surprised some people actually mentioned the Sonics' stupidity when it comes to not only signing players, but choosing the right ones.

People No One Wanted:

Calvin Booth

Jim McIllvaine

Vin Baker

The 3 Million Russian Guys They've Drafted Recently

Moochie Norris

Olden Polynice (x2)

Billy Owens

Sarunas Marcioulonis (sp?)

Steve Scheffler

People The Sonics Got Rid Of For No Reason:

Don MacLean

Eric Snow

Ruben Patterson (probably for the money he wanted, though)

Aaron Williams

Doug Christie

Sam Perkins (bias, my favorite player of all-time)

Scottie Pippen

Dale Ellis (x2)

Ervin Johnson

Dana Barros

Jelani McCoy

Shammond Williams

Desmond Mason (although his trade brought in Ray Allen)

Olumide Oyedeji (I liked him at least)

Ruben Patterson left as a free agent because, had he continued living in Washington state, he would have had to register as a sex offender.

I got a couple here:

1)Jose Contreras (Yankees)

2)Allen Houston (NY Knicks)

3)Shawn Bradley (NJ Nets)

4)Mo Vaughn (Anaheim Angels)

5)Mike Hampton (Colorado Rockies)

the Top guy on my list though:

GRANT HILL (Detroit and Orlando would be better off with a bag of basketballs)

Jason Giambi

The Yankees signed him to a 7-year deal at age 31. His first season was MVP caliber, in 2002, yes. Last year he hit about .250, and this year now that he's off the juice his entire health is blown out of whack and he's got this tumor thing going on. He was hitting .221. Plus, he's had knee and back problems basically since they signed him. He DHed probably more than he played first last year, and I know he DHed every game in the playoffs. He's a defensive liability, an injury risk, and now a health risk. A $120 million dollar one at that. And we're stuck with him till he's 38 years old.
