Guest Staravenger Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 I guess it all worked out for the better then. Sure, for a few years the team really wasn't too good (or in 1998 case, sucked), but the management was able to turn some prospects into big players with time invested into them. Of course, the owner is still looking to cut off high priced players. They lost Pudge after last years World Series, and now it seems like Armando Benitez (who I think has 41 saves this year) is probably gone after this season too.
Bored Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Tony Saunders was a rookie and actually didn't make a start in the postseason. Probably wouldn't been on the postseason roster if Alex Fernandez wasn't injured. He was taken in the expansion draft by the Devil Rays and after a decent '98 he was terrible in '99 and was never heard from again.
Brett Favre Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 If I followed the Knicks, I wouldn't be satisfied with a Finals loss. I'd be happy that they weren't the dregs of the league, but I wouldn't be throwing a party. In the end, it was just a longer choke than expected. Some fans are satisfied when their team isn't dead last (Tampa Bay). Some are happy if they're a little bit better than last year (Detroit). Some are happy if they at least have meaningful games in August (Texas). And then there are fans that are happy with their team making the playoffs or world series or what ever even when they don't win (Atlanta) And then there's me. I feel that if you are playing a game to win something, anything short of winning that means you have failed. It wasn't that I was happy, I mean, when they lost I teared, wouldn't say cried, but you know, a tear here and there. But like Staravenger said, they came out against all odds and achieved something that hadn't been done.
Guest Anglesault Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 I don't even remember Tony Saunders, or who he was. I was hoping it wasn't just me. By the way, fun fact: Felix Heredia was on that 97 Marlins team.

Yeah, well Benitez is almost assuredly gone, but he honestly priced himself out of South Florida. He is arguably the best closer in MLB this year. But, the Marlins are doing their best to keep payroll at a manageable level. I believe they are going to go after Carl Pavano very aggressively to keep him in South Florida (especially if he is Cy Young). Mike Lowell is eligbile for free agency now that the stadium won't be in place by November 1, but he has a player option and is likely to take it to stay with the team at least one more year. The stadium is only $30 million away from reality, which is likely to come by Jan 1, which means the Marlins will have a new stadium by 2007, and will actually be able to turn a profit when they escape Wayne Huizenga's stranglehold on Pro Player stadium. I am hopeful for the team's future.

Guest Anglesault Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Ditto, and Heredia being on winning teams should be a crime. To be fair to the guy, while he was never anything special, this year has just been an absolute nightmare. He isn't this bad a pitcher and I hope he works himself out.
King Kamala Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Kind off the current topic, but say Garry Sheffield makes the Hall of Fame, what team does he go in under? I'd say Marlins, cause he won his championship there and spent the most seasons there.

I'd say Marlins, cause he won his championship there and spent the most seasons there. It depends on what he does here. If he can get a couple more rings in NY and be a consistant top 5 MVP vote getter over the next three years (maybe more) He could be a Yankee.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Either the Florida Marlins or Los Angeles Dodgers, probably the former if we are going by how long he was where. Does he get to choose what team he goes in as?
Mik Posted September 12, 2004 Author Report Posted September 12, 2004 I would be very happy to see Gary Sheffield become the first plaque in the Hall of Fame to sport a Marlins logo. As I briefly mentioned earlier, he was always my favorite player when I was in my early teens and younger and that would make me very happy.

It still surprises me that he's still around. Steinbrenner kicked Contreras BUTT to the Chicago White Sox for not being able to pitch under pressure, but Heredia sticks around despite not pitching good period.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 I don't even remember Tony Saunders, or who he was. And he was a postseason starter. Very strange. Tony Saunders was the #1 pick in the Expansion draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. At the time, he looked like a decent prospect, probably comparable to a young Matt Clement, or maybe Victor Zambrano. Lots of strikeouts, but he struggled with control. To say Saunders disappeared or faded away is an understatement. Saunders suffered one of the most horrific injuries in the history of baseball. On May 26, 1999, Saunders broke his humerus bone in the act of throwing a pitch. For those of you who remember Dravecky's injury, it is the same thing. Saunders did attempted a comeback, but suffered the same injury and was forced into retirement. Here is an article from the St. Petersburg Times shorty after the second injury.... http://www.sptimes.com/News/082700/Sports/...d_knowing.shtml
Guest Anglesault Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Fucking Manny hit another one out? God fucking damnit. In other news, I heard Bronson Arroyo gayed up his hair. It's a wek rumor, but apparently he now looks like Justin Timberlake. Can a Red Sox fan confirm or deny?
Guest Staravenger Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 If the Mariners are batting now, I'll check the television. (Thank you Extra innings PPV) Edit: Yes, his hair looks fucking gay braided up.
Guest Anglesault Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 (edited) Edit: Yes, his hair looks fucking gay braided up. I must find a way to see this. Is this Red Sox team policy? I'm half convinced they are competing for worst hairdo. Jesus Damon, Manny's Sidsehow Bob, Pedro's Gheri Curl on crack, Trot's...whatever, Bellhorn's pube-do, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone. Edit: Ah yes, Millah's Marilyn period. Edited September 12, 2004 by Anglesault
Guest Staravenger Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 He looks like a white-reject from a D-12 cover group.

I hope he stays in New York to rack up some more awards and such: I'd rather see another Yankee in Cooperstown than a MARLIN. EDIT: If being a Yankee in the Hall means they have to win the World Series, never mind. He'll just have to be a Marlin or Dodger then
Bruiser Chong Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Alou with another dandy of a defensive play results in a 1-0 Marlin lead.
The Czech Republic Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 A run scored off an Alou error? Get outta town! (That's not to you Bruiser...that's to Alou) Steve Stone must have something to do with this...grr...
the max Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Conine killed the Cubs rally with two good defensive plays in the bottom of the second, and the Marlins have tacked on 4 here.
The Czech Republic Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 I think we can go ahead and release Mercker this winter...
Bruiser Chong Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 You know what the funniest part of all this is? The guys who've been in the midst of this BS feud with the commentators have been among the poorest performers for the Cubs in recent months.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Keep beating the Cubbies, Marlins. I I'm hoping the Phillies are gonna steal your playoff spot when we meet 7 times (ridiculous!) at the end of the year.
Guest Staravenger Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 The Yankees have been playing especially shitty today, leaving like 8 or 9 runners on base, including twice leaving the bases loaded, and commiting two stupid errors (A-Rod and Cairo respectively) Glad to see the Marlins winning. I hate cry baby teams, and the Cubs are on the top of the list right now.
mike546 Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 A-Rod is like a completley different player in the 2nd hole. And Sheff, well, he just hits the ball really really hard.
Mik Posted September 12, 2004 Author Report Posted September 12, 2004 I'm hoping the Phillies are gonna steal your playoff spot when we meet 7 times (ridiculous!) at the end of the year. You're joking right? You're talking about the Phillies...playing the Marlins.
