Lawrence Phillips pawns Big 8 Championship ring

Trouble-prone football star Lawrence Phillips apparently hit rock bottom in Las Vegas.

Phillips, an NFL bust after helping Nebraska to consecutive national titles in the mid-1990s, walked into a downtown Las Vegas pawnshop not long ago and sold one of his Big Eight championship rings for $20.

"He said he was stuck in Las Vegas," said Steve Gibson, owner of Steve's Buy & Sell, 625 Las Vegas Blvd. South. "He said, `I need to get out of town.' "

Gibson, who turned around and sold the ring on eBay for $1,700, said he tried to talk Phillips out of selling it. "I thought about giving him $20, but he would have just walked down the street and sold it."

Phillips, the sixth player taken in the 1996 draft, by the St. Louis Rams, ran afoul of the law throughout his pro career.

Phillips told Gibson he tried to hawk the ring "at every pawnshop from Tropicana to downtown," but nobody was interested because it was not gold.

"His name was on the side of the ring, but I didn't believe it was him until I saw his driver's license," Gibson said.

This sounds very pathtic

Ouch. Even worse is the amount of money the clerk got for selling it on ebay. I guess Phillips was really desperate.

Karma's a bitch...

Phillips was a low-class punk at Nebraska and a low-class punk in the NFL, so it doesn't surprise me to see him fall this far. I'm not feeling any sympathy for him, either, considering all the chances he's been given.

I think he managed to blackball himself from the CFL as well...

"This is your last chance, and I don't mean like one of those Steve Howe last chances!"

I don't feel bad for him. I just wish I had been the pawn shop owner. I'd have kept the ring, wore it in Nebraska and see if I could get any country hotties.

Then I would have sold it.

 That's just great. I know I've heard that from somewhere. Speaking of Steve Howe, when WAS his last chance?

Also, he had like...12 or 13 before the Yankees gave up on him.

Yep.

You know you've hit rock bottom, when you go as far as pawning off a championship ring like that, for such a small amount.

The store owner made out like a bandit in that deal.

Yeah. When you manage to get yourself turfed from the 2003 Calgary Stampeders, a team that will stand as one of the most inept on the field and off in the history of the CFL, you know you've had it.

If I recall Cliff Hawkins (UK basketball player) tried to auction off his SEC title ring on ebay earlier this year. You might think that Phillips would have demanded more for the ring.

Ha.

Ahahahahahahahaha.

Yeah, that's why you only gave him TWENTY DOLLARS for it instead of, say, at least several hundred.

Yeah, you're a real humanitarian. At least be honest about it you lying shit...

Didn't he bail from the Montreal Alouettes as well?

Like Teke said, karma's a bitch.

Yeah, but Calgary... they had the GM's son play QB in front of Crandell, right?

Yeah, just wanted a confirmation if he bombed TWICE, instead of once, in the CFL.

And don't get me started on the nepotism thing. Here in Ottawa, the head coach's son is on the practice roster at QB. Speaking of which, don't get me started on last night's God-awful game, either.

I was at that game last night. Pissed me off to see such a big crowd and to see the Gades play so damn horribly.

Last year, GM Fred Fateri signed owner Mike Feterik's son Kevin. He wasn't all that bad, but the Stamps refused to play for him; the O-line would visibly let the opposing D-line get to him. Still, he was a lot better than Marcus Crandell.

That was my first thought when I read this...

And then I thought, Lawrence Phillips? Fuck Lawrence Phillips. He deserves it.

Wasn't it Phillips who missed the block that led to Steve Young's final concussion, prompting his retirement?

What did he do in St Louis that made a name for him as a total dick?

and speaking of former NFL fuckups, who was that guy that played for Minnesota and then miami... he was cut after trying to off himself...?
